a video which popped up at another forum i frequent had me fire up google and look for more info/pics. Never heard of this before! Apparantly it's a 90mile roadrace, on State Road 318 in the US. Record sits at 200+ mph AVERAGE with some bendy bits in the track as well. Youtube is full of epic vids! Something to add on the list 'things to see before i die'

IIRC Bryn or somebody similar was a co pilot for this at some point. I've been trying to convince my mate to ship his Corvette over for it for years. It's fast enough to compete but not sure if it would last the distance at full chat.

Joe Ellis (BTB Exhausts) who I know thro the ABS club did it twice in his home built Lotus Carlton Who needs a ring sticker when you can display this Joe's brief summary of the event To get the 163 average meant maxing it on all the straights, for which we had a bit of help from a headwind. In our class our max allowed speed was 180 (due to tyres etc) so I held it at an indicated 180 through the speed trap, which was recorded by radar at 177 I think. Once past there the speedo went beyond 180 on a few occasions (when I was brave enough to look). Aero wise it was very stable except for one side wide which blew me about 6ft off line, and on a couple of bumpy sections we got air, which was interesting. To get the high speeds you need to be in 5th, and then the engine is revving way beyond its torque peak, so you hit a wall aero wise. To go faster we'd need to retune the engine to make power higher in the rev range and possibly alter the gearing a bit. To qualify for the unlimited class you need to have completed a run at over 165mph average, but they told me I'd got close enough, which was our target. It really focused my mind when my co-driver called a right after flat crest, which turned out to be left...I stopped listening after that one. We worked out that we'd need different gearing in 5th and 6th and about 650bhp to crack 200+. One of the technical issues that we had to solve was the diff overheating. When we asked Lotus they knew about the problem but that with the V-max mpg of 6 the fuel usually ran out before the diff overheated. So because we had a 120litre tank we had to fit a diff cooler as well...On our first attempt the diff temp gauge was off the clock by 40 miles in, because we hadn't put enough oil in. Second time it worked perfectly, with a bit more oil and some clever ducting to the boot mounted cooler. One funny incident came after the race, when a fellow racer with a V8 twin turbo Esprit which he had boasted was the "Fastest Lotus in the World", admitted that he'd have to revise his claims as he'd only managed to average 150! One day I'll go back, maybe with the Lotus or perhaps something else.

^^^^ That is the absolute nuts. What a sticker!!! Yeah kinda entitled to wear it too (unlike some ring stickered cars) He shipped the car from the UK to the states and left it there so he could do the event twice before shipping it home again Lets just say it was on his bucket list ;D

Awesome - so what do you need the car to have/ be able to do - to enter. I'm not sure - he built the car to NASCAR spec roll cage and safety wise as he couldn't find any rules on what spec the cars had to be prepared to (but he could find the technical specs for a Nascar saloon) He did it to prove you didn't need a big block V8 to run in the higher classes as well as tick something of his bucket list Huge variety of cars entered apparently and I'm pretty sure they have a street/stock class Hertz rentals in Las Vegas have some "interesting" cars tick all the boxes on the insurance boxes and go for a "Drive" Return car with empty tank and slick tyres I think the entrance fee is quite high mind ;D

Matt's right, I did this in 2007 as a navigator. I met a Ford dealer from Pennsylvannia in 2006 at Bonneville and he mailed me that winter to ask if I was up for it. He built a big block, supercharged, NASCAR spec '06 Mustang for the job and we competed in the 170mph class. It was one of the most ridiculously, amazing things I've done with four wheels. I wrote about it at the time and I haven't got enough time now to write it again, but I'll come back to this thread and tell more... Here's a link to the Mustang we did it in. www.musclemustangfastfords.com/features/mmfp_0710_2006_ford_mustang/viewall.htmlAll I'll say right now is that we almost came off the road at 186mph ;D

How brilliant and very insane! I have huge admiration for people competing in this kind of event. Must have nerves of steel!

I'm sure I've seen some footage of this event, can't remember if it was on TV (probably Men & Motors) or VHS.
Must be brave, mad or stupid to take part, not sure which though.

In the first edition of Top Gear magazine (i'm pretty sure it's that one) they had an report/article on this, some truely amazing stories and cars. I think it was Andy Wilman (producer of Top Gear now) who was co-piloting in a Viper. Some one had a massive crash and almost died so they didn't push it too much. The overall winner was a guy in a Buick Grand National, Stan Davies or similar that hit over 200mph

Crikey, I'd love to do that - but only as the driver! I reckon it'd take 100x more bottle to do it from the passenger seat. Bryn, I salute you.
