They said the same about CD vs. Mp3...... and i still don't own an mp3 player or ipod thingy, i do however own cd players but it was a reluctant move from tapes Ross, I totally agree. The problem with any internet magazine is that the information is already available for free on forums such as this. So unfortunately unless you can provide it completely free of charge, people will go elsewhere. Just look at the amount of illegally downloaded MP3s compared to legal downloads. The beauty of a published paper magazine is that it offers some escapism from everyday life. I know I get fed up with looking at a computer screen sometimes and enjoy being able to pick up a magazine to get away from it all. I just hope somebody does buy the magazine.

I still like Mags and as i said I'd be prepared to pay £4+ to read a good mag at the sofa etc, and pick it up again when i need it.
Bring back Street Machine with a few more pages.
I would also subscribe to an online only service just like i do with my phone and credit card if thats the place to get it, but given the choice i want it in paper.
Just like If I-tunes are charging quid a song etc, i want to buy a CD of my fave bands i respect on CD ideally for a tenner or less. Just like I have no prob seeing quality films at the cinema for £5, or paying my TV licence to occasionally see quality BBC stuff and ods and sodz elsewher on the box. we're all guilty of the move to the Computer, its avilable its, its immediate and its often *free
For newcomers such as 'Retro-Driver' and Reanimation-Films, the internet is a good opportunity for a footing, but copying always worries me.

I've just read this about Retro Cars.... and i have to say my first thought was 'oh well'. Had i read this a year ago i'd have been angry, sad, whatever. But the magazine has gone so far downhil, and i've since bought a couple of copies of PPC and seen how much better that is.... unfortunately it seems their readership voted with their money and if sales are down, they can only really blame themselves

Damn straight, that's exactly what I thought. I've seen no innovative or interesting content in their magazine and there are so many glaring mistakes that I always feel a little bit of me die when I read it...
HS4s on a Sprint? With a photo of an 1850 engine bay? Oh god, save me!

I have no great sadness if this is the death of RC, I do get it every month right now but that’s only through being too lazy to cancel my order for it. However I do think along the same lines as AlistairK if this spells the future death of printed mag’s. I have large amount of stuff 30, 40 even 50+ years old, love picking up a random copy and flicking through. How would you guarantee the format of an on-line mag would still be readable in 50 years’ time? Even if it did, somehow online stuff doesn’t date in style and presentation the way an old magazine does, and which for me is a big chunk of their appeal. Case in point – I’ve just bought this amazing magazine off eBay. 120+ large pages chock-full of articles and adverts, truly great (probably deserving of a thread in its own right, tonight maybe). Sorry, just can’t see an online equivalent or collection of wikipedia pages having the same appeal in 37 years. Or maybe I'm just old-fashioned? I love the immediacy of this place, but I don't need everything in my life to be so instant, most stuff can wait.

Man after my own heart! YES to bringing back street machine! What's all this "American Car World" gabble! ;D Custard car seems to be slipping as well, I can't see it holding out in it's current form too well. They need to expand their content slightly, before it implodes - I do love it though Shiny!

Street Machine was bought by eMap IIRC, and when it didn;t perform to their targets they decided to close it down. So Rich Nichols organised it to move over to a new publisher (or did he go self published?) anyway, they had to licence the name STreet Machine off eMap. After approx 2 years eMap decided that they would not allow the licence to be renewed and SM basically lost the name. They had a bit of notice so they started putting the "featuring American Car World" in larger and larger type in the heading until they then dropped the Street Machine banner when they lost the licence. They had to agree with eMap "terms of coverage". Basically they were not allowed to retain the old Street Machine format or content. American Car world was a sister magazine to Street Machine but it folded back years ago but people remembered it with fondness, so under the circumstances they did the best they could. Basically if they started featuring Mk2 Cortinas and the like now they could be sued by eMap. Sales are bouyant as I understand it with their American content so they are happy enough. They have a product that the (revised) target market like and buy. I don;t. I miss Street Machine. There was arumour that eMap was going ot relaunch it as a rival to Max Power or something all bodykits and chav noncense. But this never happened. eMap still hold the name and ther rights and all that. Custom Car - been some changes there so which revision do you mean? Kev Elliot left and a new guy took over, can';t remember his name but he was production editor on Jaguar Enthusiast and Pipe & Slippers Monthley before hadn. He brought in that "Quarantine" feature, better known as "a waste of two pages". Since he left I have heard that the magazine has vastly improved. I've only seen a couple of copies people I know who subscribe have as I can't find it in Smiths as our local now only stocks boy racer magazines and fishing publications. Looked good enough for me to want too subscribe again now. Have heard lots of positive comment on it in the last 2 - 3 issues in particular. And c'mon, broaden content? last issue I saw they had cars with fenders as well as without? How much broader can you get?

So emap hold the rights to SM.... and do we know anyone who (a) works for eMap in a magazine capacity and (b) understands the differences between 'retro' and mainstream classic enthusiasts??

My sister works for Future in Bath and mentioned the dwindling sales figures over the last year, other Future publications face the same destiny. The magazine relies on a fairly particular segment of the market, which PC more or less covers. I would only buy Retro Cars if there is a car of interest, and I usually am disappointed as the facts are not always correct. I buy to learn and to be inspired and I get all that on this and other forums.
I, like many people here, collect and thrive on the fact I have back issues of magazines but I personally would be more upset if the Retro-rides forum shut down. Online is the way forward, and we can come back to Retro cars magazine in a thread in 4 years time and wallow in some nostalgia!

Or maybe I'm just old-fashioned? I love the immediacy of this place, but I don't need everything in my life to be so instant, most stuff can wait. True,.. but well I'd like my magazines to have video clips and audio as well as pictures. I'd like my magazines to be searchable. I'd like to directly interact with my magazines.. and 50+ years of content? Seems to work for these people www.time.comWanna read a review of King KongThats the 1933 one,.. not the Peter Jackson remake. Now THAT is content.

there seems to be two paths this thread has taken - one related to the mag, and one the show. on the 'show' side of things, Hotwire and i have been in discussion for a number of months regarding a RR07 show. We know what we want to do, we have a venue lined up, but discussions are far from finalised. Nothing is concrete, but when it is it will be announced on here. In the meantine please maintain some enthusiasm that there could well be a place for us all to hang out at next year. btw - we are working for it to be a weekend event.

Well all i can say is that i will miss it ........ there is nothing like sitting down with a magazine and having a great read for a hour or two, i feel that looking on here is not atall like a magazine ... i will read on the loo but i wont take a lap top in there !!
For a long time people have banged on about all that is wrong with the magazine and how they would do better and now is the time to put your money where your mouth is .... if it is for sale go on and re-motgage your house and buy it !!
Some people go on about the web and how wonderfull it is and it is .......... as i never have to pay for anything, look at this site i have never so much as payed 50p to be on here for hours on end i enjoy it but it is No Magazine .
So to everyone who has slagged of the Magazine thanks alot if it closing down you will save me £3.99 a month which i can not even have a pint or two with ....... instead of just having a pop you should have got in touch with the staff there and gave them some feature ideas then it may have still been here ....so now i will sit down with this copy that arrived today ( issue 41 ) and have a good read ! so there thats my rant for today over just to say to the staff if they ever come in here thanks guys for that last 2 and a half years !!

if the mag was in touch with the readers they would have been browsing this forum anyway
in fact they might have been, and that would just make the whole situation worse. i cant believe we had the biggest club stand and no-one connected with the mag thought 'maybe i should check out R-R'

instead of just having a pop you should have got in touch with the staff there and gave them some feature ideas then it may have still been here ... If only some of us had thought to do that We have also taken an informed decision about taking on the Retro Cars title,.. and it just aint happening.. There is always the possibility that someone else will though as they are keen to sell it, we reckon one of the smaller publisher will go for it. What they will do with it remains to be seen... We'll know in 30 days time I guess. I for one am putting my money where my mouth is. New show, New magazine.

Will report back post read.

To me, the attitude of a magazine's staff is quite often neatly encapsulated within the 'staff cars' section... RC, PC, PPC, C&SC etc - they all have them and you get a good 'feel' for the ability and passion of the team.... Now look at the early 'workers playtime' features: great stuff about SimonW's Anglia 105E and Pug 205GTi... Bryn's adventures with silly volvo's & tyre-smoking BMW's etc... Then compare it to the recent stuff.... 'we bought a Citroen off ebay and polished the wheels a bit' 'we bought a pub-landlord-spec Jaguar off eBay and changed the wheels' 'we bought a van-engined porsche and made a half-ars'd track car by taking the carpet out' Are those the sort of cars / projects of committed retro enthusiasts....
