This is the latest addition to my fleet, a 1999 Mexican beetle I picked it up last night from Colchester, and it took the 180 mile home drive in its stride.. It's a 1.6 injection, lowered 2 splines at the rear, and has a 2" narrowed adjustable beam on the front, porsche pattern discs and drums all round, and Boxster S 17" twists. Plans are to fettle a few little electrical niggles, and generally enjoy it Mike

You could buy them new over here! They were brought in by Beetles UK. Price wise it depends on condition, you should find a good stock one for 3K or so... I'll get some better pics tomorrow when the sun comes out

Looks great. There's usually a Mexican bug or two for sale on ebay - just type "mexican beetle" into the search. They're pretty cool, and since most of them were bought by enthusiasts from the get-go many haven't had time to rot yet.

That looks like a polo 6n wheel so my guess would be that its post 89 large spline

late bugs use the same spline as mk1 and early mk2 golfs, later golfs had a spline adapter thing so it might just have one of them on it? so would be the same as any 70's bug

On my journey home about 40 miles away the 'universal warning light' started ligthing up, and the generator light started to glow.. I pulled over and checked everything and it all looked ok, so I took the decision to just drive home and investigate further when it was light. It turns out that it's a pretty common fault, and when the alternator brushes start to wear those are the symptoms that occur. True enough, the brushes were well and truly kippered, so i called up www.status-vw.co.uk and they hooked me up with a new set. I fitted them earlier and all is now hunky dory The other thing bugging me was the exhaust, it sounded like a Honda GX160! A little investigative work showed one of the exhaust studs was loose, I feared the worst at this point but threatened it with my trusty 13mm and it nipped up like a good 'un and sounds as it should now I've got a Grant 15" woodrim steering wheel on order for it, i've ordered the 74 on and mk1 Golf boss, so fingers crossed that'll fit! Other than the above, I've fitted my usb cd player, as it had a tape deck before, it went in without a fuss, and it's nice to have the stereo in the actual dash rather than trying to find it in the glove box! TTFN!

danozeman, bumpers are staying! late bugs look wrooooong without them! barnesy, yeah I was informed it was superchipped, and I found the original chip in the glovebox yesterday not sure how much difference it actually makes like, but it goes ok hairnet, glad I gave a lol Well, after an epic 3 hour battle, I've now got a rather gorgeous Grant Nostalgia wood rim steering wheel fitted. I can confirm that the mexi uses a spline adaptor on the old 74' on bug / mk1 golf spline... and it's also an absolute 'MARE to get off! It is now though, and i'm well chuffed with the results, even if it did involve a shed load of swearing and dismantling the steering column switch gear to do it! Pics tomorrow as it took me so long it got dark though.... ;D
