I have 14 years no claims which I use on my ford truck.
About 18 month ago I bought a cheap vitara for winter, I went on confused.com and got a quote using 0 no claims and got it insured for £220 with sureterm.
Been getting quotes for the jaguar I want, and I cant get a quote under £1000, out of curiosity I put the vitara I used to have into confused and it came up £650 with 0 no claims.
Am I missing something here, I myself am "confused". How come just over a year ago I could get one insured for £220 and now they want £650
Has premium prices sharply risen lately?

Yes, they must have, if for no other reason than the amount of times this topic is coming up.
Dad took his car off the road a few months ago to get it fixed, insurance policy sensibly cancelled and admin fees paid as per the contract. He looked at putting it on the road with an identical policy with the same company and his policy had TRIPLED in price. Needless to say he's going with another company, but even the guy on the phone at the insurance company couldn't understand it.
Personally, I'm terrified about renewal, my insurance is already on the edge of what I can afford.

similar story here, its caused me a lot of troubles tbh. my trade insurance renewal was over triple last years price. no way I could justify paying that much for the service, so ive cut down the amount of cars I have (on the road anyway) and me and the missus ended up on a multicar policy for the ones were using. it cost me as much to insure ONE car fully comp with driving other vehicles as it did for my trade policy last year.
the problem is there NOTHING you can do about it. you have to have insurance by law. they regulate themselves, and set their prices. you have to pay them if you want to drive legally, simple as that. tbh, the whole system stinks, no other service provider has their business given to them by law yet is able to price-fix as they're obviously doing.

cheers for the replys, this is a pain for me, and has pretty much shelved my plans for another car, I work 12 hours a day in my work van, I have my own ford truck as a run around, so I cant justify a huge insurance premium for a car that'll come out once a month

If it makes you feel any better the AVERAGE price for a year of BASIC car insurance in Canada is £866, as for what I pay to insure the Datsun, I don't even want to think about. Although given how many car crashes I've actually witnessed, let alone seen the aftermath of, I'm not surprised. The standard of driving here is...well sub-par to say the least. Oh and have an obligatory kitteh before it's locked.

Dez, the guy at our local garage had the same problem with his trade insurance, its trippled in price, he's over 60 and had the policy for many years. I wish the car places were as nice as my bike insurance, they gave me a multi bike policy for £300, and I can have any 5 bikes on the one policy as long as they are over 10 years old

I thought that being over 21 would have reduced my insurance but no its gone up by half as much again.
I'm looking for insurance on a new daily at the moment and the qoutes are frightening. I'm looking at £1200 for a 1.8 honda accord where as last year the same qoute was £700. I suppose now more than ever it pays to shop around. I also noted that the price I got from confuse the mearkats with opera was more than going direct.
Moral of the story do the work yourself and play the companys against each other. By doing this I got the Triumph renewal down from £840 to £618 and stayed on the same policy with the same company

Well, the fact inflation is always rising means insurance prices have to always be rising too.
But yeah, rise of car insurance is well above inflation it seems for many people.
Insurers are trying to shy away from "riskier" driver groups as they lose money there and compete for safer money.
As said, ambulance chasing and the increasing cost of repairs on more complex moderns is hitting them, also many of the underwriters and such are investors in or part owned by the banks who have been in financial problems of late, and many of the insurers are exposed to big losses in less stable EU economies and all sorts.
So yeah, its not just the shareholders needing more bubbly for the AGM shin digs.
Way its going you can look forward to it going up more too.

no other service provider has their business given to them by law yet is able to price-fix as they're obviously doing. gas electric phone companies broadband TV licence high street banks Water all "fixed" prices, self regulating and you got little choice but to pay. There are loads of them when you look.

My latest car cost £85/year fully comp to insure, I don't see the problem? Is everyone shopping around like they need to?
Even my Group 18 V8 Luxury Saloon costs under £300/year Fully Comp. I can't be the only one finding thsi is reasonable, and there's nothing spectacular about my situation.

Indeed, I'm being very careful before saying my insurance is dirt cheap because I know other people seem to be having problems. My Passat cost me £31 to add to my existing policy and that includes a £15 admin fee!
My whole fleet is insured for less than £250 a year, fully comp, agreed value, unlimited miles, all mods declared.

Alistair, I used to like you till i heard that, lol!!! I'm 800, but 4 cars and a trade policy makes that quite reasonable in my book. Come on folks, if this thread is to last, put pics of what your insuring at least . . . .

I saw a report a few weeks ago saying that insurance company's are going to be getting investigated about over charging and price fixing. I thought this would be a very good thing and would cause insurance company's to recoil and start to lower prices straight away. Now I think that insurance company's are expecting to be told "lower prices by X%" so the company's have inflated their prices to compsenate for this enforced price cut that may happen.
Just a guess, but we all know they're the most greedy and un righteous set of law abiding thieves, it makes my blood boil!

I managed to confuse the girl on the end of the phone when I was sorting my insurance out:
To go from 3rd party, to fully comp+use of other cars, DROPPED the price by £200??
But still, £500+ for a tatty old rover 200 (bubble shape, not even the "retro" boxy ones!) is still a rather large amount in my books.....
