Okay, pic of what I'm insuring. This is costing me about £1000 full comp. Kept garaged in the lowest risk postcode you can get. I had to shop around a lot for a quote that low too. I'm a new driver, and most insurers tell me that since I'm under 30 (I'm 29 for a few more weeks) I'm also a young driver (which... wtf?). No claims or convictions, but also have no NCB yet. When I was in Sheffield, with the same insurer, I was paying about £1200. When I first started looking at quotes, the average was in the £1600-1800 price range. I got quotes for the car unmodified too, and the quotes were coming back at only £100 less than modified. The amount I'm paying is, of course, ridiculous for a slow 26 year old VW, but I don't have much choice and many other people in my situation have the same problem. Mods declared being suspension and alloys, the other stuff - bumpers, paint, interior - don't alter the price as they're considered cosmetic by the insurer. I'm with Admiral. There was a bit of a fiasco with my insurance too. Sabre underwrite most modified policies and when I first got insurance I had two policies cancelled by the insurer at short notice and through no fault of my own because the insurance companies said they would insure me and set the ball rolling without confirming that the underwriter would actually support them. For that reason I'd say to avoid The Green Car Insurance Company and Performance Direct. Specialist insurers like Peter James, Footman James and Lancaster won't touch me because I haven't got a second car (but do have access to Dad's on his insurance) and I haven't had my license for 12 months. It took my brother, myself and my Dad going through insurance companies into double figures before I got a quote and Admiral were a bit of a surprise after the big names and the specialist insurers wouldn't touch me. I was told the combination of the car itself and my inexperience meant my insurance was high. Other things I learned was that once you get a quote, either online or on the telephone, with one insurer it's shared with a massive number of insurers. Of the companies out there supposedly offering specialist insurance they seem to be underwritten by two or three companies so you can't really get a competitive quote easily.

Meh. Shush, all of you.
Two vehicles, 2007 Chevy Silverado and a 2010 Chevy Impala come in for the wife and I at about $3900 a year. I asked at the insurance agency and adding the GTA to the policy would be an extra $62 a month for a limited mileage policy.

Yeah but, with the exchange rate, dollar to the pound, that about £4.57...... ;D
Isn't insurance optional in the states tho? (that's still bloody expensive tho!)

Yeah but, with the exchange rate, dollar to the pound, that about £4.57...... ;D Isn't insurance optional in the states tho? (that's still bloody expensive tho!) Packet of cigs and a donut, to you. No, only a few states don't have insurance requirements. Thoroughly odd if you ask me. Alabama is one that doesn't. We do, and we are a neighboring state- but for them to travel here, they don't need to purchase insurance??? If they wreck it can be a right mess of paperwork. That and they have a nasty habit of looking for out-of-state plates to wreck into, so the other party's insurance covers the cost and they get a new car off the other driver. I guess that's part of why it is so costly. Still, not cheap! --Phil

The Bluebird cost me £500 to insure, Up from £300. I'm 29 and its only 1.6 slow lane hogger! Shopped around too but everyone else wanted £1000+! The van costs me £800 too, though that is a work-use commercial policy..so Thats £1300 to insure this exotic collection.

One way to get around pricier insurance is to try confused.com last . Doing so before, and then going back to the insurers results with them 'marking' you (noticed how for Admiral they then go off your confused login details...). That and only on one occasion have I had a policy cheaper via confused.com. It's a pain to shop around, but it still seems to work. Like Al, on the pre '89s I am not stung that badly (one of them is on a traders' policy via a friend (shared car)). The Stag oddly is almost the cheapest car I've insured like Al's. Being a Multicar policy probably helped. I shall not lie though, even my daily policies have crept up slightly.

I'm starting to think its all utterly random (for the most part) it doesnt seem to matter if your driving for years without any crashes and no points. If your 24 (like me) your a highrisk.. Now I'm sorry but i was sure thats ageism! They arnt allowed to charge you more for being male now (part of the reason the prices went up) So how is it fine for charging a silly amount for being a certain age.. I drive for a living.. Day in , Day out covering hundreds of miles and i still havnt had an accident! It means zilch anymore. Considering the prices of things now. Theres going to be a HELL of alot more people struggiling/ finding it impossible to get to work now. It seems that from when ive heard this discussed before on tv/radio. You allways get some twonk saying its fine... public transport is at its lowest price, You can get anywhere on that. Seems strange that both ME and my DAD work in seperate places. But that you cant get public transport to either of them. Sorry for the rant but its realy p*ssing me off now.. I shouldnt have been litterally forced off the road like this! I physically cant afford a car! And ive SHOPPED AROUND alot for insurance. It never drops lower than £800 odd for a little snotter.

I got a quote for the standard when I first got it with all mods declared at £180.89 a year. Just checked it and its jumped up to £182.60!!!! Thats through a specialist, nearest competitor is £1000 more.
Also changed from a 1.4 astra estate (£85/month) to a 1.6 multipla and insurance went up to £135/ month, came down to £100/month on a 1.2 clio, now with the BMW its still cheaper than the multipla at £120/month. When I got the quote I was told it was so much due to my mrs, who had a drink driving conviction however without her its £40 a month more for just me!

Mine doesn't seem to have actually got any worse. But then it also hasn't got any cheaper, despite another years driving and another years no claims. I just did a moneysupermarket quote for my Passat out of curiosity (renuals due in a couple of months), and the best came up as Admiral at £664. (That's aged 22, 4 years driving, 2 years no claims, cheap/safe post code, 10k a year, 1 previous low cost parking shunt against my name 3 years ago, no convictions, and my mum as a named driver, driving a 67bhp/ton diesel Passat estate.)
I'd have said that actually, it seems to be making less difference to me about the higher risk drivers, it seems to be the general base price to get insured that's gone up, and then the added risk is still making about the same amount of difference it always has done. Slow cars aren't much cheaper for me to insure than fast ones, and another years no claims makes £20 difference for me, mentioning a claim I have from a few years ago vs not mentioning it makes £10 difference, they seem to just want to charge me about the same regardless of circumstance.

^^^ which basically makes it price fixing.^^^ they know what you can afford, so keep charging you that much cos they know youll pay it regardless......
I'm 27, 9yrs driving, 2 yrs no claims, I accident in the last year, cheap/safe postcode, offstreet parking, etc. etc. and the lowest insurance price I can get on ANY car is £560. (luckily, that car is the lada and not something totally rubbish that I hate). as robin says though, it doesnt really go up by more than 200 quid to be insured on anything, including high performance imports, which just means the base rate is how a hell of a lot higher than it was.
intrestingly, adimral was also by far and away the cheapest for me and the missus- even before they took off another £200 between us for the multicar discount. their modification cover is a bit sketchy (its done as a % of car value rather than true worth, so you can have £800 worth of wheels on a £500 car, but youre only covered for about £100 if they get nicked), and you even have to pay extra for that, but at least they do cover pretty much any mod without issue rahter than having to drive a standard car.
another point to remember is that if your insurance renewal is the same price even though you have gained another years no claims, thats actually a 20% increase on what you paid last year...........

My daily is a Mk1 Focus RS (a stupid choice but when I bought it I was only doing 70 miles a week and blimey they were fun miles!).
I've got 11 years no claims, 3 points and keep the car in a low risk area. I'm also 32 years young.
I went to several "specialists" who refused to insure me, even the company who the RS Owners club recommend. I also tried my current insurer who wanted £1394 to renew the policy! After lots of interneting and phone calls, I got a policy for £670 and jumped on it.
Quite how there can £700+ difference between insurers is nuts! The fact that my old company also took the renewal amount despite me cancelling the policy and then took 9 days to refund it is another story.
I guess the point of my rambling story is, shop around and the shop around some more. I ended up going through Sheilas Wheels, much to the amusement of all of the fellas I know but you can't argue with a saving like that.

I'm currently on a career break, fortunate enough to have enough to live on until i decide what i wanna do and where i wanna live, anyway, I'm 34 with 10yrs NCB 100% clean licence from 1995, car parked off road on drive way or in garage.
Quotes:
1995 polo 1.3 tpft - £823 1997 mec c180 tdpft - £972 2002 clio 1.5 dci tpft - £650
All the above was without windscreen and legal cover.
About 2/3yrs a go i was getting quotes for a 1997 BMW M3 EVO fully comp for £600
The reason mine has gone up is a joke, the answer i got from a few companies is as follows:
"its because your not working sir, your able to drive around for an extra 9yrs a day when others are at work" - err WTF!!! my answer was that if others are at work then the roads are less busy.
so because I'm able to take a career break and afford to, even paying the annual cost in one go I'm penalised.

current best quote ive had on the kp30, is £98 fully comp on a limited mileage. although thats garaged and I'm sure the age of the vehicle has a lot to dso with that. this was the whole reason i got into retros in the first place. they are a lot easier to insure!
i got a quote on a 1.4 corsa b and regardless of me being 25 and a clean licence the best i could get was £1348 quid! i didnt want the car but it was being sold cheap, and thought i could use it as a daily. the insurance quotes made sure i didnt.. utter garbage.

It does seem to be a bit of a lottery tbh.
Last year I ran an XJ40 3.2s which cost me £350 to insure. I'm 37 with 0 ncb, second car, off road parking etc etc
I transfered my Merc190 2.0e policy (modern classic with FJ @£180/yr) to a Merc 300CE W124, which is a much more powerful car, and all I had to pay was the admin of £20 !

No Claims Bonus usually steps in 5% bands, so it would be a 5.27% increase, unless it was your first year of No Claims accrued.

Well the Holden 5.0 V8 was £198 fully comp. Granted, thats on a classic policy, but for that price with unlimited miles, and European breakdown cover, you cant complain. Thats with Footman James When i switch it to my new project, it will come down to £128

My daughter has just turned 17, and weve managed to get her a minter 03 Ka from a friend for £800, Phoned up numerous companies for quotes, with me as a named driver and her as the main user while she is learning. Best quote came in at £2600, but as soon as she passes her test, she will have to cancel the policy and re insure at £3200 and that is with a 5000mile limit and £1000 exess. There is no wonder kids these days don't want to work when they have no spare money due to paying bills
Thinking about it thats all i go to work for !!!

Try classicline.co.uk
They'll insure a 'classic' on a daily kind of policy, ie. only car. They quoted me around £550 on both a Porsche 924S and Porsche 944 2.5, living in Birmingham, 7 years no claims and being 26 - bargain!

I think I can live with that sort of increase.
