have average insurance prices gone up?

This thread doesn't have many accurate statements about why insurance has gone up. Which is a shame.

Firstly there isn't price fixing. In fact it's practically the opposite! Motor Insurance is extremely competitive and is the hardest market for insurers to deal with. The industry as a whole does not make any profit on motor insurance. That's a fact. It made a loss of nearly £2bn last year. That's a loss of about £60 per policy written.

This underwriting loss never used to be an issue because the funds collected would be invested. This additional income would supplement the insurers revenue and bring them in to a profitable situation.

Since investment income has considerably dropped over the last few years, the insurers have to raise premiums to tighten the gap.

Comparison sites (or aggregators as the industry calls them) may not be helping matters either. It increases competition between insurers, actually making their pricing harder.

In addition there's fraud - both organised and opportunistic (i.e. whiplash) along with accident management companies encouraging people to make claims. Personal Injury claims are generally making it harder.

there is a way round this mate, you can insure the new car and sorn the old one.

Its totally legal to own a car with no insurance policy, but it must be sorn'd

If it's taxed yes it is illegal.

I've had a license for only 2 years 2 months, my insurance is now under £330 on a modified Dolomite insured as a daily. Admittedly I'm 23 and live in the middle of nowhere, but still, anything else is over double that. Though I did win £100 off my next policy, so that's handy ;D

As a 42 year old, with 9 years no claims and no accidents/points, the insurance increases do my bloody head in. The Lexus IS200 daily is nearly £500 a year no matter what I do. Luckily the Saab is only £140 a year with Peter James. Shame they couldn't do anything for the daily, when I enquired, the best they could offer was £1300.
