I have a massive soft spot for prefacelift E30s and I couldn't resist buying this back in December from the sales section, it was a proper bargain 8) . I got a lift from Suffolk to Manchester and drove it 230miles home. The car itself is really good considering it's 25 or so years old and done over 170K miles. The shell is pretty much immaculate and only needs a few dings pulled and out some paint touched up. The interior though... You'll see! Here it is when I bought in Manchester. Best seat covers ever??? In its previous life it was a General Lee replica!! We stopped at the inlaws in Stoke on Trent that night, the next day I used it to tow a trailer tent back to Suffolk I forgot how cold it was last winter… The only problem I found was that the brakes caused severe vibrations when braking from 60mph, just what you need when pulling a trailer home! A few days later back in the workshop I converted the front brakes to vented discs with new discs and pads. You can see how worn and warped the old disc was That’s better! The car then ran out of tax and I left it laying a shed for 4-5 months… until last night!

I’ve recently broken an E34 535i and had the M30 3.5 engine laying around, so a plan was formed. Yesterday I ordered a waterpump, sump gasket, thermostat and oil filter. I also ordered some engine mounts off E30zone which allows this engine to bolt in to the E30 shell. Pushed out into the light… …and into the workshop of DOOM. Not many cars make it back out in one piece! I must of spent 15mins on my own trying to get the front wheels up that step and into the workshop, since I couldn't get it to start . This is the last picture of how it was... I absolutely blitzed the car, I managed to get the bonnet off, exhaust off, prop off, everything disconnected and the engine out in 2hrs 30mins. Probably a personal best for me... Mandatory engine removal photos... I’ll degrease and powerwash the engine bay prior to the M30 fitting Trusty M10 And it's replacement, the M30 3.5 I'm going to be using the M10 box rather than the M30 box because of the flywheel weight. Look at the size difference! Stay tuned, the deadline is the Retro Show at the start of July

Mucho respect! I've often toyed with the idea of dropping a bigger engine into my 518 and if I ever get round to it, it's gotta be a big six. Has anyone ever run one on carb's?

Good work Rob! Seeing this makes me pine for the day when the TWR is finally finished. Trying to buy this triple Dellorto 45 set-up to go on it too.

Your builds are always such an inspiration, looking forward to seeing more of this one! Mucho respect! You see tripple webers/dellortos from time to time, but they're quite rare. You could have a manifold made up though, the carbs themselves aren't too rare. Although building a throttle linkage will be a challenge Obviously bike carbs are an option too. Not sure how the ignition is done on these, but as they're quite an old school engine they might have a separate ignition system?

Rob I love your crazy BMW Projects! Looking forward to seeing the progress on this. Love the Clean simpleness of Early E30's Thanks very much! Really cool. You going to keep it badged as a 316? Hell yes, it would be more effort to debadge it and there's no way I'm going to make a "335i" badge. Plus removing it is removing some of it's history, not cool! looks good, was that the tesco in altrincham where you picked it up? Well spotted . I actually bought the car from Sale and stopped off in Altrincham to drop some E21 parts off to a friend. Mucho respect! I've often toyed with the idea of dropping a bigger engine into my 518 and if I ever get round to it, it's gotta be a big six. Has anyone ever run one on carb's? Sounds like a plan! Yes, it's been done, as Mark as mentioned. Someone else I know someone who has run an M30 on carbs too, personally I know nothing about doing it! Fuel injection for BMW engines is great, just hook the engine loom up to some power and you have an up and running engine. Your builds are always such an inspiration, looking forward to seeing more of this one! Thanks man, means a lot! Go on ya good thang Are you for keeping the tacky seatcovers, and the confederate flag too? Tacky seat covers - no Confederate flag - yes! This is a part of the car's character!
