I don't mean this in a bad way, but the marina guys know they are driving something that was never very good, when they should just been enjoying it as a classic or retro.. and now spend pretty much all there time shouting and screaming about how good they are.... I mean lets face it, its a 70's car, it was proven as a pretty lacking car then , its got nothing to proove now, and I agree that top gear are stringing it out, but in a way the marina guys are bringing it on emselves... and don't say I don't know they are curse word, we have had three in the family, two were runarounds while a project was being worked on and the other was meant to be but was so buggered we weighed it. the two runners were sub 100quidders that were scrapped after use... And that is why so few remain. They aren't brilliant cars, we know that, and it's the automotive equivalent of one of those creatures almost on the edge of extinction that isn't quite cuddly enough to warrant an expensive WWF campaign to save it. But, there are still people out there who know the history of the car, have used them daily and for motorsport (it was a succesful rally car before BL decided Triumph would carry the motorsports flag...) and would like to keep what few are left going without some sport-hunter blasting pot-shots at us for cheap laughs. Each to their own....

It's funny how there's been a lot of fuss about these M*r*nas, yet when a pretty tidy XJ40 was recently used in the leaping caravan stunt, very few people seem bothered..... Hmmmmmm...... Becoz, there are lots more XJ40's left on the road than there are Marinas. Thinking along that line, how many Hyundai Scoupe's are left? After all, Hamster managed to destroy a fairly tidy one of them the other week.....

These guys that come to buy the marinas for the bbc iirc tell the owners they are from topgear.... if the marina people are worried so much they wouldnt sell to em.... cant sell it knowing full well whats going to happen only to moan about it.... Top Gear don't buy the cars themselves, they use third parties to do so who (and I have this from someone who should know....) will lie through their back teeth to get a car. We have the same trouble with a few Morris Minor people as well, but they are well known to the Club(s) now. The car that was torched last series was bought for 'restoration', the blue one that was smashed was claimed by a BBC bod to have been the stunt car they used (yeah, right!). the white one was sold on through two or three people after being offered through Ebay and not being sold, shame as it was a 19000 mile from new car and apart from a crusty front valance was solid. I believe one more is to be destroyed this series which was bought off Ebay.... it's all getting a bit boring now. Anyhoo, they clearly spent some serious £ on prepping those cars as I doubt bespoke Porsche, Nissan and Morris roll cages are available in France and the hubs on the Marina needed some serious 4 to 5 stud adaptors made specially, and I suspect they wouldn't have been allowed near the circuit without some mandatory safety equipment fitted (all of which makes the 'spontaeneousness' of the challenges look really stupid...). Mind you, I think Fuzzey was right, Captain Slow genuinely seemed chuffed the old girl finished the race! (about the only 'unscripted' bit in the whole saga methinks...) It's quiet over on the Marina Forum because we had a right royal go at the Mods for letting any mong on the board last time and they've instigated a delay in registering new members, apart from one original twerp called 'Jeremy Clarkson'....(who has since been suspended).

Shame about the Special, rare as hens teeth and only 19000 miles..... Still, they inadvertantly did the No1 thing to improve a Marinas handling - widen the track and fit decent width tyres! I do like the 300's, one of my mates had one back in the day and it was the bollix. That Capri was hanging before they started though...

We need to work with ACE who are doing a good job of keeping us up to date, to in effect fight our corner. Nobody else is going to do it for us! EXACTLY! I may come across as moaning, but unless someone rattles the cage to get attention....... ACE do a superb job and we need to work with them (and I don't just mean us on here, but all affiliated Clubs/Societies etc) to do what we can to get this mess sorted out.

What I will say to the mods, DON'T PUT THIS IN THE WHINGE BIN - IT'S TOO DAMNED IMPORTANT! Wind your neck in. So, the question is this: The system is a bureacratic mess (who could have guessed a government department would be!?) ,.. what can be done about that? It's a deliberate mess, to make people give up. Without a major shift in the way the country is run, it won't happen, but its no excuse for not raising the matter..... or do we just give up and buy some modern tat with the "manufacturer's lifestyle mods". Discuss.

It backs up what the VOSA Inspector told me when I was having the Ital inspected after the Plod got some more tax out of me for tinted windows... There are MAJOR deficits at DVLA and it appears that they won't train anyone up because they want to drive anything vaguely modified off the roads, and the easiest way is to have a bunch of muppets who don't have a clue blaming the management who don't care. Apart from dropping a dirty bomb on Swansea and wiping the DVLA memory, there isn't much we can do - from what I've seen, up until recently its been an "I'm alright Jack!" attitude from most factions of Classic/Modified car fans and those who have tried to raise this issue have been unceremoniouisly slagged off, both on t'interweb and in the media. The DVLA has become a massive, bloated monolith with little regard for its 'customers'; bottom line, it's a tax-generating machine and nowt more. They have you over a barrel and unless you can persuade the sheep who infest our roads with cheap eastern tat moderns to take a stand with us (which they won't because they're too damned scared), we're going to have to play an interesting game. Grrr What I will say to the mods, DON'T PUT THIS IN THE WHINGE BIN - IT'S TOO DAMNED IMPORTANT!

I know next to nothing about trains but am I right in thinking that there's some kind of conveyor system to keep the coal available at that hole where you shovel it from? Yes? So why don't they make the conveyor chute about 6 feet longer so it reaches the boiler and then you don't have to shovel, or is it just to do with Victorian work-ethics or something? They did eventually, but this is a reproduction of a 1940's designed loco. AKAIK, 71000 "Duke of Gloucester" (a semi-experimental BR steam loco) had a mechanical stoker because the firing rate was so high, and recent tests put its max Hp at somewhere around 3,250Hp with a continuous Hp at 2,700-ish. Not bad for some old 'kettle'!

99.9% of modern cars are not cars, but appliances like washing machines. They have no soul, are designed by computer instead of some sweaty blokes in a smoke-filled drawing office and have any slight semblance of character or foibles engineered out. They are boring, disposable, interchangeable tat, churned out to make the balance sheet read right and thats it.... a sort of mechanical accountant or lawyer. Oh, and most are either silver, grey, black or.... silver.... zzzzzzz
My definition of a retro is a car you automatically turn round and look at as you walk away from it, with (most of the time) the knowledge you've persuaded it to get THIS far today.....

Think laterally, it's to all intents and purposes a Honda Civic with a different badge and rear end, so have a google on them. I ran one for a couple of years, a diesel, on 17" straights and fiddled with the turbo and cat to release some extra poke - went like sugar off a shovel in the end. Got shot when RAC bolloxed up replacing the windscreen and wouldn't admit to it... some Polish bloke bought it on a dry day....

Why is it that you seem to have at least 8 Marinas in your signature? Do you own all of these cars or was this some kind of show. You mentioned that you owned all of the Marinas in NZ, so I wondered if they were all yours. If so, what on earth for? Some kind of business? No mate, it's like this - Marinas are a bit like unwanted pets, when someone finds out you're interested, they keep turning up on your doorstep! I've had loads like that, lots of which were rusted to death but the two I presently have came to me that way, and I wouldn't be without them. Those banded Spitty wheels have got me thinking about my estate....
