Just down the road from where I am working at the moment is a guy who owns two Mustangs and a Harvard; he is rebuilding a Merlin engine for a customer in a shed round the back of his house and allegedly has a race Merlin being shipped in for a rebuild. Usually on a Sunday, if the weather is OK he goes out 'for a spin' - fast! He was chatting about upsetting the Police chopper last time I was there.... ;D Have a butchers at this, though...

Evidently the guy stored the car at the rear of his house, but open to a back lane, with no dizzie or battery. They turned up with a transporter and had the car away in 6 minutes, the guy was in the house and thought that the noise he could hear was the weekly refuse wagon, which normal arrives around the same time.

Hi Mate, nice van there.... Seeing as you've got the 440, it is standard Marina running gear so any 3 3/4 x 4 stud will fit which are (deep breath...) Small Triumph PCD (GT6 wheels look good and fairly standard), TR7 wheels, Dolomite with spacers, then (with Grayston spacers) you have Maestro/Montego rims, MGF/TF and ROVER Metro/100. Some older Fiats will go on with persuasion (and wobble bolts). Seeing as you've got a late van, you should also have telescopic front shocks as standard - they are the same as LDV 200 series front shocks for the upgrade. Plenty of tuning bits for the A+ engine, just try and avoid the MiniTax...... Have fun!

Can't find the old thread, so here starteth the new.... (tho I expect someone will dig it up...)..
The old shed was laid up last October with serious chassis rot on the nearside front leg, so after the weather stopped falling to bits I replaced copious amounts of rotted tin with new sheetmetal, soorted out various other maladies with shocks and rot and got her ready for the MOT. Amazingly neither the clutch or brakes were stuck and the rest wasn't too bad, so after replacing the wipers, an indicator bulb and some fresh petrol I toddled off to the MOT station - except the nearside front wheen decided to part company en route! I had done the nuts up to 'drop one gonad' tight, clearly they needed 'drop two gonads'..... Anyhoo, luckily I was travelling slowly behind an old git in a Scrappage crapper so I was able to stop safely - and the fact the Ital has fibreglass wings which popped off allowing the wheel to toddle its merry way down the road (having recently seen a 57-plate SEAT with a wheel gone AWOL, the damage on that was colossal!). I collected what I could find, walked home, got a jack/wheelbrace and was back in five mins; up with the car, on with the wheel, pinch a bolt from the nearside rear to put three on the front, tape the wing back on and home again! The total damage was a bent brake shield, scratched paint and apart from the wing, a busted grease nipple.... the wing was Tiger Sealed back on, a quick phone call later and yesterday she sailed through the MOT with no advisories but in desperate need of fresh petrol! What was a giggle was the look on the local Plods face as he drove past trying to find this 'badly damaged car', only to see it tucked up on my drive looking as though nothing had happened!

I have been having some fun welding the lower edge of the Ital estate's front chassis leg this week; it's now all solid metal and once I've painted it will be soused in something to kill/stop rust... anyway, that's not the "Oh God!" moment. That was brought to me by a very earnest young lady wearing a rosette and carrying a clipboard who was trying to drum up support so she could stand for erection.... sorry, election I was accosted by said lady as I went to do some more work on the car and after asking if I'd pen my name to her application, I asked what her views were on recycling.... cue five minutes of zealous propaganda about the 'throw-away society' et al.... so I asked whether my recycling of an old car was 'environmentally sound'....... I could have molested a kitten in front of her and had a less 'shocked' reaction.... No, No, No, my old car was a gas-guzzling relic that MUST be destroyed and replaced by a new 'green' car. I pointed out the carbon footprint of bringing a car into the world was greater than the Ital would ever produce but she was in cloud cuckoo land, whittering on about pollution, safety, think of the children, etc, etc, then had the gall to ask me to sign her application....... Guess what my answer was. ;D

The ones they used in the Ice race, the Marina, Porker 924 (I think) and 300ZX I last saw at Wings and Wheels day in Dunsfold... Being ripped apart by a bunch of traveller kids. Jumping up and down on the roof, pulling stuff out of the boot... I was mildly annoyed by this. I'm surprised the Marina came back - last I heard it was left in France at a scrappy....... waste of a 19,000 mile car, though.....

Had a Mk2 Cav back in the '80's which had the habit of locking the rear wheels with no warning when braking - did it coming down a hill near Bath at fast speed, Missus doing her slap in the passenger seat, me looking out the passenger side window at the car and caravan coming up the hill and after I'd gathered it all together and got my butt to stop chewing the seat pad, all she could say was "This lipstick doesn't suit me, does it.....?"... Had a set of new brake pads disintegrate a day after I fitted them... My old Marina Special had a good trick of turning its headlights out, usually when thacking down a country lane in the pitch black..... Snapped a halfshaft on one of my estates (more embarrassing than anything...) Parked a Montego sideways across the A14 by the Orwell bridge trying to avoid a bloody JCB in the rush hour......

I built a Phaeton back in the late '80's (Christ, that shows my age....) out of a Escort Mk1 GT Estate (terminally rotten). Dutton never had good QC (in fact I think the only QC they knew was in court.....) so the inner tub didn't fit the chassis and I had to cut it out, fit it first then fit the outer shell and mong the two together; the front suspension was a Ford/Triumph/Dutton mix and they buggered up the coilover mount - their answer was a piece of 1" gas pipe and longer mounting bolts.... I ran it on Weller eightspokes with the 'old' 175 section tyres (you know, they say 175 but have a tread width of about 145.....) so it handled like a Bambi on ice, BUT it was great fun and took us all over Somerset. Had to sell it when child No 1 was born, and she's now nearly 21........ It still exists according to the DVLA, with a 1600 instead of the knackered 1300 and yes, despite it being a right dog to build I would buy it back again if the chance came up....... ;D

Sounds like the hydraulic part of the overdrive isn't getting enough pressure. Have you got the correct grade of oil in it? The filter may be blocked, the pump worn or the actuator pistons so basically it ain't pushing the clutch mech in hard enough. without first dropping the oil to check its condition and getting the filter out, its difficult to make an analysis.
