Please don't go for anything bigger than the lip spoiler! Anything bigger and it ruins the lines of the car imo. Looks a lovely example, I'm quite jealous! I bought an E36 318is in March, and I've loved it thus far. It's a bit rough, has rubbish ACS replicas, and an indigo blue velour interior (which I love) but despite all that it's ace! Have a pic or 2 of mine:

Well I tried heating the barrel with the blowlamp until too hot to touch, and used my spring compressor/box section/block of wood puller arrangement to try and pull the centre out, and managed to shift one, but the other two still refuse to budge, to the point that one of my spring compressors sheared.
I think I need to get the barrels hotter

Are you sure they're an interference fit? The one that I did manage to split came relatively easily with no heating, just a few clouts from the lump hammer on a block of wood.
My theory is that the mating face between the barrel and the centre is corroded together through years of exposure to brake dust and road salt, but I'm not certain.
My idea with the oven was to warm the whole lot up, and then freeze spray the centre to make the centre contract and hopefully more willing to budge.
Otherwise I might have to find someone with proper oxyacetylene gear to warm them up properly

Haha cheers for the suggestions guys!
I've gone down the lump hammer and block of wood route already, I think the heat/cold route might be a winner. The blowlamp I have is poxy and only gets them warm to the touch, so I might see if they'll fit in the oven (when swmbo is out!)
Any idea where I might get the freeze spray from?

Yeah I'd considered that, but there's nothing to use a scissor jack against, the barrel of the wheel is one piece, no sealant needed, I'm just trying to get the centre out of the middle, but it seems to be seized/corroded into place and I can't apply enough force to shift it? See in the pic below - the face of the wheel bolts up to a lip in the barrel and pushes out from the front to back

I have a set of BBS style 5's to go on my E36 3 series, and I'm trying to take the centres out of the barrels so I can have them refurbed and painted. The problem is that I've removed all of the bolts and successfully split one, but the other 3 centres just refuse to budge from the barrels. I've tried heating the barrels, repeated use of rubber mallets to try and break em free, and even a puller arrangement using a metal bar and some threaded rod. They've all been soaked in WD40 again and again for over 2 weeks and I'm all out of ideas. I really don't want to damage them, and even wondered if they were fake splits for a bit until I managed to split the first one. Has anyone got any bright ideas as to what else I can try? I'll give anything a go as they're doing my head in! Cheers

Wow, that's really impressive. Must be a real sense of satisfaction you get from building that from scratch, and scavenging bits where possible too.
It might just be me, but in that last photo it looks a lot bigger than I'd imagined. Now it's out of your back yard it's easier to get a sense of perspective I guess.

Coilovers are on That was straight off the jack, it's settled a fair bit already. (the schnitzers might find their way back on, but the wheel weights foul on the adjuster rings)

I love how this thread made it to 5 pages. Wonder how many it would have got to if the builder had remained anonymous.
When you dispense with all the hype, he's a skinny ginger white boy, and he builds 'stanced' cars, takes nice pictures of them and posts them on the internet. He's just like me and you!
Personally I like it. It's not perfect, but I can definitely appreciate the effort that's gone into it. Plus if the noise doesn't stir your soul, then you're dead inside.

I find Footman James are good if your car's not quite retro yet, but just old.
They'll put anything over 15 years old on a classic policy, which meant my '94 seven series sneaked in on limited mileage. A 4 litre 300bhp V8 luxo barge, driven by a 27 year old with 3 points for a smidge over £200 for the year, I thought that was pretty reasonable.
When I got my 3 series (which is only 13 years old) they insured it as a 'future classic' for similar money.
They are a pig to get hold of on the phone though, wasted hours of my life on hold to them.

Yeah I'm certain I saved this one from becoming just such a vehicle. The lad who sold it to me 'upgraded' from the bimmer to a very smoky Punto turbo, each to his own I guess!
I have grown rather fond of the schnitzers, but style fives have been high on my want list for a while.
That Tim Harvey picture is my new desktop, got me reminiscing about back when the BTCC was proper!

Cheers for the comments guys, I'll pass on your regards to Finlay! A few little bits to report, I've spent the last few Saturdays fixing all the niggly problems on the car, and it's made it a 100% nicer place to be. I fitted a new window regulator, and after much head scratching sussed out what was causing random stuff to come on and off, and fuses to blow. The section of wire between the boot lid and the body had chafed through and a cluster of 4 wires were shorting against each other. 10 mins and some electrical tape - sorted! The M3 replicas that the car wore when I bought it had borderline tyres, one of which had a puncture, so I picked these up as a stop gap, all with decent rubber for £150: These are OK, but they're boring rattle can satin black replicas, so I decided the car needs some proper wheels. After a stroke of luck on ebay, I spent last night picking these up from a nice chap in Stoke: With a refurb and some stretched rubber I think they will do the job nicely!

Thanks for the heads up! I spotted the car on stanceworks, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on your blog in future. As for wheel choice, I have in my posession some 18x8.5 Schnitzer replicas, but I've tried them on the car and due to the offsets they don't fit by a mile, would require mega stretch and arch mods to cram in there, which is a road I don't really want to go down. Because of this I bought some 17x8s in the same style, but with no dish and higher offsets. I'm going to wait until the coilovers arrive and see if I can get them to fit right. I've also looked into getting some 17" BMW steels, but at £320 a set from BMW it's not really an option.

Ah thanks for all the positive comments! I deliberately wanted one with no rear spoiler and the non M sport bumpers, I think the lines of the car are so much nicer without em. It's a 318is, in Arctic Silver, with an indigo blue velour sports interior. It's leaking oil from the rocker gasket, the passenger window regulator is broke (the window was cable tied shut by the previous owner : and the back box is blowing. Not major jobs, I've got the window reg on order, and I think I'll order a rocker gasket over the weekend. Funny you should mention about the pram, I hadn't thought about it at all, but luckily I tried ours last night, and it just fits in there! I'll have a think and drop you a PM if I can think of anything I need, cheers Gregg.
