Not quite retro but currently running an Audi b6 130 6 speed as a daily. Been from 100k to 140k with only cambelt, brakes and a split intercooler. Amazing economy and on the road performance to match the 106 Gti once remapped. Can get a clean car for about a grand. Don't let high miles put you off. Low mileage diesel's are aren't happy diesel's

If I was to bid 40,000 on all his dodgy cars could I get in trouble or would he remove?

Always loved watching dad fix the family cars, Mk1 1300es and then e24 BMW 628csi. Remember being told by dad the difference in spark colour between welding and grinding, and how I wasn't allowed to watch welding. The first clear car memory I have is when I was about 4. I had been to the local bmx track with my dad and his work mates to watch them race their Tamiya's (dad had a ball raced 14t boomerang) when it came to home time dad's old apprentice said he would drop me and my brother home in his Chevette HS. In my 4 year old head we drove home at 120mph and went sideways at every roundabout. In reality it was probably just noisy and made an impression. 27 years later I used the same chevette as my wedding car and the year later I had my twin boys in it for a ride. I am hoping to make the same impression on them, and thanks to still being in touch with dad's friends I'm lucky enough to use the chevette until my nova is back on the road. That's a project for when my boys are old enough to help.

I got mine from dad's work ( national rail) many years ago. Not sure on brand but I know it had a list price of about £200 or something ridiculous.

I bet I am one of only a few that own a cable tie gun, ensuring correctly torqued and flush cut cable ties?

I hope the logbook is not for sale either as thats illegal - in fact it should have been surrendered to the DVLA. The car has been removed from database with a covering letter of destruction and the logbook is simply a decoration on a wall. Along with number plates of every car or bike we have owned.

There is always a reason and it's up to the owner to do what they want with them. On my dad's drive are 2 rotten 1300e Mk1 escorts. They have been there for at least 15 years. In the garage he has spent that time buying every panel, trim, light etc to restore one to as new. He also has another 3Dr shell and interior and logbook for a Mexico he cut up for spares years ago ( he bought it with a twisted chassis and it was classed unrepairable, and the logbook is NEVER for sale) Four years ago dad was knocked off his motorbike and put in a coma. He suffered brain damage and sight loss so he will never get around to fixing the escorts. The belief that he will keeps him going tho. It's far too easy to say the owner is in the wrong or lazy to not fix them up without knowing the full reasons or story behind the car.

Near me is a Lotus Carlton, Audi Quattro, Mk1 Golf and a Calibra on a drive with a garage. Must be something special in garage to keep a Lotus Carlton out in the elements

My first 3 cars were Nova GTE's, despite paying 2700 as a 17 year old to insure a £600 car. I still have the 3rd Nova and it's currently 'resting' My dad and I did a front end rebuild and 20XE conversion about 10 years ago and since dad's accident, I have vowed to restore it to take my twin boys out in the car grandad built. Oh and I was born in 1986

Mahle filters are my first choice. Main supplier has changed to bosch filters now and the fit isn't as good. Seals feel too big and the cartridge filters don't clip into place as well

Goodwood FOS AND Silverstone classic always show some memorable cars. I remember my first Silverstone classic seeing a full grid of group c cars, actually racing too. What a noise

I remember being about 10 and going to Billing Aquadrome for the annual NSRA meet when my dad looked at a car and for once didn't tell me the year and model. I asked what the model T bucket before me was and he simply said, that's Andromeda, that's 1000bhp. 1000bhp! Compared to the Pops, A's, Chevy's etc I was used to this T created an impression. Since then there have been 3 cars that have had the same effect. One was Goodwood 2015. I was given last minute tickets and it blew my mind to see the 405 Ti16 as soon as I walked in. I remember being fascinated with Climb Dance since I found it on V Rally, and to see the car in person and better still driven in anger once again left an impression. Fast forward to goodwood 2017. Walked into the paddocks and saw the cars gathering to start the hillclimb. I caught a glimpse of a white car that looked familiar. It couldn't be. It was indeed the Audi Group S Prototype. I had read stories about this car but thought it was hidden away. Yet again I saw a mythical car being driven, and not slowly up the hill. The following weekend I was lucky enough to be lent a friend's genuine Chevette HS (there is a back story to come on this) for a local car show in Newport Pagnell. The show always promises a good turnout on the Tickford Stand but I saw a Mk3 Escort there that wasn't the usual line up. As I approached I noticed the arches, the bumpers. It's got to be a rep I thought. It wasn't. The only RS1700t was right there, with Ari Vatenens signature no less. I'm looking for stories of cars you never expected to see in real life
