Mmmm now that would be cool! But being realistic, it's gonna need a lotta work, and parts for the 4.5L v8 are fairly non-existent... not to mention pickup only from Belgium! Hopefully it can go to a good home, but sadly it wont be coming home with me. Not trying to be a pedant, but I believe it was the 2.5L Daimler V8 in the Glacier Grenade making 4 figure horse power! Not being a pedant; you are of course correct, on further investigation I found I'd followed an erroneous link to that conclusion, (now amended). I appreciate you're managing your project on a shoestring, learned skills and elbow grease - it's a compelling thread! OK, the engine looks as though it's been stood in someone's leaky shed for 20 or 30 years but it was tootling around in a hearse for decades before that so there's a chance it's barely run in. Parts: If / when the engine was worn you'd have to get white metal bearings made up but Yes, everything else would be virtually unobtainable and would require specialised manufacture. If anyone bought this engine unseen they would have to instruct an appropriate courier in the current climate. If the 2.5 litre hemi can be tuned up to 1,400bhp with a supercharger, I wonder what the 4.5 litre could be tuned to without??!

This is what you want, it's FREE go and get it, do it now! Yep, rse into gear time. You can insure it for a day to collect or pay to put it on a transporter without even going there. That means you keep your £1K to buy tools and parts.

Edward Turner & Dr John Tait's masterpiece, the Daimler 4½ litre V8 hemi. Belgian online auction. RARELY AVAILABLE! During development trials in the late '50s this engine topped 130mph at the MIRA track in a Mk X Jaguar. William Lyons suppressed the engine to a certain extent because it outperformed his XK straight 6. It was rated at 220bhp but, purportedly, this was as high as the Jaguar Works' dynamometer would go. In 1960 it could propel the 2-ton slab-fronted tank that was the Daimler Majestic Major from standstill to 60mph in under 10 seconds and top 120mph - that's 60 years ago! If you were an image conscious bowler-hatted gentleman in the '60s, this was the dragster to own. This engine was very highly thought of at the time, Lyons was worried it would put the XK6 in the shade, but due to the fact it was only ever used in this one staid luxury saloon (with limousine & hearse variations) production was poor with only 2,000 units produced over an 8 year run. Sleeper potential: With a bit of tinkering it fits in this replacing the 2½ litre V8; If you could mate an appropriate period gearbox with overdrive onto this V8 I reckon it would bring the 0-60 time down to about 7 seconds with a 140mph top end. One of these engines, attached to a Jaguar manual gearbox with overdrive, was advertised a couple of years ago in good order at £6½K. I feel this Belgian auction might be low-key enough for this lot to be largely overlooked. Currently no bids with 18 days remaining.

Looks ideal; running MOT'd and, looking at the MOT history, it probably needs various odds and ends sorted which gives you the chance to learn how to sort them. I've had one of these in a Diesel, it was a pretty decent little car, they do rust, (underbody corrosion noted on a previous MOT). Also the switches can be a bit naff, I was told they were Spanish made and it was a common problem. High miles for the little petrol engine but VW always made their engines very tight. It's very cheap. Worst case scenario - you need to break it. You'd get your money back and make a decent profit!

Just to complete the story for anyone who might look in the future, the Elswick Envoy sold at auction for £1000. Very happy with that given it ended up being a telephone auction during the current lockdown... Thanks for the update, that's a fair price considering what's going on with the world at the moment.

Welcome & happy first post! This is a Peugeot (type) 105, I would suggest that it would not be a suitable car for a novice and it's unlikely to fit in with your sub £1K budget; Peugeot 106 - Yes that's definitely along the lines of what you're looking for! Keep it basic, can you manage with 3 doors? What sort of mileage are you doing? The petrol version is a good city car if you're only doing sensible local mileage. If you're on the motorway every day with this little engine screaming, it's no longer going to be frugal. Diesel is good for higher miles, I had one as a courtesy car years ago and managed 65mpg on the motorway. Diesel engines can be very expensive to fix when major components need replacing or overhaul. The 106 isn't a limo; everything feels nasty, tinny, rattly and cheap - and that was when they were new! Studebaker Avanti (currently for sale in Kent at what seems a very reasonable £30K). Delivered new in 1963 to a member of the Foden Trucks dynasty. This fibreglass 4/5 seater coupé was an air-slicing 'bottom breather' grille-less design with front disc brakes. In stock form the 4.7 litre supercharged V8 propelled the car from standstill to 100mph in 12 seconds and it would go on to brush 180mph!! It broke 29 world records at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

I'd have to agree with the K11 Micra. . . . Generally, they're reliable and cheap for parts. Yes, you can pick them up for silly prices (I got the one below for £50), but if you want one as a decent daily, go for the top dollar and low mileage with piles of service history. You will get a better car in the long run this way, rather than something fit for the scrap heap a year later. I had a lot of friends who were mechanics years ago. All the young mechanics used to run around in these. They knew when they bought them that the mechanicals were robust & reliable so they wouldn't have to throw money at them in the same way that they'd have to if they bought something like a Fiesta.
