You've probably not missed out on much, most of us are continuing life as was, Metalface got married and has two kids, Orbital Keef runs a wedding car business, that sort of thing.
Bit of a shock last month when LtwtBigCheese announced his Mrs had died suddenly.
There's threats of organising a weekend get together for the 'old school' lot in a field somewhere, but it's not happened yet.
Anyways, back to the Land Rover.
It's been getting a bit hit and miss as to whether the starter would decide to work or not.
Initial diagnostics found the trip wire betwixt relay and starter motor was made up of 3 pieces and all crimped together with rather naff crimp terminals, one which earthed out and blew the fuse in the supply.
A new fuse and soldering the wire together into one piece sorted that out, and a few days of working again made me happy.
This came to a shuddering halt when I received a phone call from the Mrs telling me it wouldn't start.
Instructions carried out down the phone to hit it vigorously with a small hammer, followed by tripping it with a screwdriver after it became apparent the relay had burned out saw it running again, whilst a new relay saw it back to intermittent starting.
Finding this tedious (and having to park on hills to be able to bump start it) some money was spent on a new starter.
Being a 5 bearing engine with a 3 bolt starter, the new item was of the later type used on Tdi engines, asides being a good price, it's also smaller, and spins the engine faster. Win Win.
There it is, hiding away looking all innocent...

Bolts undone and it becomes apparent that someone designed it so it wouldn't come out...

Fortunately the nuts holding the downpipe on came undone without fuss, and the starter came out.

Old and new comparison...

If you're wondering about the turbo, it came off my mates C3. It expired in a spectacular fashion, and managed to snap the turbine spindle, seen here. It made a wonderfully awful noise when it fell apart.

Anyways, new starter bolted in...

As it now started on the button (and a lot better than with the old motor) I took it for a test run to give the hounds a run out.

For those interested, the Brown collie is Jack, the black and white one is his brother Patch who are both 13 and a half, whilst the other one is an 18 month old black lab/collie cross named Griffon -Griff for short- after the 37 litre Rolls Royce V12 aircraft engine... yes, really.

I also had a go at taking an arty picture or two.
