A Rover V8 with an auto in a hillman imp - what’s not to like. The sound and acceleration will be enough to supply huge smiles and euphoric laughter. You can’t explain to people who don’t understand, they’ll never get it. Can’t wait to see the progress details, congratulations on building your car, your way and not following all the other sheep

I want to use it for working in, making the inside of the garage bigger. I’m thinking of demolishing the wall that can be seen in the photo.

Well, can’t believe it’s been so long since I last posted. It’s taken me just over a year to get where I am now and think I have a long way to go yet, however, in the interest of making the most of what I have, I’ve decided to extend my garage. This itself presents a few problems to be overcome as well as providing a solution to a long term issue that I’ve had for a number of years. As can be seen ( hopefully) in the photo below, I have 2 or 3 foot of dead space down the side of my garage that can’t be seen from my house or garden, The ongoing problem is that passers by throw all kinds of rubbish in this dead space, so I need to find a way of stopping them. Extending the garage to fill the dead space would be the perfect solution, the problems it presents are, how to do it, what materials to use and personal finances. I was thinking there’s only three types of material to use, concrete, metal or wood. I’m not a brick layer and have no experience of working with cement, so for concrete I was thinking of used sections from a concrete prefabricated garage. Metal would be panels and supports from another garden shed again or using either a wooden shed or start from scratch and just buy the wood I need. The roof is also leaking at the moment, so it’d be easier to extend the garage before repairing / replacing the roof or so I thought. So I’m looking for advice as to what would work best, any ideas, suggestions or photos gratefully accepted......

Loving the garage, going back a couple of years for a moment, those concrete panels are extremely heavy as you said. I used four of them lying flat as a base to build my shed on, which also gave me the benefit of a couple extra inches in headroom when finished. Very interested in your jiggery pokery though, my garage roof leaks and instead of just fixing it ( which would obviously be far too easy ) I thought I’d take the opportunity to extend the garage and was totally lost as to how to do it. However, you’ve now given me a couple ideas to work with.

The new transmission filter arrived looking nice and clean, There’s just 3 screws that hold it in place, so after it was fixed in place, the freshly cleaned sump, now looking like this, Was bolted into place. The workshop manual states that the transmission sump bolts should be torqued up to 12 pounds per foot, having got it all back together and having removed 9.5 pints of transmission fluid before it all came apart. I added 9 pints of new fluid and left it overnight with a sheet of cardboard underneath to check for any leaks. The next day and there was no sign of any leaks, so, a fully charged battery was connected and when the ignition key was started, just a click from the starting solenoid. Spade connectors removed and terminals cleaned, they were reconnected and this time turning the key resulted in the engine turning over. A couple of attempts and the engine barked into life. After leaving it to tick over to let it warm up, checking the gearbox fluid showed it needed a little more fluid adding. After adding a quarter of a pint, removing the axle stands and putting the car back on its wheels, it was fired up again and this time there was no horrible clanking sound when a gear was selected, only had enough time to move it up and down the drive but it seemed to be running and stopping well. Just need to check the fluid level again and fill the fuel tank now. I’m booked in to a car show and town parade this Sunday, just a local event that’s about 20 minutes away from home so hopefully a nice little first drive since last year.

I really hope it does get better, while I have great friends on and offline, who have supported me and frequently checked to make sure I’m ok. I also see my step daughter ( who has her own family now ) every couple of days, while her mother is mostly ignoring her. My step son now lives with his mum, she took him with her and I don’t see him ( I suspect that’s more down to his mum though ). The hardest part for me is that I still don’t really know what happened or what went wrong, we never argued, shared the same interests and always enjoyed ourselves. It seems like she just suddenly decided she didn’t want me anymore, I’m totally lost without her and finding it hard to just carry on. It’s like one of those movies where someone gets removed from their normal life and placed in a completely different one, and expected to just get on with it

Sadly, it wasn’t sold. I would have loved to still have it, but when my wife left me she took it with her. However, I’ve still got my Charger. That sucks. Just read this week about a guy losing a truck to his wife. The only way I would find that “excusable” is if she were a full on petrol head and drive the wheels off it. Sadly, often they are spite or financial acquisitions I trust you are in a good place, despite all that She left a couple of weeks before Christmas, took the El Camino, our dog and left me with no money or job as I was her carer. Now though, I’m working again and have money in the bank. I’m getting there slowly and have plenty to keep me busy. Still find it hard coming back to an empty house that used to be full of life, not to mention waking up in an empty house as well. I’m led to believe that things will get easier though

I’m not really a fan of dating sites to be honest, mostly based on past experience with them. Think I’d prefer something to happen naturally if it’s going to happen at all, for now though, I need to sort my life and surroundings out. The hard parts done, I’m making money again so no need to worry where my next meals coming from, lol. My cars and house are the priority now, anything else can wait.
I know that sump bolts shouldn’t be too tight, 20 lbs ft sounds about right, I was planning on glueing the gasket to the sump indoors and leaving to go off overnight. That way I can clean the excess off before fitting it. If all goes according to plan the sump and filter should be fitted this weekend

Having siphoned 9.5 pints of transmission fluid from the gearbox, I got under the car to remove the transmission sump. It’s held on by 14 bolts all of which appeared to be slightly more than finger tight, not sure at the moment if this is correct or not, or maybe due to the vibration from the propshaft. I have a workshop manual though, so I’ll check the torque settings before replacing the sump. On the bright side, the sump is straight and level where it bolts to the gearbox and didn’t leak previously. This is what it looked like inside when I removed it, The propshaft went back into position easily, before removing it, I marked its position with tippex and asked the guys at CPS to make sure the marks where either left undisturbed or replaced for me so I could put back in the same position.as can be seen below, With the prop reinstalled and the sump cleaned as well as removing the old gasket from the mating faces, all I need to do now is change the filter in the gearbox, put the sump back on, fill with fluid and go for a test drive. This is what the old filter looks like in position,

The last time I drove the Charger, there was a vibration that appeared under acceleration and disappeared when braking. At the last MOT, I was advised of a little play in the U/Js on the propshaft at the axle side. It also didn’t seem to know what gear it was meant to be in, I’m hoping that it’s not a gearbox problem. Thinking it might be because of the propshaft vibration and might even be the gearbox fluid and filter just needing to be changed, especially as there’s a distinct possibility that it could be the original fluid and filter from 1968! So, last week I syphoned 9.5 pints of transmission from the gearbox through the filler tube, took the transmission sump off to clean and removed the propshaft. The propshaft was dropped off at CPS ( Commercial Propshaft Services ) on the Team Valley in Gateshead to have the U/Js at both ends replaced, while this was happening the transmission sump was cleaned and a new filter and sump gasket was ordered. The propshaft was collected last Friday and is ready to be fitted and the sump gasket and filter arrived today, ready to fit. With everything that’s been happening I didn’t get round to taking any photos of taking averything apart but, I’ll take some as it all goes back together, hopefully in the next couple of days or so

I’m back!
After almost two years since my last post, there’s been a whole host of changes to cope with and some personal problems to sort out. However, I’m trying to get back to normal. I no longer own my Chevrolet El Camino, the Land Rover is gone as well, so is one of my Toyota Hilux’s. I do still have the Charger, one Hilux Surf and an 1985 Chevrolet Camaro, not to mention my daily driver Mondeo.
The biggest change though, was my wife leaving me shortly before Christmas last year. It left me with no job ( I was her full time carer ), no money and the possibility of losing everything. Overnight, I went from having the perfect life and loving every minute of it, to having nothing. I did briefly toy with the idea of selling the Charger, it would have meant that I could have cleared my mortgage and live on the remaining money while looking for a job. For a short period of time, if someone had given me a big bag of cash, the Charger would be gone. After realising that if I did sell it, I’d never be able to replace it with another one, they’re just too much money to buy a nice one these days. I decided that I’d keep it and struggle to make ends meet somehow. I’m pleased to be able to say, I now have a job again and have been working since February, of course all the money I make is mine now, to spend as I see fit. It’s been ( and in some respects, still is ) a complete nightmare. I’ve had to extend my mortgage so that I can afford it, the job I have involves working late most nights and some weekends which means I have even less time to do what I need to do before I think of doing what I want to do. So, three of the cars have gone, I have an entire house to decorate, repair and furnish. My shed to finish, my garage roof to replace, a front and back garden to do something with ( I really don’t enjoy gardening at all ), and four cars to play with. With less free time available though everything is going to take longer than I’d like.
Anyhoo, with some support from some very good friends, things are looking better. I still can’t get used to being alone, hate waking up alone and really, really hate coming home to an empty house. Although there’s money in the bank now, food in the cupboards and as the weather is warmer and the nights are lighter, I can at least start trying to rebuild my life again.
There will be updates forthcoming on the cars and garage / shed though. Only today I picked up part of the Charger that’s had some work done to it - update to follow later.

Well, after nearly two years since my last post, due to some personal issues that I was forced to deal with, there’ll be no further posts on this thread
