Fitted the sump with a better condition baffle plate. But the plate just touches the crank so straightened out the original one and put that back in. Now to have a once over with the head. Clean the sh** off it and make sure the valves are all smooth and lovely. There was one valve which I thought was a bit sticky if I remember right. I wondered about a bit more porting on the valve throats but I think ive already smoothed out the rough bits and done a good bit of that. this plate has a scratch mark where the crank touched. It must be from a really early car possibly the 1100 GT berlina?? heres the plates side by side. Cast block on the top alloy crank case and alloy sump on the bottom.

I would personally say the honing is a bit flat and not at 45. (I will say also that my experience in engine building is a big fat None at all )...but the engine workshop said to me that the bores were "honed ready to build." So nmretro, have you used Hastings rings on your fulvia? Can you get those in the UK. As I found it hard to get any rings for the fulvia. Omicron in the UK is pretty much always the only people who seem to know anything about the cars. Mostly I get enthusiastic if the parts suppliers have actually even heard of a fulvia. I'm getting used to the emails and phone conversations that go ...Oh yes I think Ive heard of one of those but we don't list anything for them.. Then the conversation goes... OH weren't they those ones that rusted to bits Hahaha. Big silence from me then ...!! Well after fifty years every car from that time would have quite alot of rust most of them probably more than this one.
I installed the sump today with the strainer and a good baffle plate as the original one was a bit crappy. Also Ive been buying up engine bits that have been coming up on Ebay etc. I bought a bunch of 302 engine bits minus the crank. And another 140 head which needs a bit of work to sort out. So now ive got a huge selection of engine bits and could probably start a fulvia parts supply business. Hahaha. I took some bits to store in the garage and filled up a wheel barrow of just engine stuff and then went back to get the rest and filled up another barrow full. Then there were even some more. Gulp... Any one need some fulvia engine parts...Ive probably got something ??

Probably just the photo but something to keep in mind. Most ring manufacturers recommend 45 degrees on the crosshatch, yours looks much shallower. It's possible the vertical speed of the home was too slow. Too flat of an angle can cause excessive oil consumption. that picture was taken with a flash and looks much more sort of "scored" than it does in the flesh. To look at in daylight its almost totally smooth. don't know if thats good or not or if there are supposed to be obvious honing marks? Funnily enough someone else said that the guys who did the rebore left the bores too rough on his car. To me they are really smooth. This shot show a mirror shine in the bores. I thought they were scratched on the lower two bores but its a reflection. don't know whats best?

regapped rings after the first go were too tight this is the oil ring no. 2 cylinder before... almost no gap at all !!! thats much more smooth and no wonder they were so hard to put in.

piston rings now in. (lower oil scraper rings ) My homemade installer was a bit too fiddly and ended up mostly just using fingers. (With gloves this time). The new rings were a bit more springy and a touch wider diameter than the ones that were on the pistons originally. They are definetly the right ones as they fit perfectly. ....just looking at these pictures ive noticed both the two front cylinder walls looka bit scratched. Will have to investgate that carefully. Didnt notice while doing them HHHMMMM.

The block looks like two thirds of a VW VR6 block, I wonder if the VR6 was inspired by the Lancia lump? Was interesting to note the early VR6 12v was SOHC with 1-cam per 'bank' until the redesign to the Lancia style DOHC (but 24v) in 2000. The first V4 was a made by Lancia and it was a SOHC in 1922 in the Lambda. They have been doing the V4 thing a long time. The fulvia was double cams. The smallest was a Ardea 900cc and made about 28 Hp and the biggest was a 2.5 V4 in the Lambda. The fulvia was the most powerful though. Lanci did also make the first V6 engine in the 50's in the Aurelia. the B24 convertible such a great looking car. Then the B20 had the V6 too... how cool is that. Broke the oil ring while fitting the pistons. Something thats easy to do as Ive found out. Ping-ed across the worshop and cut my finger at the same time. The V engine of the fulvia makes the rings at an angle down the bore. So a normal piston ring tool cannot work. So ive made one. So although this picture makes the whole thing look curse word, that is actually how they go in. So its really easy to catch the rings on the lip of the block. A few more pics. this is the piston minus the lower oil ring. So i made this And it works !!!!. The circlip tightens and the angled aluminium sheet holds the clip into the groove and then a gentle push and the piston goes down inside without catching the rings on the edge. To be honest its still pretty fiddly but luckily Omicron (Lancia parts) has been able to get me another set for me. Think I will replace all of the rings with brand new.

Have you checked with clubs if repair sections are available? yep there are none for that area. I can get a whole rear panel but not the bits that the rear panel attaches to.

It would make a neat little engine for a conversion into a RWD car. Could be mounted back quite far in the bay for great weight distribution. Hmmmmmmm..... this is something I found on the net. I think I saw this in the flesh at a Lancia track day and didnt pay that much attention to it .I didnt realise that it was a fulvia engine and box in a mid engine with fiberglass body. All hand built . It was REALLY fast if I remember right. Could have been ten years ago?

why build a normal engine when you can go full lancia? HAhaha Well exactly. I'm sure in the days when Lancia were 3 times world rally champions I bet the design engineers said that to themselves every day !!!! Theyve been making incredible cars for a very long time the first V4 engine in 1920's they made a flat boxer engine in 1960 and also the first V6 too in the 50's Such a shame that they spent SOOOO much money on being innovative that they lost money on every Fulvia they built. Then after realising that the company went cap in had to Fiat who said Now then lets see if we can save some money on those rally cars. The build quality when down the material were sourced cheap ( especially the cheap steel )and then they were totally Foooked Lancia is the most successful rally car maker ever ... with more rally racing success than anyone. Fulvia HF, Stratos HF, Montecarlo 037, Delta Integrale are some of the greatest rally cars ever and you cant even buy an actual Lancia any more, just a re-badged totally mind crushingly boring Chrysler. Sorry went into a bit of a rant there I will calm down.

Those pieces can be made from flat sheet without a shrinker. Search 'bedford' in the readers rides section. The roof gutter pieces I made are pretty similar to those and I made them with a vice, a hammer and a bit of pipe. just had a look at that. Fantastic work ,Right I'm going to have a go. Very inspirational....exactly why Ive posted about the work on the fulvia to get some MOTIVATION. Cheers big smile on my face.

so err, it has steel bore liners, or are the bottom of the bores really knife edged ? the block is cast with no liners and yes they are really knife edge. heres the top of the block with the pistons still in and the silver round each cylinder bore is the head gasket. heres the block and the head with pistons. (not mine one from the net)

Ive a few more engine questions! whats the layout? I don't get how the 4 cylinders all connect to one crank. Is that block alloy? If so, surely the pistons don't run in alloy? Is that a crack in the last pic, bottom right? Edit, just saw your post in tech, its a V4. I couldnt tell from the pics. Also, iron block so thay clears that up too Yes its quite unusual a narrow V4 with a single head. An alloy crank case and sump. Cast block and double overhead cams in an alloy head. Theres a single inlet and single exhaust manifold. A pair of twin choke carbs so a choke per carb. The whole thing is tilted over on one side to get under the low bonnet. The Lancia engine hertitage comes from unusual engineering but really high end for its day. The race/rally versions were considered fairly powerful to have got 150HP ish from a 1600cc. This if the fulvia engine still in the subframe but out of the car.
