From this rusty nasty mess To this.... nowhere near perfect but ALOT better. Alittle touch of filler and some rust eater inside the boot and a smear of seam sealer on the boot line.

Got the shocks off for new bushes. Cant afford to replace the shocks too but they could do with replacing. New dunlop wheel cylinders on the way (from a Jag mk2. 1 1/2 inch.) stabiliser rod bushes replaced. Which was a bit head wrecking. The bolts came out fine and I thought it would be an easy job. The bushes wouldnt budge. After the gas torch plenty of persuasion with bigger and bigger tools I had to cut them inhalf with a hacksaw then in half again as they still wouldnt come out. Then the new ones had to have the treatment with a bit of threaded rod and big washers.... wined them in and then wished I had a proper engineering press. But I don't, so had to improvise and got it done in the end. The rear anti roll bar bushes have been replaced fairly recently so they had a bit of a clean up and were OK. I busted the bolt on one of the shocks and was able to order some high tensile bolts. The internet is fantastic for stuff like that. Its not something you can get up the road. But easy to order off the net and OK they were a quid each but £5.50 for 5 minimum order and they will arrive in 2 days . I also ordered some UNF 1/4 inch bolts for the caliper to cylinder bolts and £3 for a whole pack of 20 delivered and arrived in one day. Love the internet for that. New polyurethane bushes for the shocks on the way. Got the lights working properly although the "flasher" in the middle of the steering wheel has a short somewhere and will not work. The dip to full is working fine so good enough until I have rebuild the steering box at some time in the future.

Hello. I'm Justin (Fulvia1436). I'm developing my 68 Fulvia Coupé, basically to keep it running roadworthy, quick, and fun. The car's are fun to drive, by nature, and my aim is to increase that factor by improving the performance. You'll find some more info on the car, posted by my friend, Lukestew, on here. He's rebuilding a 1200 Fulvia Coupé, and is progressing well. Look forward to showing the car at Goodwood, on April 1st. Hello Justin thought that might be you. cheers L

1400 certainly interesting, shame even the 1300 starting point is rare here & doesn't sound too easy to fit into early 1200 given the floor/firewall revisions to fit the 5-speed box.? Yes these cars are getting quite rare now. And the mods are not necessarily for the purist. They are quite radical and some people in the past have even been quite rude about it to him. Everything is stuff that the Lancia race engineers could have done to the Fulvia. They were looking into an injection fulvia in the 70's before they concentrated their efforts into the Stratos (even the very first Stratos's had a fulvia engine.) I personally think its totally great that the car is being used and not kept in a heated garage, only coming out to show off at car shows. He uses the car all the time and has ground up rebuilt it (to my knowledge) three times over. He has had the car for many years and from the days when people would almost throw away Lancias. Times have certainly changed with peoples views on old Lancias. theres quite alot of great info about these two guys injection fulvias at Pauls blog. var1016.blogspot.com Sadly Pauls car nolonger exsits but Justins is alive and kicking. Justins car is 1436cc with Kügelfischer mechanical injection from a BMW 2002tii. The engine block was bored to fit the larger high compression pistons. The bottom end was strengthened and so gives 120bhp @7200rpm on the dyno. About 95 HP at the wheels (more than a series 2 1600 HF which is about 82) Hot camshafts. Big valves. Gasflowed head Bespoke design tubular exhaust manifold with collectors. 11.5:1 compression. HF spec modified suspension. Electronic ignition (123 Ignition) Lightweight battery High capacity alternator plus lots of others including an auxiliary rad and fan under the wing.

Not to take anything away from your build but is there any more info out there on your friends car? This ^.... I too would love to know more. It looks like a period mechanical inection setup with a slide throttle? Is it home made? As for filters... I had a RYCO brand one which has certainly done well at saving my pumps etc. After 5 years of use and me not checking it it had become very clogged (See my Viva thread) and I'd hate to see what that stuff would have done to my pumps. I though you guys would be interested in that car. I'll just ask if he is ok about it. The filter did do its job but there was still a bunch of crud that was in the carbs and the little filter thats on the inlet to the carbs.

heres the first start of the fulvia sounding a bit like a tractor with no air filter and half an exhaust. So next is a bit of exhaust work and then a good tune up.

that will be why the engine wouldnt run for more than a few seconds then die. This was in the filter. The carbs and fuel pump were full of rusty brown stuff and even the filter to the carbs had some in. I thought the fuel filters were supposed to stop the crud getting in. thanks to Justin and Paul who came to give me some professional advice about the car. They came in Justins fantastic fuel injected fulvia. now thats a serious motor... More grunt than the 1600 HF Fanalone and its a 1400cc So with their huge fulvia experience they pointed me towards fuel starvation for the poor running. I also learnt that the are a couple of the head bolts that are crucial to the head being properly located to the block and also for the gasket to be properly aligned. So I found that I had missed them and used the normal size ones. the pair on the left are the locator bolts and go on the top right and bottom left corners of the head. The one on the right of these three is a normal bolt. They only get torqued down to 25ft lbs but because there are so many (15 of them, i think ) thats all they need. So the two bolts in the corners were whipped out and the rest were undone and all carefully re done with the torque wrench. so after all the fuel side of things was cleaned out and a new in line filter fitted. I turned the engine over just to make sure all was OK and it fired up almost straight away. now to look at the exhaust.

Congratulations! When you get it running again it's best to break it in with a high idle (2000 rpm) for about 20 minutes. You should not allow the engine to idle. Okydoky. Will do that sounds good. Its being a bit temperamental, the carbs are playing up so it wont run for long without the choke on. Still a good few coughs and splutters when I try to use the throttle. Hopefully I will get some time on it tomorrow and will clean out the carbs and filters and set the valve gaps , timing with a strobe and set the dwell angle on the points etc. Then I'm sure it will run properly enough to play with the carb mixtures and air flow. Though to be fair the exhaust is hugely loud and I need to try and get some sort of silencer on it. Its going to really upset the neighbours if I carry on as it is

IT ONLY BLOODY WELL RUNS...... I set the engine up with oil and water and charged battery. Turned over fine with no horrible noises... Spark at the plugs and fuel in the carbs. So I tried to start it proper but nothing but popping and coughing through the carbs. then banging through the exhaust. So timing was out as the fuel was igniting when the valves were open sometimes through the inlets then through the exhausts. Took the valve cover off again and then after alot of head scratching realised that because the crank goes round twice to one rotation of the cams it had to be 180 out or the ignition was 180 out. So yet again went through the cam timing and saw that the distributor was pointing to the wrong sparkplug. TAH DAH. reset yet again and first time SHE LIVES . Maniac laughter in a doctor Frankenstein kind of way. So it ran finally and SOUNDS LIKE AN ABSOLUTE BEAST. ive only got half the exhaust on and no airfilters. it wouldnt idle very well and cut out when I used the throttle but it runs. Oh and the head lights flash when I turn the steering wheel but so happy now.

I did not realise this was front wheel drive! It has the same strange setup as the audi stuff? Great work (& Alfa Sud & Citroen 2CV & GS, Subaru, Ford Taunus FWD) Unlike Audi they all wanted to avoid engine weight hanging Waaay out front & avoided the in-line 4. Thanks Davey, and cheers Cord I'm going to have a look at the Taunus think they did a V engine?? Most of the cars Ive owned were front wheel drive and were a bit like this. I didnt realise it was that unusual. first car was a Peugeot 104 (front wheel drive engine on a slant to wards the back.) A Wolseley 1300 GT (front wheel drive transverse engine with gearbox almost on the bottom mini style ) The fulvia's V4 engine is also slanted over to the right as you look at it from the front so they could save a bit more room ? or get it under the bonnet ? The hugely long gearbox thats behind must balance some of the the weight over the wheels ? the whole thing on its subframe tips to the front when its out of the car but it not hugely weighty on the front. I recon Lancia must have scratched heads quite a bit to design it. The subframe is great as its not actually that difficult to take the whole lot out (quicker if you remember to take the brake hoses off !!!!) I would say that if I need to get to the engine or gear box for any major work I would maybe now take the subframe out off the body and not the gear box or engine on its own.

Lucky it's such a light car without the subframe and engine! Yep that's very true , me and the missus can lift the front up to put some chocks under.

The brake hoses are shot, they leak like a sieve. Well when you hang the whole engine and subframe off them by mistake they get a bit stretched and it doesnt do them much good..... Doh ..Time to look at the steering instead.

Well quite alots been going on. painted the engine bay and also painted some underseal on everything thats hidden by subframe or engine bits. installed the engine into the subframe after painting the difficult to get to bits of the subframe. installed the new exhaust manifold and downpipes. where the car is theres a bit of a slope into the garage. Which is kind of OK when you jack the rear up as it comes to a good level for working on but getting the car back in is a pain in the A. So I thought I would fix a ring eye to the concrete post at the back of the garage and it would be then easy to winch the car back up the slope when I was working on my own. Simple. So I had to get the car back in the garage as I could then winch up the body over the subframe. I had to take the wheels off the subframe to make it low enough that the body would clear it without bashing the ceiling of the garage. Its only a small council kind of one with not alot of space. It was all going great until the ring eye pinged out of the wall and the car was then able to freewheel off down the slope careering towards my neighbours car and the other garages. So on my own somehow I slowed the car by grabbing on the lorry straps and managed to stop it. But now shaking with the effort I had to get from the front of the car to the window and lean in and grab the handbrake before it smashed into my neighbours car. I jammed my foot as a wedge under the front wheels of the wooden dolly that was holding the front of the body. Shaking with the effort and adrenalin rush I did stop it but it was F close. Didnt use that method again !!!! I waited until my friendly neighbours could push it in with me...PHEW. the next day I got it over the subframe and after a good bit of wiggling and swearing its all in and tightened up. sorry this is a blurry shot. Have a huge list of stuff to reconnect. I think the brake hoses (especially on the drivers side) will have to be replaced as they got really stretched when I took the subframe out. Ive replaced one of the brake pipes that got a bit squished somewhere along the way. So its the sh** job of bleeding the fulvia brakes which is not a simple thing. The system is a dunlop dual circuit on my car that only really bleeds properly if you pump the peddle. Ive tried a pressurised gizmo both sucking and pushing .....just takes a whole load of peddle and lots of fluid. I'm waiting on my newly painted valve cover to put on the engine to finish that bit off. Then its the rear suspension bushes.... well loads still to do but I'm getting nearer all the time. Well happy today and the suns out too.!!!
