I would give my right arm for another E28 - either in 520 or 525e flavour. for me, the most usable classic car out there. Timeless looks, reasonable performance and good parts availability. I so so want another but I fear I could not afford another :-( You're quite right, providing you get a relatively solid one and maintain them well they'll go on forever.

I'd love to put a Volvo 2.3 t5 engine and gearbox into the front of a mk3 Escort, maybe even run the R awd system.

That's a tidy van. Cosworth body kit, slammed, tailgate conversion and painted in Porsche riviera blue would get my vote (loved the 90's)
I would change the timing belt and tensioner as a matter of urgency, if not done already. The tensioner is made of cheese and collapses thus throwing the belt off! It happened twice on my mk1 mondeo derv but I got off lightly, could of been a lot worse if traveling at speed. And I'd recommend doing it every 30k.
Good luck with the project.

With a heavy heart I'm putting up for sale my 1986 BMW e28 520i automatic finished in malachite green with matching green cloth interior. The car has covered 143k but runs and drives very well and smooth. The engine doesn't use oil or have any leaks and overall mechanics are in good order. Bodywork is in good condition and presentable but by no means perfect. There are the odd small rust spots here and there and some very minor dents. There is not structural rot and the rear subframe mounts are spotless with no signs of rust. I have done the following in my ownership. Poly bush rear subframe Front lower suspension arms All fluids changed Bilstein shocks X4 Ebach springs X4 30mm Exhaust system Plugs Leads Dizzy cap Air filter Repaired nearside jacking points and front wing Repaired battery tray Long MOT with no advisories Only selling due to change of circumstances and I know I will regret it. £4500ono 07849 968 723 James Ipswich, Suffolk

Thanks for replay chaps.
I forgot to say I've got a squeaky wallet and would prefer not to pay that sort of money. Something like £12 for 4 metres would be better. There are plenty on eBay (Ford, Jaguar, Austin etc) but nothing really suitable for my BMW. The base of the trim which tucks into the rubber is approximately 14mm and the top/visible part of the trim is approximately 12mm. Just after something universal that'll do the job.
Thanks.

I'd forgotten all about these. I can remember the bad press they got when new for "looking too American" but I must admit they've aged very well. That's a nice example you have.
