There's actually a trike law in Germany where you can convert a normal car to trike with speed limiting so as to allow younger drivers to drive a year earlier than with a 'normal' car. I've seen pix of Polos, Fiat Cinqs, Ibizas, 'Zuki Alto - that sort of thing... That's insane, especially coming form the normally sensible Germans.... make a car more dangerous, then give it to a young, inexperienced driver ?

That's quite interesting for only a few years difference and otherwise A.N.Other small old car. Trying to find that info is a pain in the ***** as you have to get quotes for every option. But a saving of a grand on insurance is massive and would probably be a deal breaker for most people, unless you know that there are choices that are so much cheaper BTW your son has good taste The quotes made very little sense. I was using comparison sites (which is a risky strategy, but most specialist companies don't want new drivers if it's their only car) but what was obvious is that assuming anything with a small engine would be cheap(ish) is wrong. Get a quote before you buy! This. The problem is small, cheap to buy/run cars will be bought by young drivers and crashed, so the risk (in the insurance companies eyes) goes up for small cars. Something bigger or leftfield may be a better bet insurance wise. K10/K11 Micras were good a few years back, not sure now.......

On a side note, has anyone tried those battery rejuvenating pellets to any success?

If you don't want to use it yourself I'd do a few jobs on it and sell it on, there aren't many on the roads any more. Would be a shame to break it unless there's something major / terminal wrong with it. I.... ^^^ This. Clean, polish, put the stearing wheel back, see how it looks. Don't break it.

Is there any Vauxhall that doesn't rot around the rear arches? Had a Mk1 Cav (hence followed the rebuild) while a mate had a Mk2 SRi. Heaven knows how he insured it

I'm near certain I seen this a few weeks ago just outside Tullamore, I think on the Athlone side of Tullamore? Its at LeCarow. Between Athlone and Knockcrockery. In that case, is the Bagnal Fireless still there in Leicester? (sorry, google maps pic)

Mondeos are a good shout as they are within the money but it would have to be a petrol for me, unless you get one for £1k and are OK to bin it if it goes bang. Golfs IME are too pricey for a Mk5 in good tidy condition, and Saabs do now have scarce parts. If you crash some of them and the parts go, you are looking at a write-off. Saabs are no worse for parts than any similar aged vehicle. The companys demise has impacted values though, making them performance bargains. Mondeo TD? Will probably cost as much as it's worth to replace fuel injectors before too long. A workmate had 4 spares cars at one time......

Helpful words all around, and I have a question....
I was looking at a bike recently, where the dutch owner had ridden over, and then had the clutch fail in the UK. Selling cheap as the cost of repair here or repatriation were more than it was worth. How would this stand as an 'import date' bearing in mind it wasn't initially bought here to be sold?

... In my experience NCB is wiped totally after 2 years if it's not used (I've never heard of it being reduced every "lapsed" year as mentioned above, but maybe the rules have changed ) The context was two freinds getting married, and moving in together. Had a car each but were going down to 1. Was told to alternate between main and named drivers each year to keep NCB live should they need a second car in the future. This was about 10 years back mind.....
