Mine was pretty good, 528 manual, but so competent and modern that it's a long way from classic status. It's predecessor, the E34, can still be had for peanauts and that's considerable more charming. I followed mine with an E46, 330ci, which some rave about but I founds to be really very dull. Too modern. Each to their own, though!

I am slightly obsessed with these. The Renault and/or IKA Torino. I wrote a little feature about the best classic car you can never have - www.motorpunk.co.uk/fleet/9641/

I like Japanese cassette manufacturer brands.
This may not be true.

How about anything for about 4k and then a shed-load of nitrous? By eliminating any kind of progressive controller, just a button for giggles, it'll feel even scarier! Have you been stalking me? Meet the GassyAlfa - GTV V6 with NoS. About to appear in print and on film. Up to 350bhp if you're brave...

These are 20-30 years off being considered a classic. Consider that it's grandfather, the 205, is only now slowly being appreciated - and the cool old 205 has pretty Pininfarina styling, lovely handling characteristics and are simple and relatively (rust aside) robust. The 207, frankly, has nothing going for it at all. Sorry.
(I had a 207 Gti new, given to me for a few weeks. It went wrong an awful lot)

It's really hard to see beyond a Volvo. Made in Belgium, lots in Holland for sale, 960 estate, V90, 850 estate, V70, they all have a huge, square loadbay but don't drive like vans and are tough and reliable. I wouldn't trust a cheap 90's French anything, your trip won't be much fun waiting for the breakdown truck. Traffic and parking in the Netherlands is heavy, maybe you know that, but public transport is pretty good. I still have burns from a Renault Scenic I owned once. 'orrible things. Volvo! Bon voyage

Have a bump on me. This car looks great, had we managed a viewing earlier I'm sure it would now be mine, instead of this GTV V6. Good luck.

Revival. Le Man classic might be good.
I'm not much of a car show fan, too much shuffling around in crowds looking at stuff I've seen before.
Not a show, as such, but I really like the look of that historic motorsport gig in Malta that was posted on here.

Never mind the car, that's just metal, look at the sorry state of that miserable house.

Something a bit different, and (in my humble opinion) a smidgen cooler* than any BMW, Skoda or Honda mentioned - Volvo V70 T5 Wagon? Lots of potential with these, I've had two and they were brilliant things. *I listen to African Jazz, wear tweed, have a stupid moustache and ride dilapidated bicycles for fun, therefore your definition of cool may differ to mine. Did I buy my W124 off you? He was scarily similar sounding. He did have a beard and long white hair however. Nope, no beard or white hair here.

I had one of those as a daily driver for a few years, same colour and wheels, manual. I don't miss it. It was OK, but really rather dull. Positives were 231bhp and decent fuel economy (30av MPG over 2 years of driving incl some trackdays) and pretty reliable. But LOADS of them haven't been well looked after and when selling I got an endless stream of brainless 'innit bruv' types. I part ex'd it against a nice old Porsche, now that I do miss!
