Sorry for the modern content, but this the only car forum I frequent that might know Does anyone have any experience with the Pug 207 RC? I am considering one as a fun replacement for my rather overly sensible electric Golf 174BHP in such a small car should be fun

Much better looking than the mini that has the same engine. Small French warm/hot hatches will always have a cult following.

they're cheap now, but plagues by electrical issues, timing chain problems, turbos.etc.

The turbo is an easy DIY job though, I did one on my mates R56 MCS this year, didn't take half as long as BMW wanted to rape him for.

My next door neighbour has one of these.... I’m not convinced.
Plus the other day, he removed the key, and it was still running

Any decent english spoken forums for these somewhere? And who are the best specialists for these?
Turbo failures are 'fine' slightly more worried about timing chains and electrical issues 🤔

Electrical issues that blight the pugs are usually caused by their canbus system being useless. Timing chains issues are cured with a new tensioner.

It's a PSA designed engine, built by both BMW and PSA.

basic architecture is related to the aluminium tu engine, bmw involvement introduced chain drive (to its detriment, early iterations on the 207 had countless revisions and recalls from slipping timing breaking tensioner guides etc)
its called a prince engine, ep6 is the peugeot basic code, various iterations from a 125 bhp na to the most recent 265 ish bhp rczR and 308 (highest bhp/litre production car engine to date i believe)
they do tune very well, fair bit of tuning about for them.

These are 20-30 years off being considered a classic. Consider that it's grandfather, the 205, is only now slowly being appreciated - and the cool old 205 has pretty Pininfarina styling, lovely handling characteristics and are simple and relatively (rust aside) robust. The 207, frankly, has nothing going for it at all. Sorry.
(I had a 207 Gti new, given to me for a few weeks. It went wrong an awful lot)

much like the mk4 golf, they got a bit stiffer than the old ones, but also too fat.
unfortunately unlike the golf they only had a 1.6 175 ps engine, nothing mad like an r32.
208 is a much better car, 2 or 3 generations of engine and control systems further on, a much stiffer shell again, but 200 odd kilos lighter.

Hate to agree with Jermey Clarkson but when it comes to modern Peugeot/Citroen... He's not wrong.

Maybe in two or three decades. Earlier 206 GTI 180 has higher odds of appreciation, as only around 2500 were sold in the UK. I've just sold mine for a fortune more than I paid for it. The lad (Who runs the 206.info forum) who bought it was keen to keep and use occasionally for its possible future appreciation, along with it being an excellent example with low miles. But as above, 205 GTI's are only now starting to fetch 'proper' money, so your going to be well out of luck with a 207 surely!? Heres my little beaut, just sold (the seats, along with the reasonable - in modern'ish stardards - lightweight'ness made for an amusing little car) I found to be rather under rated to be fair...

I daily drive a r56 cooper s with the same engine and it is a hoot to drive, no idea on the quality of finish on the peugeot but the engines are alright with a little love.
Tensioner is a 15 minute job and genuine ones are cheap and solve any rattles. The injectors are quite loud and it is normal for them to sound a little diesely. They use oil quite heavily with 1 litre per 1000 miles being acceptable so a sooty exhaust and oil use is quite normal, the bores oval out wuite quickly.
Mine is on near on 100k and runs perfectly everyday.
My suggestion would be a get the cooper s if you can afford one, ignore the hairdresser image they seem to have, they drive like a go cart and go like well lubricated droppings. the interior is different to every other modern on the road unlike the peugeot and the parts backing is huge, aftermarket and dealer you can essentially build a whole new car in bits. modifying is cheap full stainless exhausts can be had for £250 and there is whole heap of cooper works stuff.
They drink reasonably heavily for a 1.6 mine averages 28mpg, if i really try it will do nearly 40 on a run at 65ish.
They pop and bang on over run and sound with a decent intake the turbo noise is very addictive.
Got to be honest, although the engine has its flaws i do love it.

keen to keep and use occasionally for its possible future appreciation I don't get this mentality. To coin a phrase I've heard elsewhere, it's like not having sex with your missus to save her for the next bloke.

keen to keep and use occasionally for its possible future appreciation I don't get this mentality. To coin a phrase I've heard elsewhere, it's like not having sex with your missus to save her for the next bloke. Except you don't make love to a car . I don't get it but when you have little in the way of assets (property etc.) and are on a modest income these "little" things soon matter. It's part of the reason I've stored my M3 and am dalying the W124. That and I may convince myself not to sell the M3 this way ; mileage really harms their values (I saw people paying £15k for a low mileage car with no real issues tackled vs. £6.5k for a 150k car but it looked mint and had new suspension and all of the problem areas taken care of. Unfortunately the latter car is no more ; it was worth more in spares (£3k for just the engine for example). I had the very same problem with my 944 Turbo. Despite it being practically rebuilt mine got shunned with laughable offers (£4k back in 2014 for those wondering) when people bought cars with half of the miles for twice what I was asking, only to fix all of the issues mine had fixed or permanently eradicated ; mine was an ex-specialist's director's car and you could tell. So yes, it is sad but I do get it. Yes we could get something more sensible but then we may as well be on the moneysavingsupermarket forum. And who wants that? . Back on topic, The P/W ratio is similar to a GTi-6 I'd say. They made 167BHP on a good day and weighed 1215kg. IMHO the cars to watch are the Clio 1*2s, especially the Cups and the Trophies ; the latter have already started rising in price for original examples and seem to be a future classic in the making. There goes my chances of getting one for now! Or the Focus ST ; Hotwire and I were saying that we are surprised (but not as well) as to how pricey a good one still is! But then a Volvo 5-pot, sweet manual 'box, space & practicality and fun are a hard combo to match and it is leagues ahead of the ST170 it replaced. I'd still have expected them to have fallen to £2k now, not £6k for what is now a 10+ year old car
