The list to buy this will be far too long for me to add my name to (as much I would love to).
That sadness aside, this has been a fascinating thread of determination and tinkering. Whoever does end up with this better look after it. I'd keep it forever. But then, I'm a sucker for a saloon, especially an E38, which is peak BMW.
Good luck with the sale. If you want to pointlessly add my name to the list, feel free!

Cleaned the engine today, which is putting the cart before the horse in terms of what needs to be done. But sod it, I like cleaning things. Plus, it's a nice thing to work on now. Hopefully going to service it over the coming days, but that'll be it. MOT then. Only once it's been through the hands of the tester will I know whether or not it's worth going further with it. Fingers crossed it is. I've done a systems check, and everything seems to work. There aren't any massive holes in it. A cursory looks at the steering and suspension caused no concern, and with the service done it's got the best chance ref emissions. We'll have to wait and see though. Before. After. Chris

Not done much (read: anything) with it this week due to time/short daylight ours. That'll change over Christmas though. Planning to start with a full interior deep clean and then do the engine bay. Not that either are big priorities, but they are quick wins, which my head needs right now, as low on motivation. Then the mechanical stuff can begin. Oh, and I took some of the stickers off it. Man, the paint is baaaaaad. Chris

Am I right in thinking that this is essentially the same underneath as a Pug 306, and thus equally good to drive? I've owned a lot of cars, but this is only my third French one, as such I'm not all that clued up (yet). However, yes, I think you're right. And from what I've heard, it should be a riot to drive - even has passive rear wheel steering, apparently. I hope it's good to drive. That'd be a wonderful pay off. Long way to go first though! Chris

It has arrived, so I done made a video.
It's actually not too bad at all. Looks horrific, mind. But I'll get to that. The main thing I need to sort is the alarm, which is still being a right scamp.

Word up. So, got a new car joining the fleet on Saturday. And ooooooh, she's a beauty. A 1996 Citroën ZX Volcane. But not the good Volcane, because this is the 123bhp 2.0 eight-valve one. But hey, it was free, so I'm not going to complain. Free cars, no matter their condition, are the best cars. As you can see, it looks... interesting. The story is thus. It was bought by a Twitter fwend and used on a banger rally, hence the 'exciting' paint job. The black paint is, I am assured, knackered anyway. It did the rally (to Nice, I believe) and then drove back to the UK, at which point it was parked in a lock-up and it's been there ever since. About four years in total. Remarkably, the MOT history isn't anything too terrifying. It still starts with a jump, there is no corrosion to speak of and as such, I think it's worth saving. I think there's a nice narrative about a banger rally car being 'restored'. As normally they just go in the bin. The Volcane, 2.0 or not, is a rare beast these days, so it's worth trying to revive it. It gets delivered on Saturday. So the plan is to give it a good inspection and make sure it's actually worth trying to do something with. I'm quietly confident it is, though. Subject to that being successful, full service, new rubber and then get it in for an MOT. I have limited space here, so the sooner I can get it road legal, the better. Once that's sorted (and this is all HIGHLY speculative at this stage) I'll paint it black again (though I have no indoor space, so will need to find somewhere to do that - I can prep and primer at home, but applying gloss black outside is a no no), clean it up, paint the fogs yellow because that's the law, and then maybe do some sort of road trip in it. I've always liked the look of these, so I'm hoping it can indeed be saved. Time, as ever, will tell. Chris

Jim, just wanted to drop in and say your old exhaust is finally fitted. Went with the bigger backbox in the end. Fitted a treat and sounds lovely. Chris

I love those shots. He's got a real eye for it. What lighting kit was he using, as the light distribution looks so soft and clean. I had a go with my mate's Volvo 480. Never tried light painting before, so there was a lot of trial and error. Nowhere near as good as your man with the Beetle, mind. Chris

Man alive, that is some impressive work, Jim. I'm loving seeing this come together. The quality of the paintwork is excellent, too. I think my 800 will definitely be going to Mike when the time comes.
I have to ask, the stainless coolant lines - how expensive is expensive, and do you know if it's possible to get more? I need that for mine.

Incredible work as ever, your attention to detail is awe inspiring. We'll have to sort a feature out when the car is back up together. Incidentally, the exhaust I bought off you is finally going on mine this week, along with a new timing belt, water pump, manifold gasket and cam seals. Oh, and the chap is going to sort the drive issue, as I think it's spat a shaft out - we'll see. Long story about that can be found here. I think I'm going to go for the smaller backbox, not the Mongoose one. Though if it's too loud, I'll stick the Mongoose on. Keep up the great work. Chris

Obligatory throwing in of my own car... Getting thin on the ground now, but the enthusiast market is picking up and prices are starting to turn, but only slightly. The Vitesse Sport and Sterling are the rarest, especially in Coupe form. Nobody wanted them for such a long time, and now we're into (allegedly) fewer than five hundred left. Chris

Love a retro stereo! Top threadage. The above is mine. Wanted something period aftermarket in the '90s W124. Scored this CD Kenwood Mask for £15. However, the plug on the back for a multichanger instead goes to a Chinese Bluetooth thing off the internet, so now AUX is Bluetooth from my phone. Well modern. All in, £25. Happy with that. Chris

What an emotional roller coaster. Sorry it ended the way it did, man.
But here's to the next automotive adventure. And remember, it's better to have loved...
