Morning all, my brother is looking for someone to do some welding and paintwork on his 106 Rallye. Has anyone had any good experiences with body shops in the West Yorks area with this kind of thing? Want to avoid bodgers but not necessarily looking for a concours approach. Thanks

That master cylinder conversion does look really good, I think its a worth while modification and of course it saves on the cost of refurbishing the original master cylinder and servo. The other item that needs to be altered in addition to the wiper motor is the battery location. I'm not sure what i'm going to do with this yet but i'm leaning towards putting it under the front wheel arch on top of the front crossmember. The other possibility is the boot but i'm not as keen on that. I found painting this time was a bit easier and the only cheat I had was that I borrowed a really good spraygun from a friend who paints cars professionaly. Where I have gone wrong with painting before is not being patient enough waiting between coats and also trying to cover everything with one coat. This time I have painted everything and only got runs in the petrol flap and scuttle vent panels. If you are doing a metallic colour my friend who lent me the spray gun said you should paint the panels in the orientation they will be mounted on the car, i.e. doors should be vertical and bonnets should be horizontal, he said with some colours it doesn't matter but as a matter of good practice he recommended it and it seems to have worked well on my car. Its a bit dry in a few places and will need to be flatted and mopped but overall i'm really chuffed with it. I remember a friend of a friend a few years ago spent a lot of money on his Beetle and had it painted metallic green. The doors must have been painted flat and it was really obvious.

It was a kind of medium blue. 1.3 engine, I think. just checking as i bought one in the exact circumstances of your anecdote, just wanted to check it WASNT me (it was white) I would have preferred if it had gone to an enthusiast but I don't think it did.

I did wonder how much these things are worth these days. The reason being that I still feel bad about my wife's Grandad's Cavalier. He bought it brand new (C reg I think). Always garaged, polished every Sunday, ultra low miles. When he died about 10 years ago there just didn't seem to be a market for them and I think someone just bought it as a cheap run around. It seemed like such a shame after it was cared for so well. What colour was it? It was a kind of medium blue. 1.3 engine, I think.

Hello Wayne, it was really good to hear from you the other day. Always fascinating to find out about the history of these old vehicles.

You can really see where the Ka and Focus styling came from with that GT90.

That looks lovely. Now, don't get me wrong, I've always had Beetles for the last 25 years and I've modified every single one of them but yours looks fantastic stock - I wouldn't touch it!
Must be getting old....

I've been saying this for a while, even before Corona virus but it might be a longer term decline. I think it is a combination of older enthusiasts dying off, environmental concerns/fuel cost/availability but mainly that younger people just aren't all that interested in old cars.

I haven't had time to look at the mower as working on the house has taken up all my time for the last couple of years. However, with the house nearly done and spring approaching I thought I would drag it out of my Dad's barn and have a look at it. I managed to get hold of a replacement steering mechanism and once I ground off the welded on bodges it went back together fairly easily. This meant that I could take it for a spin round the garden. It now steers as it should but the transmission is quite jerky. Not sure if it might be the drive belt or something more serious. The engine also cuts out from time to time but I think this might be some kind of fuel system issue.

Have you considered a child safety gate meant for stairs? Some of them have an opening section.

This is a great thread, but I'm lost. I know nothing about the Aircooled VW scene, so is there any chance you could put a few words with your pictures to say why you think each car is iconic. Please. Most of these cars are from the late 80s/early 90s and were part of the 'New Wave' VW scene of that time. The emphasis was on style and creativity, rather than money (and quality of execution in some cases). It was quite a small scene and most of the participants were pretty young. There was a big social/show scene that went along with it so a lot of people have fond memories of the time.

These are all excellent, I'm sure I'll be bugging (no pun) Stu and the B289 crew with questions. What has there been in the scene from the last ten years or so that have been winning/firing up the imagination? In the last 10 years? Not so much, I would say. The quality has undoubtedly improved but everyone seems to play it safe with the creativity side, possibly connected to the value of the cars these days. I think there is also something about the fact that you only very rarely saw the earlier cars at shows or the odd magazine feature that seemed to add to the mystique. Having said that, there are still some epic cars being put together (I couldn't tell you the owners' names tough!)

If it is mainly about cost, a caravan wins every time. I'm a motorhome fan though.

Always a big fan of Alan Smart's oval.. Slightly less famous but still pretty iconic, I think. I was actually the custodian of this car for a while. In fact, here it is in my garage...

Thanks Chris, don't worry about it. I have agreed to cancel the sale and look for one a bit closer to home. Thanks again and keep up the resto threads - one of my favourite things to read on here. Stewart

I absolutely love this in its current form but even more in the original style. When I was a teenager it was a close thing between a mini truck and a Cal look beetle. At the time a mini truck seemed too expensive so I went with the bug.

I don't suppose you could squeeze in a go kart chassis coming north, by any chance?
