Ok so which manufacturers are the most guilty of raiding there back catalogue to try and flog nostalgia? Here’s three from me Beetle GSR Inspiration I would think from the Beetle GT The obvious one from Fiat with the 500 range I like them both to be honest And then there was the Jag S Type, must have seemed like a good idea at the time and they sold well. So what others have we got? The Rover 75 always seems to hark back to the P6 to me, and what about the Ford Mustang? There must be design influences in most models nowadays I would think so what else have we got?

Here’s three from me Beetle GSR Inspiration I would think from the Beetle GT Sorry, but that is just some generic VW 1200, not a GSR (= Gelb-Schwarzer Renner = yellow-black racer?). GSR were always late super beetles (1303S) with McPherson struts and curved wind screens. Like this:

Lots of manufacturers are quite strong on line progression within models. VW stuff is quite noticeable, they actually made a big thing of it with their golf adverts over the years. I always like this one though- There’s obviously styling cues that carry over.

Fiat 500 does it for me the others don't really work. Think the 500 would stand by itself without being a 'throw back'

Ok so which manufacturers are the most guilty of raiding there back catalogue to try and flog nostalgia? There are a few that work, but in 99% of cases it's just laziness on the part of the manufacturer, in the same way that 'rebooting' films just demonstrates a total lack of original ideas and an utter contempt for the customer. In most cases the 'new' car looks like some sort of hideous caricature (Camaro, I'm looking at you) with a bloated design due to modern regulations and absolutely none of the charm of the earlier car it's failing, dismally, to emulate. Nostalgia, it's not what it used to be.

Of course some might think that it’s manufacturers trying to cash in on that nostalgia....... Sceptical? Me???

Well it saves the company from actually having to think too hard. The common thread on all these cars is that the original er... originated from the engineering team while the redo comes directly to you from central marketing. In each original cars case the design comes straight from creative and often inspired solutions to specific needs from the car (peoples car, cheap to repair, fits five etc etc etc) whereas the modern follow up owes every single nut and bolt to "How can we trade on the originals er... originality.
That's not to say that the new versions cannot be good cars. Nearly every modern IS an objectively good car. It's just that the initial creative input, the design flair etc is where the character comes from.
You can't make that magic in marketing.

The new R/T copies the old one even down to the bonnet scoops. Either Challenger would do for me tbh

I was just thinking, there’s a comparison with the MGB roadster and the MGRV8, at least they were the same production run( basically) but the ‘new’ old models do look a bit like the ‘old’ old models on steroids Sorry no pics, like I’ve said before I’m curse word at links!

Fiat 500 does it for me the others don't really work. Think the 500 would stand by itself without being a 'throw back' I think the same about the MINI (bini?) It may be a fine car, but mini it is not! Rover designed the first Mini however . Rover also had the 1-Series drawing on the table, called the R30 IIRC. It was meant to take over both the 200 and the 400 ; It's not like both cars were rivalling each other or were very different under the skin either. But it's not like Rover did this alot either throughout the years. It's rumoured Rover even did the Mini SUV first which became the E83 X3. But if we've shown anything, Rover would never have capitalised on both the way BMW did, or make a success of it. You only need to look at JLR, which in theory is partially the legacy of BL (Solihull and Gaydon are now used) >> Austin Rover >> MG Rover Group >> Splintering >> JLR continuing at a number of the old sites, with even many Rover and Land Rover people of the yesteryear still being part of it. I do like the R53, but it would have to be a Cooper S for me ; if it showed anything, it showed that having a small car didn't mean you had to lack safety equipment or live with a biscuit tray for trim finish. Finding a good one these days is hard however in the MCS. I doubt they'll get any cheaper, given what's happening slowly to the Clio 172/182 prices.

Were they the same shell? I always thought they were. They were a heavily modified shell. The rear IIRC was 4 linked with coil springs vs the MGB's leaf spring setup and the front crossmember was balljointed and possibly more different to account for handling characteristics. Think of it as a slightly more major transition from the Porsche 944 to the 968 or the BMW E36 to the E46.

But British Leyland were showing pics of a mini ‘successor ‘ for years, and at one point IIRC the metro was billed as the replacement?? This group had a history of infighting, and even produced cars which were in direct competition with each other! You are probably right about the Rover designs ChasR, but wasn’t that at the time that BMW owned Rover anyway? My memory of that history is befuddled (read pickled in real ale!) It was only Land Rover that kept the whole shebang going for years anyway!🙁 The p38 Range Rover is an X5 in a party frock anyway, apart from the fact that the X5 would get stuck in a puddle / oooh controversy 😳
