Good point about the driver weight! It often amused me to be told about the latest whizzo weight reduction or BHP increase by a fellow competitor, with a huge beer belly!

It was good to be back at Quorn with Boscastle! And our Windcutter wagons were pulled by a nice variety of locomotives.

I have done a similar amount of cutting in the gearbox/back of engine area and it is still a strong car. The full roll cage really helps to keep it all rigid. My front windscreen hoop was braced firmly up to the scuttle by the door opening. My car has a Rover V8 plus Rover 4 speed gearbox and a Ford Anglia van axle.

Excellent! 115 dB at 20,000 rpm - Way to Go!! Phil, the pedant in me must gently correct you to 115 dB at 46,000 rpm Pedant away.....Very happy to be corrected. I had guessed at the 20K, having initially thought of 25K, but didn't want to guess too high. I knew there was a 6:1 reduction so conservatively went for 3.3K input to transmission.....Silly me, 46 /6 equals 6.6K so much more Frankenhealey speed!!

On my last visit we took off the two side doors so that we can replace the corroded hinge angle section. I was also told that my brakevan was outside at Rothley and had a leaky roof, so I scampered up on top to paint some brown bitumastic over the weather (west) half of the roof. It then started to rain and I ran out of bitcho!

Hi PHUQ I think 92212 was running with a photo charter around 1995/6. However I have just seen pictures of 92214 and it has been repainted in unlined black just in time for the Winter Gala so hopefully it will be pulling our "lengthy train" of Windcutter wagons. Also "Boscastle" is being moved...To Quorn where it arrived from Barry 50 years ago on Jan 22 1973. It will be good to see it back there, but this time without its boiler.

Hi Engineer I thought that the 2600 was just a stretched Nord engine, but, in fact it had all sorts of detail changes such as valve stem diameters being larger (Sodium filled I was told!) so it needed different (Expensive) shims to the 4 cyl engines. The sound with six straight open headers......

I had Sud just like that! The Muscle Sprout Comp Altered drag racer also had an Alfa engine... a straight six DOHC, triple 40 DCOE Weber carbed 2.6 litre. That sounded glorious when revved to 7K.

Great news from the GCR
"92214 to remain at the Great Central Railway!
We’re delighted to announce the successful outcome of negotiations enabling prized loco no 92214 to remain at its Great Central Railway home.
In mid-2022, the loco’s owner, indicated a wish to secure its longer term future. As a result, negotiations began with a view to 92214 staying at GCR. Chairman Richard Patching comments: “Negotiations can’t always be rapid and maintaining confidentiality for everyone is paramount; nevertheless, the discussions proved to be positive and cordial throughout, leading to a most successful outcome for all parties. Patience pays off and I’m sure all GCR supporters will welcome the result.”
The owner felt an important factor was that 92214 should remain at GCR where it will be well looked after and continue to play its part as a true main line loco on a double track railway.
The loco is an ex British Railways 9F 2-10-0 tender loco – a type designed in the 1950s specifically for hauling heavy freight trains, but also often used on passenger trains. Locos of this class were employed extensively on GCR until the mid-1960s which coincided with the line’s rundown/ closure by British Railways.
The acquisition has been achieved by the GCR’s supporting charity David Clarke Railway Trust becoming its owner, and financed with the help of a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous".
