We had this problem with ours too, cut a long story short it was a tiny split in one of the vacuum lines. Anyway, this was the cure in the interim and may apply to you too... MkI throttle body resetPS: Where are the vacuum pipes that I should check for splits? Been a couple of years now but it was one of the smaller diameter ones (5mm?), rhs of the engine as you look to the rear of the car. The car was very random in its "meltdowns", I'm putting that down to slight movement in the hose as the split was right on the connector nipple on the underside of the hose, out of sight. Bummer about your clutch, I hope it is a quick fix!

On a couple of occasions I felt a slight hesitation (I wouldn't call it a misfire, it wasn't anywhere near serious enough) whilst gently pulling away in first or second gears. We had this problem with ours too, cut a long story short it was a tiny split in one of the vacuum lines. Anyway, this was the cure in the interim and may apply to you too... MkI throttle body reset

Mouse! That's a rat!
My wife had a TT like this for a couple of years, loved it. I did most of the servicing at home. Had the same dipstick tube issue, needless to say, go for the OEM replacement as the aftermarket ones from you know where are not good quality at all!

If you have the luxury of a hoist or high ramps - try from underneath next time.

Personally I would replace the lot including all hoses that look old. These are nice engines and in most cases will give you more enjoyment on the road than in the workshop.

Just out of morbid curiosity - US or Imperial gallons?

One trick is to solder on a small plastic battery holder and route the wires and holder outside of the speedo cluster. Eliminates leaking onto the board and you don't have to take the cluster apart to change them.

Can you hire a petrol-powered mulcher for a day? Byproduct is good to spread around trees and shrubs. Only downside is the blackbirds have an absolute ball scattering it around again!

"The drivers door lock is winging its way from Latvia"
Lot's of good quality parts available from that part of the globe, avoid re-manufactured rubber and plastic items from the Asian regions as I've found the fit quality to be poor and the rubber stinks!
As for the poor idle, needless to say there are two main avenues here, either one or both can cause issues; electrical and air. Airways, (pipes, hoses etc.) can be really problematic, particularly in a car of these years. I suggest you take off every hose and boot and inspect thoroughly for splits or holes in the first instance as this can be a quick fix.
Back to the rust, did you pop off the plastic grills by the windscreen wipers and have a look down each side of the cavity? Evidence of rust here usually manifests itself as wet carpets, I recommend you pull the carpet out anyway and clean it as per my thread, give you a chance to give the internals of the body shell a really good once-over.
Keep up the good work!

Something else to consider... E30 seat coversAs for rust, a frequent soapbox of mine is to check the sunroof drains and the underside of the sunroof itself, also pull the tail lights out and check the openings in the rear panel. There are a number of things you can do to an E30 that is subtle but effective, check out my 5th E30... E30 refreshYou have a great car there - all the best for the build.

Well! That certainly took off predictably! The reality is, there are a lot of variations of pronunciation up and down our small strip of land, from the cringe-worthy to the almost "BBC English"; same across the ditch of course. Regional variations of accent are prevalent too, any mainlanders on this forum will know what I mean. Some time back I was travelling in the USA and on more than one occasion I was asked if I was Australian, whereupon with barely suppressed indignation I would reply, "no - New Zealand. You Canadians always get it wrong.". Thus far I have been lucky with non-adverse reactions! Anyway, enough of sociolinguistics from me, must be time for yoeddynz to come back with more entertainment in the engineering department?

All it needs is twin overhead foxtails and chrome plated grease nipples. 🙂 At PandaSelecta : The penny has just dropped - you are from Newcastle in the UK? My comment above could be somewhat displaced then! Apologies in advance.
