ok, you've taken the literal scientific definition and applied it correctly. when .gov say "monocoque" do you think they have entered two paragraphs for the maclaren F1 and single seater race car owners. or do you think (like everyone else) they mean unitary construction/ unibody ? It's quite clear what they mean, but if these rules are to be enforced they should use the correct terms and wording. As it stands using the term "monocouqe", you would need to have the vehicle tested after any welding repairs, or outer panel replacement. Until they can be bothered to word these rules properly, you can't loose 5 points for modifying the shell.

The sump plug will be tight as it's a steel bolt into a alloy pan, use a 1/2" socket on a breaker bar and it will crack loose.
The fuel filter should have a nut built into one end of the fuel filter that you can hold with a large spanner, then simply undo the banjo fittings either end.

so, devils advocate. how do all the mk1 and mk2 escorts get away with 5 linking. The same way everyone else does, most car body shells are NOT of monocoque construction, they are a unibody. Therefore as long as you are not altering a structural part of the shell in such a way as to weaken it, you can carry out such alterations.

I'm fitting a towbar to the BMW e39 touring. The one I've bought comes with a towing interface, however I don't really know the best way to wire it in. The instructions are generic and don't give specific vehicle info. Is there some sort of plug on the e39 loom to plug in a towing interface (even an OE one)? Or do I have to somehow splice each wire that goes to the lights (seems like bodgery to me!). The e39 has a Light Control Module so the circuits aren't fused in the regular way, and this LCM can get fussy and bring up bulb failure warnings if things are messed about with. Every thread I've found on the internet seems to end with "take it to a towbar installer". Any help much appreciated! I'm guessing by "towing interface" you mean bypass relay? These are very easy to wire up, just a fused live and earth from the battery, and a feed from each light. They don't draw power from the lighting circuits so the lcm will be happy.

This might seem like a silly question, but what exactly are you trying to do?
Whatever chassis you choose will need mods to mounts, outriggers, ect. Is the bedford chassis beyond repair or are you trying to build something special? Also modding a chassis doesn't instantly mean a Q plate.

I've seen one on a v8 r129 snap the end off the normal type compressors, it came back out of the wheel arch like a shot from a gun!

Steer well clear of a concrete garage, as said before they condensate like mad.
I think I would be looking at a steel frame, then build the rest in wood. And always go for a pitched roof.

I used to work next to a garage, and once heard two of the mechanics discussing a job: 'How bad is it?' 'It's f'ing f'd.' 'Completely?' 'Oh yeah, totally f'ing f'd. I dunno how, but the f'ing f'er's abso-f'ing-lutely f'ing f'd it.' I must admit that when I'm covering the HGV workshop that's how most conversations go, we do like to thoroughly discuss technical matters.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Went out to see how I could wire the flap shut and noticed it has a bit of play in the same plane which it opens/shuts. It feels like its not under enough tension from the rod to hold it tight, I checked with a different turbo and it was solid so I think I need to adjust the rod. Havent taken the rod off the flap yet to check the movement but I cant open the flap by hand with it attached. Hopefully the rod is too long causing the flap to be slack and letting exhaust fumes out, thus having a slow spool and low boost... That sounds like you've found the problem, a non sealing wastegate. Fixing that will help a faster spool time but at some point you may want to try a smaller turbo, a t3 sounds like overkill for an engine that size.

Hi all,
Having recently fitted a taxi spec centre console in the turbodiesel, the old plain black one is up for grabs. It's in great condition with no rips or damage, and is hard to find in this colour.
Looking for £80 collected from Buckinghamshire.

Best to use a w124 as the donor car, the wiring is much more swap happy in those.

TBH if your thinking of going EFI you may as well just swap in an engine that has it already, an M111 conversion could be done fairly quickly. You could go bigger but then it gets expensive. To rebuild the engine you have isnt that cheap when you compare it with other options. Good to hear from you Simon. Cheers Jhon. New year, new projects.
