Hi,
ive got a w115. its had a full respray and the interior is tan leather. its looks the part but the engine is smokey. blue smoke and it never clears up. had a compression test done and cylinder 3 is down. engine in a 2.2 m115 with a stromberg carb .
I'm looking for recommendations.
1) rebuild the engine, top or bottom end, depending on whats the issue and the carburettor. so remains original.
2) swap engine with a m110 or a om616 as its non to minimal wiring involved.
3) or go for a m103/m104. get a donor car and transfer everything over from the donor car.
thanks in advance

OM605? OM606? Take your pick and install it.

how easy is it to install an om605/om606. does the gearbox tunnel on the car need modifying? and how easy is the wiring?

I'd say there's a massive difference between a rebuild of what's there, and an engine conversion project. It also depends if you want a restored classic car or a modified one. OM606 won't go in without work to the front subframe and tunnel. Wiring is pretty easy if you go for the mechanical pump which most people do when converting. Be prepared to spend three times what you bought the engine for on the pump though, they ain't cheap I've found. M110 and OM616 should be a bolt-in job as they came in the later W114 / W115. Your car will have the bulkhead struts which will need to be removed for the straight six - the W114s had a bulkhead in thicker steel to compensate apparently. I've seen the struts get re-instated after the engine's in with bolts rather than welds which makes for a tidy job. Or they get left off... I'm not sure how critical they are really but you have to imagine that Mercedes put them there for a reason. M103/4 isn't a straight swap but it has been done before. Not sure what is involved with this conversion in terms of chassis mods and electronics. The engine world is your oyster, it just depends how big a project you want!

I'm getting pushed towards the om606 swap. i can get a e300 for £400, body is rusty but i just need the running gear. any one know roughly how much it would cost to do the swap? or if someone can do it for me. obviously will pay for it

If you're not capable or willing to do the spanner time yourself the cost will be exorbitant for a swap tbh.

Either rebuild the engine and keep the car original or modify it and put in a big horsepower petrol straight six (more than a M103 or 4 offers). The former should be easier and cheaper, plus you'll end up a really nice classic that will always be worth a few bob and easily saleable. The latter will be loads of fun, more costly, time consuming and not to mention you'll need a suitable transmission/diff, brakes and suspension etc.
Rebuilding the 2.2 gets my vote. Then again it's not my car nor have you mentioned your budget. Regardless, keep the thread up dated.

Rebuilding the current engine is defiantly better in the long run. It’s just the carb issue that’s not reliable and then changing to a Weber carb costs a fair bit too Or to a fuel injection engine.
My budget is 2k max

My budget is 2k max 2k? Well, if you're doing the work yourself consider stripping the current engine, see what needs doing and go from there. Then when you know where you stand on the engine, also speak to some carb specialists. Armed with all that info you can make a decision. Any photos of the car?

The Stromberg carb should perform well if it's rebuilt properly. It's a nice simple design similar to the SU, I'm quite a fan even though people like to bad-mouth them. Mercedes wouldn't have bothered with them if they were unreliable.
If you're going to get someone to rebuild the engine (and I think that's a very good option) just choose carefully when it comes to where you get the work done. I've recently seen a pretty awful engine "rebuild" done by a so-called Mercedes specialist which has resulted in a case at the small claims court.

Strombergs aren't too bad. That said, getting decent spares for them is harder, even with people like Burlen around. Stag owners find them OK however. Just how expensive is a Weber conversion? It will still be cheaper than an OM606 and paying someone to sort it out for you with change to spare . Alot of good advice on this thread. I also echo BenzBoy 's point about doing your research ; I was saying this at work today too with a few fitters. Despite what magazines and a number of members say, finding decent specialists, indies and mechanics is not easy, even for simple stuff!

The problem with trying to convert the M115 to injection is the head has siamesed inlet ports, which doesn't really lend itself to multi-point injection. In my opinion a well set up Stromberg carb'd engine will run just as well as a home-brewed fuel injection conversion and would arguably be more reliable depending on how well the EFI conversion is done. There's a guy in the 'States who did a single point injection conversion with Megasquirt here: www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes/238292-m115-t-b-i-conversion.html, but to me it just seems like a whole lot of work for not much gain, and a ton of potential failure points. A well set up 175 CD carb would be far less of a headache and would give thousands of reliable miles. But if you have your heart set on fuel injection, and want to do it for the challenge, then go for it! Let's face it, not many of us take the easy or most well-trodden path with our cars, otherwise it would be boring!

That's a good call going Efi imo. I can't help you with the Megasquirt as I've never fitted it but many have with plenty of success and there's a dedicated site for it too.http://www.megasquirtuk.co.uk/ & www.extraefi.co.uk/I'm sure somebody, if not many on here have used it and will assist you. P.s Just saw Benzboy's post. He's talking a lot of sense.

TBH if your thinking of going EFI you may as well just swap in an engine that has it already, an M111 conversion could be done fairly quickly. You could go bigger but then it gets expensive.
To rebuild the engine you have isnt that cheap when you compare it with other options.
