Well rolling road day 2 is done, and it's generally good news. 171bhp and 182lbft torque. Not bad, but had hoped for 180bhp if I'm honest. Still a couple of issues, the main one being that it starts misfiring above 6000rpm. We tried a few things but couldn't find anything obvious. We think it might be an issue with the aftermarket dizzy, but definitely something that needs looking into. Dave at the Mek Motorsport also thought we might be able to get a bit further with a touch more cam timing, but given how much of a pain it is to reset that can wait till we get triple carbs. The other issue was it started to get a bit leaner up the too, seems to be running out of fueling ability. So bigger carb needle valve ordered and probably need a slightly higher flow rate pump as well. But again probably not much power in it, just something that could be better. However, I'm going to call it a success as I've got the same amount of power as a Pinto that would have cost the same or more to build, but with way more torque. In fact I've been looking into it and I've got more torque than a BDG engine (175lbft, and like £20k!) And only a couple of counts less than a Warrior pinto (185lbft, and what £10-15k). So all in its a cheap way to get that much torque from a Euro spec Ford engine of the 70's. And hopefully with the triple carb setup I'm planning on later, we should be able to get to 185-190bhp, for a good amount less cash than a pinto can.

We even have rate options 😀 Not quite, they were more than I thought worth it, since have some in a box somewhere anyway! Might be a bit high in rate, but sure it'll be fine!

So might have got these too cheap to say no to - nice and short too so we can go as low as the chassis rails allow

A) Bookmarked. B) Dunno why, but it's crying out for twin rear wheels. Gotta get the power down! Ok so I love the twin wheel idea way too much!

I see a wheel hiding in one pic. Will they be the rears? Very cool project. Sadly they're the wrong PCD, but we will be using the tires on some Weller's. Just need to pull our fingers out and get the brakes sorted then we won't actually be that far off making it a driver. Oh and if anyone has some 13x8 ford fit rims we're interested!

Since you can't have a build thread without photos, here's some of the HEAP so far; Alex not sure if this was a good idea at all Starting the teardown Crappy old Pinto waiting to be pulled Roll cage pulled - its way too high up, but given the power this thing will have it's going to need something to help us avoid killing the groom before the big day! Chopping the screen out - we're going for a kind of roadster look with this (you know where that idea's come from!) - Pulling the seized pinto out - there is a new engine in, but that's going to stay a secret. But lets just say this thing is going to have around 300bhp/ton - it's going to be 'interesting' to drive! Chopping the interior about and prepping to put in some low mounted seats Don't cut the red wire..... yeh the wiring has been a challenge! Hanging off the back end, for some reason (sure there was a good reason) Making the new tank - yep not just for show Yeh, needs more lows - like 10" at the rear! We'll be filling the arches out with some 13x10 wheels and old hillclimb wets, so should look like it means business. Knocked up a gearbox mount for the new powertrain - not my best work, but it'll do As the front stands, for now - things are going to get rather more 'motorsport' by the time we're done At this point we'll probably start using the thread to discuss plans amongst ourselves, feel free to join in, though don't be offended if we completely ignore all rhyme or reason (we already have to get this far!)

Sometimes daft ideas go beyond the alcohol fueled drawing board (lovely Pub in Leamington the Drawing Board, good range of whisky and gin) and become alcohol fueled reality,
This is one of those realities....
Let me take you back to the start, my best mate Alex, AKA alex1380, is getting married and asked me to be his best man. This is an honor for me (and probably a huge error for him) and of course has lead to me being the one to 'organise' the stag do. But what to do?
This is where alcohol becomes involved and the idea for a Top Gear/Road Kill/Pimp My Ride-esque challenge appears
"Wouldn't it be great if we all built a crazy car?!"
"Yeh and we could do it the day before RRG and do a reveal at the show and see if we could run it up the hill!"
Who could say no to such a good idea? After all, as a bunch of friends most of us are very hands on and work in the Auto industry, I mean how could we fail?
All we needed was a car, and it should be a surprise for Alex. The daft sod then left the final choice of car in my hands - another error of judgement it seems!
At this point the stag group (minus Alex of course) spent a few weeks pinging car listings and ideas between ourselves -
"What about a time attack style Figaro?!" (a personal favorite idea of mine)
"This Uno track car is cheap, that'll be a great base!"
"How about a chassis cab with a V8 bolted in the back direct to the axle?"
Yeh, you can imagine the range of ideas that we threw around.
Then, one night on Facebook marketplace a truly terrible kit car turned up, could it be perfect? Que viewing a car in the snow and dark in mid March at Bruntingthorpe Airfield with a bloke we'd just picked up from the pub - certainly one of the more unusual car viewing's I've done.
What do you say having dragged a guy out of the pub at 8pm on a Sunday evening to show you his car - well if you're me you say "I'll have it"
I'm sorry Alex I really am!
But why would it be perfect, I mean we needed something with an MOT that didn't need much work and this thing, well it hadn't seen the road in years. However, it'd had three things going for it
1) Being a kit car it meant it'd be very easy to mod to something a bit different
2) It's Ford based (Mk4 Cortina) so nice simple, plentiful and cheap parts
3) Alex has a love of terrible kit cars... Some say he was dropped on his head a child and this resulted in him having a love of terrible steel and fibreglass mash-ups, as well as questionable taste in friends, poor guy.
4) (insert Spanish Inquisition style repeat here) It had the chance to look a bit like "That Land Rover"'s Yank cousin who was far too into the F&F franchise.
There are about 100 reasons it's not perfect for what we need - the seized engine and brakes for two, but that's just details. Instead, let's get on to what RR peeps really care about - photos, plans and idea discussion, well actually a video of revieling it to Alex and the first day we've had on the car to try give ourselves a chance of making it to RRG;

Well I had a few issues, eventually found that the air flow across the rad was very odd - was drawing air in as much from back of rad next to fan as it was from the front. So basically there wasn't enough cool air flowing over the rad to cool it sufficiently. After a lot of thought decided it needed a bigger level of modification to get it working meaning I've moved the whole rad pack forward enough to get a proper cowl on, and success, it finally cools the engine! Now to get everything else sorted for Shelsley and get back to the rolling road.

Excellent to see another hillclimb car on here, you're doing it right! Whens it due back together and where are you competing next? Coming to Gurston 16th/17th June? Booked in for Shesley at end of the July, fingers crossed it's work ok by then!

Before you do anything get your tune right as this is probably the issue... ...they had finally got the engine tune right and it instantly knocked 10degC off the top hose temp. It's a good point. If you did a pie chart of where all the heat goes as a byproduct of combustion, up to a third goes out the exhaust... Haha, excellent point! As usual I'm probably doing too many things in one step, but we'll, in for a penny in for (many) pounds!

Has the inlet manifold been ported because a single IDF 40 (32) should flow enough to feed 200BHP in that configuration. It has, I think the timing was the big issue really. The 40 probably would have just about managed but chatting to a few people and doing a couple of calcs I think 36 chokes are needed, hence saying to hell with it and going to a 44 - basically I've thrown some money at the problem due to not having the time to keep going back and forth to the rolling road.
