Sometimes daft ideas go beyond the alcohol fueled drawing board (lovely Pub in Leamington the Drawing Board, good range of whisky and gin) and become alcohol fueled reality,
This is one of those realities....
Let me take you back to the start, my best mate Alex, AKA alex1380, is getting married and asked me to be his best man. This is an honor for me (and probably a huge error for him) and of course has lead to me being the one to 'organise' the stag do. But what to do?
This is where alcohol becomes involved and the idea for a Top Gear/Road Kill/Pimp My Ride-esque challenge appears
"Wouldn't it be great if we all built a crazy car?!"
"Yeh and we could do it the day before RRG and do a reveal at the show and see if we could run it up the hill!"
Who could say no to such a good idea? After all, as a bunch of friends most of us are very hands on and work in the Auto industry, I mean how could we fail?
All we needed was a car, and it should be a surprise for Alex. The daft sod then left the final choice of car in my hands - another error of judgement it seems!
At this point the stag group (minus Alex of course) spent a few weeks pinging car listings and ideas between ourselves -
"What about a time attack style Figaro?!" (a personal favorite idea of mine)
"This Uno track car is cheap, that'll be a great base!"
"How about a chassis cab with a V8 bolted in the back direct to the axle?"
Yeh, you can imagine the range of ideas that we threw around.
Then, one night on Facebook marketplace a truly terrible kit car turned up, could it be perfect? Que viewing a car in the snow and dark in mid March at Bruntingthorpe Airfield with a bloke we'd just picked up from the pub - certainly one of the more unusual car viewing's I've done.
What do you say having dragged a guy out of the pub at 8pm on a Sunday evening to show you his car - well if you're me you say "I'll have it"
I'm sorry Alex I really am!
But why would it be perfect, I mean we needed something with an MOT that didn't need much work and this thing, well it hadn't seen the road in years. However, it'd had three things going for it
1) Being a kit car it meant it'd be very easy to mod to something a bit different
2) It's Ford based (Mk4 Cortina) so nice simple, plentiful and cheap parts
3) Alex has a love of terrible kit cars... Some say he was dropped on his head a child and this resulted in him having a love of terrible steel and fibreglass mash-ups, as well as questionable taste in friends, poor guy.
4) (insert Spanish Inquisition style repeat here) It had the chance to look a bit like "That Land Rover"'s Yank cousin who was far too into the F&F franchise.
There are about 100 reasons it's not perfect for what we need - the seized engine and brakes for two, but that's just details. Instead, let's get on to what RR peeps really care about - photos, plans and idea discussion, well actually a video of revieling it to Alex and the first day we've had on the car to try give ourselves a chance of making it to RRG;
