To go properly left field, here's the car that was owned and raced by some family friends back in the 90's and even into the noughties I think. Tony Sugden was the driver, and a top bloke - they were an unstoppable team for a good while. We used to go watch (and I'd "help out") quite a bit, especially at Cadwell. I blame the lot of them and this crazy thing for getting me hooked on cars, especially fast ones. FYI it's Costworth Turbo powered and I think the only original part that linked it to what it was based on was the wind screen (something to do with them being cheap and the silhouette regs?) I can still picture the noise as it jumped over the Mountain at Cadwell, and the endless spitting of flames. Can anyone guess what it's based on?

One week there's a ton of updates and then nothing! Well stuff has been happening, but mostly boring wiring. Fitted in a high level brake light, got most of the speaker wiring done including getting wires to the doors, properly - which is why it took a while... And the central locking stuff is finally totally finished, and seems to work pretty well. So now I'm turning my attention to getting the rest of the body built back up, first up are the wings the other side is still to do. Took me ages as well, but guess that's fibreglass wings for you. Plus I might have spent ages getting the shut lines the best I could Quite happy with that. Also tried the wheels we're going with at the front end as I hadn't seen if they'd fill the arches yet! Thankfully, they do. Just got to decide what tyre size to run now, oh and paint them a proper gloss black. That's all for now.

Spotted in Leamington over the weekend, not normally a fan of big wheels and skinny tyres on these, but really like this

Love the look of this thing, been hoping for years someone would do a decent job of getting 70's blocky design into a modern design (with all the pedestrian impact requirements it's no easy task!) Just hope they get something vaguely similar into production one day

Well another day and a little more progress. Nothing photo worthy really as it's been a day of soldering - and now we have a Capri with an alarm, immobilizer and the real reason for doing it all, remote central locking. Yes we really are trying to make it like a modern car! This week I need to find a new screen, get the wings on and wire in the stereo

Cheers for the comments guys. Anybody else wish they never bothered? And it was nearly in as well - time to find a spare! On a better note, everything is painted! The bonnet is on, and looks lovely The doors are hung, and the shut lines look pretty good (a minor miricle as I hate spending hours aligning things) and even some of the details are coming along - take one scruffy heater control panel add a handy sticker (I love ebay) and wallah Next big job is to get the wings on (and then find out the shut lines are actually terrible) and to find a new rear screen..... damn it!

Well it must have taken us nearly 3 hours, but the tailgate is on and lined up (I hate doing panel gaps) now to blow a load of cavity wax in the hinge areas and inside the tailgate Tonight's job is prepping the doors (the 3rd set I've had!) for paint. Sadly the first replacement set I had were too rippled for this level of gloss, they'd have looked terrible. Shame too as they're so solid, ah well. Least the new ones have all the fittings for the ghia/sport spec door handles, mirrors etc.

Well its been a while since an update, but stuff has been slowly been coming along. The first job on the shell was to dinitrol everything, so lashings of hot cavity wax have gone into all the box sections and some very heavy duty (but thankful not too messy) underbody wax has gone onto the high impact areas, and the bits that always rust on Capris! This is the stuff rust.co.uk/products/product/415157/009-dinitrol-4942-1ltr-under-body-wax-brown/Next up has been sealing the body and adding a fair bit of insulation - Lauren told me that there was no way she was going to be with an NVH engineer and have a noisy car - so hopefully it won't be too loud! The 6 dial dash is wired up now and seems to be working, just need to check the temp gauge when I get it up to temperature again. The rear 1/4 glasses are back in as well, I've used an external double sided foam to hold these in, since I couldn't find anything like the original stuff. Seems to work pretty well. With all those bits going in we've been painting all the trim up as well - everything is going to be gloss black And then a job I'd been worrying about, which in the end turned out to be pretty easy - the windscree The only problem was the flipping rubber was too long, nothing a knife couldn't sort out - don't you love non OEM bits! To finish off the tailgate came back today - shiney! Will try and get the tailgate on and the rear screen in this weekend - I hate this bit, so much chance of chipping the paint!

So with Lauren's Capri nearing completion I've finally started thinking about the Mk1 again. And got to say I'm feeling pretty excited about getting back to it Sadly no progress yet as such (hope to get back on it over the winter) but I have started collecting parts (anyone else find that as fun as I do?!) Photo time First up is a pair of lightweight fiberglass seats. Came out of a Westfield I think and are really nicely made and trimmed, got a bargain on them too. But I don't think I've ever known a heavier seat base/mount! So will have to find some alloy ones to sort that out. And now for something a bit different. I've been wondering what to do wheel wise for a while now and have come to the decision that one set of wheels won't be enough! (obviously) So far I've got the minilites that came with the car and a set of 4 spoke RS wheels (they're nice and light) - think I'm going to keep these as the full track rims, one with a set of slicks, one with some wets. Thing is that neither of these are really the look I'm after. Then I thought I'd have a set of road wheels, and keeping with the muscle car theme I thought I'd take the steels with chrome rims/centres from the Mk2 and have them banded to suit. Not got this done yet, but I still really like the idea so will get it sorted out sometime soon. Hopefully they'll look a bit like the rally wheels you get on Cameros. But still something was missing - could I get away with another set of rims, with a set of road legal track tyres of course. Yeh of course I can, but they'd need to be a bit different! Plus I had a trip to the US for work, so the obvious thing to do was to bring a set of wheels back in my luggage Like so They're Circle Racing wheels, 13 inch, 6 in for the front, 7 for the rear. Spun rims, so they're not too heavy, and pretty much a stock car (Nascar) style - I'd have rather had the 7 spoke design that Aero Racing make, but sadly they don't have beads so aren't suitable for the road. Finally I also brought back one of these Its lexan rear wing, rake adjustable. This going to be one of those try it and see things, hopefully it'll look alright! If not it was at least cheap (I wish we could get car parts here as cheap as they do in the States!) Either way I'm guessing it's a pretty rare thing in Europe which I always consider a bonus. So, thoughts?

Wrapping the manifold might not be a great idea, I heard they crack if you do. If it does tho they are really cheap to buy Always a risk, but having wrapped quite a few the only one I ever had let go was a very rusty tubular one. Given how much happier temp wise the carb seems to be now I'm happy with the risk. Plus like you say I can probably get a spare for next to nothing (another thing to keep an eye out for!)
