So I've seen a few attempts to build a Bosozoku car in the UK, Europe and America, invariably some thing with super wide arches, super wide wheels and lots of lowness, occasionally lairy painted ,oh and one of those exhausts for the truly adventurous. Sometimes the car is Japanese, some times it isn't. No one has gone all out, full on, bosozoku or Garuchan on a saloon car yet as far as I can see, either being a bit too restrained on the styling or opting for a smaller car (the rather splendid Axiom as a good example). I got to thinking though, people seem to be attempting to copy what they see the Japanese folk doing to their cars, but seem to be ignoring the history of bosozoku and more crucially garuchan cars. You see if a British or European person were to build a proper full on garuchan car they would be taking a Capri, applying a Zakspeed kit to it, and then going wild with the metallic purple paint, stars and all that other good stuff. Here is why: Garuchan is the word we were supplied by my friend Tetsu supplied to describe the extreme cars we often referred to as bosozoku. Garuchan is a translation of Grand Championship, which is in fact the Fuji Super Silhouette Series, that was the home to the crazy kitted Super Silhouette racers that the cars in question kits were based on : www.speedhunters.com/2008/11/retrospective_gt_gt_nissan_super_silhouette_racers/Which leads to So by this line of thinking I reckon a Euro bosozoku should be more based on this : and this All of which is pretty obvious... however there is more! Whilst I was looking into Group 5 cars (which is the group that the Super Silhouette and the Zakspeed cars ran in), I found that they also ran Group 5 in IMSA in the states, which lead me to find these : Mustang Porsche and more excitingly Monza! Mercedes! Chevrolet Cavalier (I'm guess not much to do with our Cavalier?) A little bit later on in the life of IMSA there is of course this little lot So there you go.. just need to find/build a suitable kit now, get that metallic paint and go to town ... what other Group 5 cars are floating around out there, or cars that ran in the same saloon series? Brilliant! Group 5 always did tend to make cars look agressive as hell. Couldn't say if it made them prettier though. Compare this group 4 Lancia Stratos: To the group 5 Stratos Turbo. Or how about the Beta Montecarlo Turbo? Also, someone Group-five-ing/ Garuchaning a BMW E21 would have a field day! And if we're talking wacky paint jobs you can't go wrong with an Art Car scheme. Proving once and for all that BMW were the original Bosozoku

There were a few road cars built over here that were of that style and with paint easily as lairy as any bosozoku car. I'll try and find photos but as they were universally branded as "utter wibblepoo" it might be a struggle.

Porsche and more excitingly Monza! Indeed a Chevy Monza One ran in the UK in the Thundersaloon class I'm sure I had some pictures somewhere Alongside this one Which I'm happy to say is being restored by an RR contributor (probably more lurker as he posts little) and hopefully finished in 2014 Hill climb Commodore - wouldn't need much more work

Grand Champion Series was always nicknamed "Gra-Chan" in Japan.
Being 'English' words, they needed to be converted into 'Katakana' ( phonetic alphabet ) in order to be written 'in Japanese'.
Katakana is not all that precise, and certain syllables get exaggerated. Effectively it makes non-Japanese words easier to pronounce in spoken Japanese.
So, 'Grand Champion' becomes グランド チャンピオン
Shortened to 'Gra-Chan' it becomes グラ チャン
The first two syllables ( グ and ラ ) are important. They are 'Gu' and 'Ra'. Run together ( as in spoken Japanese ) you get 'Gura'. It actually sounds more like one syllable. It's 'Gura' like the 'Gra' in 'Grandfather', but with an almost imperceptible 'u' sound inserted.
So it's 'Gurachan' ( pronounced like 'Gra chan' ) rather than 'Garuchan'.
Sorry for the Japanese 'lesson'....

I've been looking at a lot of stuff like this... ...from the excellent Hashinashizoku recently. I am also currently in France. My thought process (for when I next have some money) goes thus: 1. Procure cheap Peugeot 405 saloon. 2. Look at lots more Garuchan stuff. 3. Look at this: 4. Buy some MDF. 5. Combine. 6. Turn up at RRG; receive adulation of the crowd.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I may have to change my nomination for best new thread. I would join in but I've had a hard drive meltdown, however I'll be on a Super Saloon hype as soon as my laptop is back in action.
