ok guys i wrote a thread a few weeks back about my escort with running problems.
ok since having the car i have my it run better. short story 1. hard start hard to keep running 2. i sorted that but always stalled at tickover. 3 changed every sensor there is along with leads plugs coil pack idcv ect ect. 4. checked all vacuum pipes ect ect.
so initially you would think it should be fine well this happens> can some times start flick of the key other times a good few spins. ticks over fine for 10 seconds or so then drops down and hunts or sometimes hunts at normal revs until you rev it up. when ticking over can start hunting then go back to normal then back to hunting. there seems to be a clapping sound under the cam belt cover. looked and the belt seems to be very bouncy, but doesnt seem enough to jump a tooth. sooo any ideas? if a belt was loose enough not to jump out of time but to make slack for the cams, would it cause this?

personally i would change the cam shaft bearings at the same time! bit of a fiddle as i had to use a how made tool "tube" to tap them out, but it might aswell be done and from what i can remember they was £13 for bronze coated ones or something like thats off ebay

What i done i got an old tyre pump gauge and hooked it upto the fuel rail and the pressure was low, even though the pump was working and going at 1 speed it just was weak but i still need to change the idle control valve as it does fluctuate up and down but not always

i know there the regulator is but the thing is, the previous owner drove it around for a whole 5 years whith it gradually getting worse until it got to the point where i bought it how it is so i'm a bit hear and there with what to think, but hopefully a new pump does the trick.

I'm hoping it is the pump as i got the tank hanging down right now with 2 hours of blood and swet cracking these bleeding bolts :/ i havent found any fuel leaking from pipes or smelt any. theres been no puddles left. how does the regulator fail? How can you tell if thats gone? cant the fuel pump just wear down over time and not able to just hold pressure?

Just found out at running it should be as ford states "27-30 psi" where it's at 21 max and if i rev it it drops to 20 psi so i'm guessing the pump is a bit weak. but yeah someone said it shouldnt drop off after priming

hello, it's a 1.8 silver top zetec
checking fuel pressure at different stages
1. ignition on without engine running ( goes to around 14 psi for a second then drops as soon as the pump stops priming)
2. with engine finally running at 1500 rpm it's at 20 psi
3. try to rev the engine and it drops a little below 20, i mean by a fraction so it may drop to 19 psi at most
does that pressure sound right or does the pump sound goofed?
cheers

how do i check the timing?? i tried google searching and haven't got much idea, as i took the cam cover off and there's no marks what so ever! someone said they use a 5mm thick bar to lock the cam as thats how you time them, using the locking point in the cam pulley. i looked back and front of the pulley and there's no locking points it is the silver top zetec. also the cambelt is perished, so i'm not going to attempt to start it now. unless i know the timing is out and it can quickly be set for me to find out that was the problem all along and then i'd have a cambelt change

Theres fuel getting through and it's sparking even though the spark isn't the best one ive ever seen but got both of them but it just doesn't want to have it but as i said when it does fire it can go to 2000 rpm and tick over at that and rev like its got power with a bit of stutter then it can drop to a 1000rpm and end up like curse word. i just can't figure it out, i'm getting know where

ok so i bled a bit of the fuel from the valve and it eventually fired up and now it does stay ticking over but at 2000 rpm and some times 1000 and just fluctuates some times. when it's revs, they can stick at times as it seems.
things changed
coil pack leads plugs temp sensor throttle position sensor crank sensor cam sensor Maf sensor
still hard to start but when it eventually does fire it stutters but then comes into life but with problem above, so i'm still missing something??

i'm in Redditch Worcestershire and yes it has a port that's in the passenger front pillar and it would be brilliant if you could plug it in but i'm so far away from you the readers seem so expensive aswell :/

Hello,
i just bought a 1996 1.8 zetec ford escort 16v.
cut the story short very very hard to start and run like horse cack.
1. turn the key keeps spinning 2. if it fires it's literally for a second 3. if you're lucky and it stays running with a pump from you're foot it's wibblepoo. 4. put foot down slowly and the revs will build up to the top out point 7000 rpm. 5 slam your foot down and it sounds like it wants to die. 6. take your foot off after trying to rev it and it picks up revs coming off the pedal but only for a second.
things done and checked
1. maf sensor replaced 2. plugs replaced 3 full tank 4. checked and it sparks fine while spinning "so not immobiliser" 5. fuel pump makes sound when key is turned.
so what am i missing D': i'm going man running around this car
please help or if there's anyone local to Redditch who don't mind popping in and having a look if i supply tea and dunkers
cheers james
