I have an update on progress. Nice big box arrived today from Newton Commercial with the carpet kit. I used Newton Commercial carpets in the fasty so I knew they were quality but this set is even better. The rubber edging around the heater outlets, the rubber mat for behind the pedals, the heel pads and the thickness of the under felt on the floor pieces all confirm the quality and the price wasnt the most expensive either. Sadly however, due to the Golf needing MOT'd and the carpets only arriving today the car wont be making its debut at the Scottish VW owners show at Biggar this weekend. No point getting this far and presenting it un finished. Dave.

I completed the work for the MOT today. No video this time, I needed to get work done a little quicker than on sunday so you will need to make do with old fashion pictures that don't move. Started with getting the cars bum in the air; Wheel off; Popped the bearing cap off, removed the split pin and with a 24mm removed the securing nut; Once that nuts off the outer bearing will fall out. Keep it clean if re-using. Then the drum will pull off revealing the brakes; Good idea to take a picture before dismantling so that you can see where each spring goes when its time to reassemble. These are the parts laid out in order of fitment; Now I need to remove the wheel cylinder. Things were stiff but you need to go easy as bleed nipples can snap, brake pipes can twist and nuts can round off. If you get away with none of these things happening you can count yourself lucky. I got the cylinder swapped and the brakes all re-assembled. The self adjuster for the handbrake means its quite a faff getting things back together, especially compared to a Beetle. With the brakes back together it was time to change the bearings. Start by pulling off the seal from the inner bearing; The inner bearing will now lift out. Next job is to drive out the bearing races. There is a groove on the inside of the drum that lets you hammer out the old races from the inside (front bearing is hallerd out from the back of the drum and vice versa); Drive in the new bearings by using a large socket the same diameter so that the race goes in square; Grease up the rear bearing and drop into place; Push on the new seal; Flip the drum over and push it onto the spindle then push the front bearing into place before securing with the washer and nut; To set the torque of the securing nut I fitted the wheel with the centre cap remover. This let me tighten the nut until there was no wobble in the bearing but not so tight that it caused drag. Once happy the wheel came back off before fitting the split pin; And then the bearing cap; To finish off this side I bled the brakes and checked the handbrake. All was good so I moved on to repeat the process on the other side. At this point my camera decided to die but I did get a picture of why the back brakes were so imbalanced. You can see from the picture that the cylinder is seized on the left piston. This piston was doing nothing to slow the car so glad its all swapped and working as it should now. Dave.

The reason there are not too many pictures of the job is because I was shooting video and this is the finished how to. The full front spring swap compressed into 10 minutes;

I started ticking off jobs for the MOT today. Number plate light working then onto the front strut which all came off without issue; Right up to the point I had to remove the top nut. The other side is a 22mm but this side is a 21mm. No big problem except my set of swan neck spanners includes 13/14/15/16/17/18/19/20 and 22mm spanners. Sunday afternoon and I need a 21mm swan neck spanner and I have no car. No problem however, necessity is the mother of invention. Start with an old 21mm socket; Tickle it with the grinder; Introduce it to an old spanner; Make the bond permanent; Jobs a good un. No pictures (video will follow when I edit it) but the spring is swapped and the strut is back on the car. Need to think about getting the tracking done after working on the front and tomorrow I hope to get onto doing the back brakes. Dave.

Remember my prediction about the number plate light being the easy bit? Didnt expect this rust covered mess; So a good excuse to try the vinegar dip rust removal; Bottle of smart price finest vinegar (not distilled condiment), tin and part; This is what we start with for a before and after comparison; We will see how it looks after a day or 2 in the tin; Dave.

Small update time. Things are frantically being sanded, polished and cleaned within an inch of their existence but a nice package arrived today. Moment of panic when we unwrapped it and saw a Mountney box but the Moto Lita steering wheel arrived and the quality is much better; Trial fitted it on the boss to check clearance and all is good; Boss is going to get a lick of paint then we will get the wheel in place.

Today the wee Golf went for its third MOT in my ownership. Not bad for a car I didnt really know I wanted. Only three issues to sort and I am looking for some knowledge if you are able to help I would be grateful, stay tuned. 1st issue is easy. N/S number plate light. Changing a bulb should be a piece of curse word but now I have typed this it will probably be a nightmare. 2nd issue. N/S front spring is broken. I hate working with coil springs but needs must and I have the loan of a proper spring compressor, not the threaded rods of certain death. 3rd issue is the odd one. Rear brake imballance and they are only working at 54% and 32% efficiency. Handbrake is fine so its not the shoes and I replaced flexi lines 3 years ago so thinking I need to swap out the rear cylinders. This is where I need to tap into the collective knowledge. The usual sources are listing 2 types of cylinder. For cars with pressure regulator and cars without. How do I identify if my car has a pressure regulator and could the car have been fitted with the wrong cylinders in the past and this is why the efficiency is low? As said, its not a bad list for another years motoring but whats the betting I order parts from GSF the day before a 50% off weekend? Dave. P.S. Excellent, I hope the Moto Lita feels a little more 'premium' than the Mountney one as well as fitting the car. I doubt trimming the wheel would be too expensive, there was a guy on here who went into car trimming and his work did look excellent. Also there is a guy I know in Coatbridge (I think) who also does trimming as a side job, I could ask if he does wheels if you want? Wouldnt hurt to ask mate, that would be good. Its been a week of highs and lows on the supply front meaning it will be all go if its going to make it to Biggar at the end of the month. o as well as the steering wheel hold up the carpets may scupper the schedule. Going with Newton Commercial as these are whats in the fasty and the quality is spot on. Problem is they make to order and can take 4 weeks. They have said they will try and speed up the order but no promises. The one bit of good news this week is thanks to my mate Jack we now have this; Jo will get it looking like brand new and get it on the car. Dave.

Can you not just get the old wheel re trimmed? Please don't get a cheap Mountny wheel, I had a wood rimmed wheel from them for 20 years as it never made it onto the car it was bought for, when I eventually fitted it I was so disappointed that it was removed and sold in a few weeks! We thought about that. We didn't look into costs for re-covering but you can buy the exact same wheel for £150. Thing is it's only 13 inch and feels a bit small. The Mountney wheel went straight back. We found a stockist for Moto Lita and ordered a 14 inch wood rimmed wheel but after waiting a week and it not arriving we called them. The response was "we are waiting to order your wheel in" which is rediculous given they were fast enough to take payment. So today I found a direct source from Moto Lita and they will get a call Monday to see if it can be sent straight away and the first one will be cancelled.

Easier to explain than if you had named her Frog :-) I would have trekked along to beside the bridge but we came to a conclusion about towns in Georgia. Whether rightly or wrongly we decided that the more storage units and check cashing services in the town the greater the possibility of their being less than friendly locals. To get the pictures of the bridge I parked the hire car (and left SWMBO) beside a petrol station in front of a storage business and had to run 1/3 mile back up the highway so we werent for hanging about too long. If you like Duel you might like this video (not mine); If I get the chance I would love to do some of Convoy and try and get more from the West coast. I had a batch of location shots for San Francisco a few years ago that included Bullit but lost the SD card on my travels and had to do the ones I could remember from memory. francisco then and now by Dave Campbell, on Flickr If it wasnt for real life, jobs, bills and lack of funds I would love to do loads more of these.

I also found the junction where the roof comes off BTJustice's police car but we couldnt get parked close enough and when we got to the Snowmans house all the neighbours were milling about so it felt a bit wrong to park up and take pictures of a house in a quiet neighbourhood.
