As the title says, I'm trying to modify the BMW M52 engine loom that's in my Triumph.
The loom as it stands has lots of redundant wires and lots of huge plastic boxes, into which BMW have stuffed wires, (literately stuffed), it looks like badly cooked spaghetti!
This bundle is impossible to de-tangle, It's made this way!
So, I'll have to cut and rejoin the wires, the power and earth wires aren't a problem, the sensor wires may be (a problem!).
2 real questions please, will cutting, shortening and using a connector to rejoin the wires affect the reading from the sensor? I'm thinking of the more complicated sensors, crank, O2 and camshaft.
And can you suggest a neat and 1960's looking way of doing this please? I'm trying to get a bit more of an uncluttered under bonnet look!
Thanks

I always quite fancied one of these, There was a chap round the corner from my Grandparents in Lincoln about a decade ago who had a pair of those or something similar on his drive. I never saw them move or not on the drive, interesting non-the-less. I know a company in Ashford Kent who use a couple of these for off-road installation work, they break down, a lot! Whether it's 'cos they're running on dirt/mud or inherent flaws, I don't know.

Make sure you use the 01635 874 646 number or click the link, the other branches don't really deal in specialist cars. you may not get the best price!

Thanks for the facts on the SR-71, I knew I was close to being correct! And here's one of my favorites, loved by many who flew it, mainly because it was very strong and could take lots of punishment! And after hitting a chimney!

I think it's worth considering the capabilities of the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird:- These were reconnaissance aircraft not fighters. These planes started flying over half a Century ago. They retired over quarter of a Century ago. Maximum operational speed was intended to be Mach 3.3 (2,193 mph). In 1986 whilst successfully outpacing a Libyan surface-to-air missile, Pilot Brian Shul exceeded Mach 3.5. I remember hearing him giving an account of this episode years ago, he said at Mach 3.5 he saw the missile drop away as it had exhausted its fuel so he throttled down but he felt that the plane still had plenty of power & speed in reserve and Mach 3.5 was smooth & effortless. Compare this to a capable, fast modern military plane - the Eurofighter Typhoon which has a top speed of Mach 2 (1,550 mph). Didn't they also leak like a worn out A series engine? I think* the seals didn't (seal) till it was up in the higher atmosphere and going quickly, the outside lower pressure "sucked" them into place....and wasn't the fuel very dangerous to life, being very corrosive...? *Not surprised if I'm wrong!

One of my cars is surprisingly difficult to get reasonably priced insurance for, it's not really a classic, but it's not my daily so I can't use my NCB! It's a Mazda MX5 MK2. I tried A-Plan and was very pleased, it's important for me to have European break down, the MX5 is mainly used for trips abroad (Brno this year) and A-Plan came up with a good deal for the package, saving almost £100 on my previous insurer. After being treated appallingly by Lancaster Insurance, it was refreshing to speak to A-Plan, helpful and interested and with someone who both understood old cars and my needs! I clicked a link on the MX5Nutz forum, but if you click above, you'll get the details of the branch to use, I understand that not all branches have the specialist insurance skills! I rarely praise businesses on forums, but A-Plan deserve some thanks from me. Andy

Right detailing people, I'd love a step-by-step, basic "this gets your car pretty clean and shiny" guide. One written for us though, doesn't need lazer checking of treatment or any of that stuff. Product recommendations and a shopping list would be great. quote] Me too, I've found out about the 2 bucket method of washing a car, which works well for me, not having access to a hose! But, I'd like to know more.......

Don't really know what works, but I know foam socks don't!
In the end, I made a large airbox with a big KN on the end.

Should add that others in Europe quickly copied Ford with mass production, Morris for example started by assembling cars from parts brought mainly in the USA.

Cars have always been built to a price and designed to have a finite life span, they've just got better at predicting the fail point, perhaps MB overdid it slightly?
But,(as pointed out above), car makers wouldn't sell many new cars if they lasted forever.
This would then remove the economies of scale, pushing up the price, Edwardian cars were incredibly expensive, much like a personal jet today, only the very rich could afford them.
In the USA, things were slightly different, Henry Ford decided to apply mass production to car making and his goal was to make his cars cheap enough for a worker in his plant to be able to afford one.
And because of the size of the country and the fact that if your car broke down, it could be a huge problem, (imagine broken down, 250 miles from the nearest town, on a road that's hardly used and before mobile phones!), America quickly developed cars that were easy to maintain, unstressed, simple and reliable.
But the style was changed every year (look at Tri Chevys, for an example), this was the planned obsolesce that kept the cars selling, (that and the fact that Americans seem to have more accidents).
This also goes some way to explain why European cars (and by extension, Japanese too) tended to have more sophisticated engineering then USA ones.
And before pistols are drawn, I didn't say better engineering!

Otherwise we'd all still be wearing bell bottoms. Do you mean bell bottoms are out of fashion? When did this happen? Must get out of the garage more!

I used non braided injection pipe for the high pressure run and normal rubber pipe for the return, all under the car and no problems.
Just make sure you get the grade that copes with Ethanol.
Braided pipes will look much cooler though!

Need about 16 of these small flat nuts, they fit onto the back of Lucas headlamp bowls, tried searching, but because I don't know what they're called, no luck! Sorry about the large pics, I'm failing to understand the drag 'n drop!
