The other odd thing is all these older American boxes seem to be in the Midlands. The one I just sent you the link to is too.
I'm still seriously tempted into the one I sent you, but I don't really need it. Buy it or I will!

Yes, there was quite a bit of badge engineering at that time.
I've been reading ALOT of old toolbox posts on garage journal 😂

The proto is actually fairly similar design to the ones you have. From the research I did toolbox manufacture was a funny game at the time in the states, one manufacturers product could be sold by half a dozen different brands. Like these boxes were made by Waterloo Industries, and were sold under the Waterloo, SK, Kennedy, Craftsman and Proto brands. Right, hang on, let me go find a link...

You’ve done well to find all those. I keep an eye out for non snap-on ones and all I’ve managed to get is a proto branded (same as craftsman and a couple of others) roll cab. I do have a massive Hahn & Kolb machinists cabinet and a versatool or two, but they’re getting damn pricey now. Lucky indeed! Especially considering how it all came about. I saw the base cab on ebay, liked how many drawers it had, then did a bit of research to find out who made it. I then searched high and low for matching boxes. The base cab was in ibstock. I found the gray top box on Facebook market place, in kettering, then found the 2 draw mid box also on FB in stoke on Trent. The autopro box, also from FB was in Moseley. Managed to arrange all collections for Friday afternoon and went on a bit of a mission. Unbelievable that all were available at the same time, they aren't common! However, there is another Gray top box on shpock right now for £40. He doesn't know what it is though, has no decal. I'm trying hard not to buy it. I don't need it! No idea why that's in the UK! Gray weren't imported. This one is only here as a mechanic brought it over when he moved here from Canada. The tool box liner I found on eBay (super bargain, 14 square meters for £14!). That was in Walsall, so managed to pick that up on the journey too. The plan was to probably sell one of the top boxes and my rubbish old boxes but I've filled all 20 drawers already so looks like I'll be keeping them all! I guess that's the problem with needing 1/2, 3/8 and 1/4. Metric, af, whitworth and BA. At least BA take up no space! I'm sure there is a proto bottom box on ebay at the moment, that or FB marketplace. There is a nice old Waterloo top box too (good Waterloo, not newer waterloo).

A tile saw blade ( tungsten carbide coated steel rod) available from most DIY will substitute for an arbrafile blade. I've only used them on tiles, but the world of model engineering don't agree about that. There are japanese blades that are pretty similar too but have large loop ends so need big holes to thread then through. Beauty of these is how thin they are and how small the locating pins are meaning fine work is possible. They will even work on tool steel apparently. Abrafiles are so expensive these days as no one is selling anything which quite fills their space, at least for the model engineers. For larger cut outs then I think there are a few modern alternatives available.

I've got a new abrafile in a pack somewhere. Problem is, when I find the file, I can't find the frame I bought it to fit to, and when I find the frame I can't find the file.....🙄 I've had them before but not know what they were. Seems a 3 pack of 8 or 9 inch ones are £20 these days! I need to make some clips to fit these in a hacksaw frame. The clips are available but they also look simple to make. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for more. I only bought these as they were cheap and looked interesting.

Can you make out any of the lettering? Seems to say "made in" so I'm going to guess the next work is England, or Britain? Oh, I zoomed in, I think it says made in Japan.

The socket I need looks like this... I need a replacement for the 3rd from the left as it's the wrong type, and it's also got 3 splits in it.

I have an old britool socket set with one piece missing. I need socket mh324. This is a 2ba socket in 9/32 drive (looks like 1/4 drive but isnt). It's an old set so they are bare metal, not chrome.
Anyone got one?
I may also be interested in metric combination spanners.
In fact, I may be interested in anything britool, but trying not to get carried away with old tool buying 😂

The abrafile blades and ball pein on top of the tray of stuff. Oh, I also got a 1940s cracker tin, for free. It was full of some guys old paperwork from the mid 1960s. Council worker time sheets, tax return stuff, paperwork from land compulsory purchase etc. Strangely, even looking at someone else's 60 year old tax stuff is enough to make my body physically stress! I hate tax returns!!!

Looks like rain tomorrow so went to the Saturday afternoon boot sale. Haven't taken any pics bit got a few bits.
3 britool BA spanners 2 metric britool 1/2 sockets Williams brake spanner Aa tyre service kit. It's a depth gauge and pressure gauge. I was after another pressure gauge and this ones pcl. A 1/4 drive socket driver, screwdriver handle type. Interesting as it has another 1/4 female in the top so I can put a ratchet on the end. 2lb ball pein hammer, Whitehouse. A tray full of old tools, contents included 5 hammer heads, a load of old spanners (5 or 6 worth having, king dick, Gordon etc), some new drill bits with pilot ends, a rabone nice old rule, files, etc etc. And best of all, 2 new 11" abrafile blades! These are round files fitted into hacksaw frames and used under tension. They are great but haven't been made for quite some years and no-one has started making a replacement. Seems these are silly money on ebay now!
I think the whole lot cost maybe £9. £3 for the tray and 50p each mainly for all then other bits.

Looks like you're doing a cracking job bringing them back to good useable condition - bit of patina never hurts anything on this forum! A tool chest is something on my list for once I get my garage built. Currently using a selection of wooden cupboards & drawers of various sizes/heights/rigidity which might well go up in flames with the worm-eaten roof timbers when the old garage comes down! Thanks. I've been transfering my tools over and this is pretty much full already! I think everything I want in it, is in it now though. Now it has weight in it a couple of the drawers feel like they need a little more attention. They don't feel bad, just not as nice as the others.

I'm tempted to decant some of the halfords enamel from the aerosol into a jar and use my airbrush to puff in some of the worst damage, but I've a suspicion they are probably best left alone. They look better in pics than they do in real life but that may just be because ive been up close and personal with them.
I'll live with them for a while and see if the urge to repaint them goes away. The main issue with repainting them is I'd have to sort out the stuff to replace the semi tubular rivets holding the handles on.

EBay company sent the wrong size locks. Seems they have a different idea on how to measure cam locks than anyone else on the planet. Hopefully that situations sorted now and by the end of the week they should have all new locks with matching keys 🙂

Puffed a bit of halfords ral3001 enamel on the welds and polished/waxed the top box. Had to weld the rear corners of the lid and the front corners of the box too. It doesn't look too bad now I guess, a little tattier than the other 2 boxes, but it's autopro so matches better than the Gray box, even though that one is in much better condition. Might sell the Gray box, haven't decided yet. A few pics, best I could take in the current cramped conditions. Just need to line the top box drawers now. I've rubbed paraffin wax on the outside of the slides and run 1964 US military moyl grease in the slide grooves.

I walked past a back street garage today who were wagging up a mk2 cav cabriolet. Fancy another? 😂 Funnily enough, I think I've only ever seen 2 mk2 cavalier cabriolets and they were both in Sheffield. We're they factory or a conversion? Yours just keeps looking better. Got a pic of this vert the other day, put it in the spotted thread if anyone's interested.

Watching your brass casting is very interesting. I was hoping to set up to cast some brass soon myself. I didn't expect it to be problematic, I am obviously wrong! I haven't looked into it at all really yet so have no real clue what's involved. I had planned on sand casting though. Didn't even know you could use plaster.
Now I'm seeing what your doing, I assume there is a good reason why your using plaster for a mould rather than sand?
Looks like I'm going to have to do alot more research before I look into setting up.

It comes to something when even your tool boxes need patches letting in! The whole corner had rotten out, from the outside by the Looks of it. The roll cab and mid box have been cleaned, polished and waxed. They look good enough not to re paint. Ive lined them all now too. Now the worst top box has been welded up and a few paint touch ups done, I'll polish and wax it and see how it comes up. I'll post more pics when the garage is less of a state so I can actually get to it all!
