I would love to be able to say I have the skill/tools or knowledge to be able to take on DIY such as this but I seriously lack in those departments not to mention I'd have SWMBO's mother in my ear literally ALL the time, she's bad enough as it is about small things let alone refitting a kitchen or bathroom myself.
"Why don't you shop at Waitrose? You know it's all organic there" (I work as a buyer of stock for an organic home delivery company and get free F&V so why would I buy more? Not to mention I'm not rich enough haa)
"Why are you drinking coke? You know it rots your guts"
"You two should eat more fish" (We eat plenty)
"John Lewis have got a sale on their *insert any item here we can't afford here* It comes with a great warranty you know"
"You should keep the garden furniture in doors so it doesn't go mouldy" - literally where's the logic? I'll admit to folding inwards on this, the garden chairs are indeed in the living room at present... I need a thumb print tattooed on my forehead.
I get the sentiment but sometimes it's just monotonous.
I imagine she'd give me small tips and if I didn't follow them to the letter, I'd be wrong and would hear about it at every meal or visitation. I'll stick to mechanical things for now because she hasn't got a clue about their workings or any idea that culture exists around them, my freedom!
I love what you are achieving so far it looks amazing!

Looks cool as! I did think about cutting my frame etc but in the end I decided all mods need to be reversible and I've kept all the original bits. My brother had a black kh with a micron, must have been 5 years ago or so, he had it running but it wasn't great, we popped the head and barrel off to discover a piston that was very bowed in the middle but not holed yet, I don't recall what actually happened to that bike in the end, I think he left it in one of his friends sheds in Lincoln and presume it got sold on or scrapped. Funny how things come about isn't it hah! Wish I had the micron now having seen prices... Edit: found a picture

A few details people may not notice like the tops of the shocks where it mounts to the frame that were bare aluminium got painted black instead of leaving it bare, the engine got painted with high temp paint after cleaning, the side cases got very lightly polished and I tried to replace all old bolts with new if I had them spare in the garage, I also swapped the rather scary Philips head screws holding the engine casings together for a stainless steel Allen head set. I'm thinking the headlight brackets which slide over the forks need reversing upside down to sit the headlight lower, I'll do that later on and the wheels need polishing up and re-blacking.

A long time has passed, the garden patio and fence cleaned, plants grew and I swapped the Sachs for a Kawasaki KH100EX with a friend, her Cheap moped dropped a valve and needed a working vehicle I suggested for her to get a new GY6 engine because they're cheap as chips but she wanted gears instead. She bought it (the kawasaki) from one of her friends who'd had ideas of putting it back together but never did, she was going to do the same until the ped stopped abruptly. Oddly it must have a 110 or 125cc engine because the side casing she bought for it never fit over the stator she had and the kh100 flywheel never fit the crank so I need to measure the piston up soon. I took a week off work as you do and had nothing better to do so set about splitting it down with what I had sitting about in the garage. Having never seen a 50cc piston I was amazed at just how small it was, the timing chain was like jewelry it was that tiny. It amazingly fit in the forester without removing anything. Just folded the car seats down. Love this car more and more everyday! On arrival at home. The last time the two bikes saw each other. It was in reasonably good condition having been stored in various garages since the turn of the new millennium just the wiring has gone hard in some places and a few bits are missing or don't make sense so more research will be carried out. A little bit of sanding and rust remover/converter here and there. It was so nice last weekend I even moved the worktable out into the garden. It was starting to look like a bike again quite quickly I ordered a few bits and am going to hopefully convert it from 6V to 12V electronics. One of the mysteries is the stator plate that came with the bike, it's completely different to literally all pictures of the ones that should come on the bike and there are no points on it as well as having no part numbers to run so I think I'll be buying an original one due to not having timing marks on this one, oddly, it fits and its currently on the bike (though I have no idea if it works yet due to having other missing electronics (no rectifier etc) I have read that Kawasaki changed the bike from 6v to 12v in the early 90's but I have no evidence of the age of the engine and there's literally nothing with this stator design online. The shock seals were properly shot so I attempted to split them down only fall at the first hurdle, the bolt on the bottom kept spinning and the "old broom" trick wasn't doing me any favours so I found some more online and they should arrive in the next few days. This is the part inside the shock that I couldn't get to stay still. I started to clean up little bits here and there including brackets and handle bar bits one day it was raining. Today the new seat got mounted up, need to find straighter bars and get the new shocks cleaned up before new pads and other small bits get done. Liking it so far. Much more so than the Sachs anyway.

I find the more expensive the car the more expensive the repairs though the probability of need for repairs increases as the price drops (model dependant haha), £500-£2000 for the daily, toys on the other hand range for me with the cheapest being £160, most expensive being 4k, completely depends on the individual, I didn't have a house to run or bills to pay so spent a lot of money on cars and parts, that has changed now, daily car sees £500-£1500 with repairs/upkeep ontop, toys now are whatever I can spare often below £500, I've been fiddling with small old motorbikes a lot recently just because I can still do the "repair and modify" thing without it breaking the bank.

I think some cars are ridiculously priced but then again that's personal opinion, japanese cars aren't common here so command a price just for having survived in the first place.
I'm just salty because I want a 240z for less than 10k but not a rusted out wreck for 10k that needs another 10k spent on it...

I'm not proud to admit this but... last year my flat mates got married to each other and decided to create a baby. They also said they wanted to buy a house shortly after the baby was born, to do this they wanted to move out of the flat we all shared and back home with their parents to save as much as possible, they announced it in April which was just short of a month before our contract renewal and there was no way I could afford to pay for it all by myself at the time and my family live too far away for me to be able to move back in with them without me quitting my job and leaving my life behind. "Luckily" if you could say that, I had been renting a council garage for a few years which is where I kept all my car bits, bike etc. It wasn't in a secluded area but just quiet enough. One week in May I made a kind of tall table which stood over the top of my car like a loft within the garage which I could put all my furniture on once they were broken down giving me enough space to stand beside the car to get dressed, bear in mind what council garages are like, with a car, a vespa, an engine crane, three sets of wheels, loads of tools and half a flat worth of furniture flat packed, it was still tight! Some might ask why I didn't rent a room, truth be told I didn't have all that much money saved at the time and my flat mates had done a proper bodge job of decorating the flat so I didn't expect to see any of our deposit back, I was pretty much stuck with nothing else to do, luckily my work has a fully functioning kitchen area and showers and I work mostly alone at night so it didn't affect that at all. Once I had completely moved out of the flat, I slept in my car in the council garage, returning back just after 6am every morning and hoping no-one saw me getting in and closing the door behind me, I slept in my car very uncomfortably because it's only a golf and the seats don't go completely flat. I'd sleep for about 7 hours a day ish and spend a lot of time at tesco where I'd go to the loo if needed or generally just browsing, taking a mag off the rack and sitting up in the cafe reading it before putting it back and going to work. I lived that way for three months before I had saved enough to rent a house of my own with my other half. To this day, my friends, family and even my other half do not know I lived like that and I'm lucky enough to know they aren't interested in cars so they will never find this thread. I do not recommend it. Not one bit. As the days were getting warmer so was the garage with a south facing door, I'm sure it must have been pushing 35 degrees in there some days which puts a stop to sleeping I can tell you. Honestly, Id rather get on facebay and find a wibblepoo £300 caravan and use that, there's someone at work doing it right now sleeping on the road outside every night.

Young 'uns who don't know what this is need flogging! I would have to have been living under a pretty big rock to have never come across one of these in the last 20 years haha! I would say the cheapest way forward would be to just suck it up and buy a modified one and return it to standard, could be expensive but to be honest the longer you wait the more un-affordable they will become. If it's the sort of thing you would have as a "forever" car does it even need history? You've got forever to work on it and sort the things you don't like Create your own file and go from there, if it did come to ever selling it, I'm sure if you have proof at least you have looked after it and properly, I don't think it would be hard to sell. That's my 2 cents anyway. I'd rather actually own the car than dream about a perfect one coming up cheap if that makes sense, we know that just doesn't happen these days since sellers can just google a price and go from there even if the car is rubbish. Come to think of it, that may not be a bad shout, quite a lot of people worldwide modify these so I can imagine there is quite a flow of standard parts being sold to regain costs from the modifying. The other issue with having a "perfect" car is you wouldn't want to drive it for fear of damaging it or devaluing it. Then there is the other option, import. I haven't a clue what the average sale price is in Japan at present but we all know what their culture is like, second hand = cheap (in most cases). Maybe hit up JM-import.

Those legs to the left there, that's me and the missus haha! I decided again not to bring my camera and to look with my eyes, the 2000gt was a real un-expected treat. I kept missing the formula cars being started so gave up with that, loads of variety for the money. The only thing I will do next year differently is to bring a chair and sit by the side of the road and watch cars leave, 'tis a shame sometimes not to hear them in action. I went a bit weak at the knees for the Datsun 240z's, especially the two tone one red on top silver below, I really don't know why having never been in one or know anyone that's owned one, I just like them. I kick myself to this day that I let one of Datman's pickups get away from me a few years back. Ahh well there's time left yet! I seem to have a habit of getting into other people's photos haha, spotted myself again on petrolicious..

It wasn't quite a tool used for advertising but I expect if I saw it in this setting the message would be pretty clear, ignoring the odd woman that looks a little like Dio and the house behind, I'd rock this pickup!
