Young 'uns who don't know what this is need flogging! I would have to have been living under a pretty big rock to have never come across one of these in the last 20 years haha! I would say the cheapest way forward would be to just suck it up and buy a modified one and return it to standard, could be expensive but to be honest the longer you wait the more un-affordable they will become. If it's the sort of thing you would have as a "forever" car does it even need history? You've got forever to work on it and sort the things you don't like  Create your own file and go from there, if it did come to ever selling it, I'm sure if you have proof at least you have looked after it and properly, I don't think it would be hard to sell. That's my 2 cents anyway. I'd rather actually own the car than dream about a perfect one coming up cheap if that makes sense, we know that just doesn't happen these days since sellers can just google a price and go from there even if the car is rubbish. Come to think of it, that may not be a bad shout, quite a lot of people worldwide modify these so I can imagine there is quite a flow of standard parts being sold to regain costs from the modifying. The other issue with having a "perfect" car is you wouldn't want to drive it for fear of damaging it or devaluing it. Then there is the other option, import. I haven't a clue what the average sale price is in Japan at present but we all know what their culture is like, second hand = cheap (in most cases). Maybe hit up JM-import. |

Wouldn't bother with getting a completely standard one, having had a R33 GTR from stock they are really pretty underwhelming until you mod them a bit so don't discount ones that have some basic stuff around intake\exhaust, ECU and Boost Control as that really is the minimum you want on these to make them reasonably ok in the performance department. Biggest issue with them is rust, will be lucky to get one that's been in the UK for a while and rust free unless you pay a large premium. Import wise there will be less signs of rust but still worth thinking about as they will be at least 25 years old and they didn't put any rust protection on them whatsoever from the factory. Mechanically they are pretty bomb proof as long as serviced regularly and tuned sensibly, the gearbox synchros can fail between 3rd and 4th but repairable. On my stock box (with new synchros) and engine internals with lots of bolt on stuff running about 500hp the car had done well over 80000 miles and still going strong when I sold it (prob was running 500hp for about 50k of that 80k) but the rust was starting to appear even then and it was only about 12 years old. The Jackeria - I totally get what your saying and I did toy with the idea of getting one with a popped engine and sorting a replacement. If I did get one it would be a usable driver and certainly not cosseted away and unused.
miker33 - Thanks, some good tips there. Yeah, I'd happily have one with minor mods just nothing too extreme as it would need to be a reliable driver.
