To be honest as of now I have no clue how to get the speedo to work ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) But I know that will NOT have a w210 speedo in my car ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) But; I now have a speedo that COULD work, since it's electric. The W210 is still blocking the garage, so I started to try if I can make use of this W126 speedo. At first it appeared that this would never fit... Neither does the speedo face of the W124 align with the W126 speedo. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/ki-1.jpg) However, after some work with a file and a saw, I had this. The speedo face needed some slight trimming with a file and tin snip. The speedo housing was shortened with the angle grinder & a saw. And, it lined up quite nicely: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/ki-2.jpg) However. The rev counter did not fit. I had to remove the plug (that's the red and green wire sticking out) at the back and cut away some of the metal backing plate to clear the much bigger speedo. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/ki-3.jpg) However, with a bit of hacking and filing and angle grinding and sawing - I got there at the end. Amazingly 3 of 4 bolt holes even line up and the outside temperature display also bolts - almost! - up! ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/ki-4.jpg) Bit ugly from the rear, but what's important is on the front. So - let's turn it around, shall we? ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/ki-5.jpg) Yepp. That'll do just fine. But it's still some work left to do, like shifting the shift marks (er...), a bit of wiring and a lot of cleaning and then some more cleaning. And I need to figure out a way to reset the day trip counter. Or I just leave it unresetable. I'm not using it anyway. But for now - I have a - theoretically - working electric speedo that cost me exactely 0€ Cheers, Jan

I can't stand the pressure ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Speakin of which; before I start I need to repair my engine hoist. And redisgn it a bit to take this dirt cheap chinese 8 ton cylinder ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) 37€ delivered. If it last's a couple of engine chnages I'm very happy! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) right now I need to bleed & re-fill the hydraulic cylinder every single time before I can use it. And it's barely adequate to lift a six-cylinder diesel with humongeous slush-box... I hope this one will do better. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/hubzylinder.jpg) Oh and - yepp. That blöödy rust bucket is still blocking the garage... Scrappy will only come next week (if I can't sell the remains untill then). Cheers, Jan

Hey Pumpbandit ! Thanky a lot! Colour code is 473 "champagne metallic", only available until 9/'88, so pretty rare, especially on CE. Feel fee to share some pictures of your car, I think there need to be way more Disel-Coupés on the roads! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ------ Since it is fathers day today, I thought it would be nice to compare shafts. No, not what you'r thinking - shame on you! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) The W210 5spd. auto and W124 4spd auto prop shafts are the same lenght. With one difference: the center bearing position. But: it seems that thedifference in center bearing position equals the difference in the gearboxe's lenght (the 5spd. auto being longer of course). The centering bush and u-joint are the same; which menas the W210 prop shaft will fir the W124 differential, and the W124 center bearing will fit the W210 prop shaft. The W124 flex discs also fit the W210 prop, but are thinner. This basically means, I have two choices: get the W210 prop's rear piece shortened, or get the front piece of my allready shortened prop made shorter. The cost will be the same, either prop shaft will have to be shortened & re-balanced. But it's good to know that I have options here and the difference in flex disc thickness gives me extra room to fill or cut a few mm, leaving the slide joint fully engaged. Though I feel like using the much bigger W210 drive shaft, due to the higher amount of torque and 5th gear. And torque may increase later... *cought* ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/welle-1.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/welle-2.jpg) Fabulous! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Cheers, Jan

Yay! A mechanical failure ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) The wheel bearing started to make that "WW2 bomber in the distance"-noise and was actually louder than the engine. Since I need to drive quite a distance shortly, there was no reason to procrastinate this any further... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/radlager-1.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/radlager-2.jpg) (dirt from dropping it...) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/radlager-3.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/radlager-4.jpg) Took aabout an hour to change ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) If I thik abou it; a couple of years ago this would have been a big deal - but now... Not yet! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) It's not yet done and I don't know if it can be done (by me that is ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ). I have also contacted "my" pump builder and the guy making the aftermarket TCU (which could also controll a VTG turbocharger...). This would solve many problems, but cost a lot more money. As it stands now, a ECU und TCU came with the car allready - for free. I just don't know yet if it will work. Some say it will, some say it will not. I will try - but purely for economics. I think a mech. pump would be far more reliable. I don't know. I've not yet done my final decision (as allways ![:))](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cheesy.png) . Btw; the W204 C-class intercooler I bought last year is actually bigger than the W210 intercooler! But not wider (a bit shorter in fact)... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/llk-1.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/llk-2.jpg) If I can get this to fit, should be a nice upgrade! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Cheers, Jan

from pretty diagnostics to the probably most disgusting steering wheel ever ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) But you know what? I like it! Just because it IS so shabby. It's part of the car and it's been there from new. But lately some of the fixed stitches from the fixed re-trim fell apart... All by hand Speaking of which: one ASR & gearbox wiring loom out... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-12.jpg) Need to split them later, but should be easy. And shortly followed by the engine wiring loom. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-13.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-14.jpg) Stored in the Coupé's boot for now. Next was the removal of the oil coolers. Sadly both fans are stuck and very hard to turn. I don't think I'm making use of them. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-15.jpg) And of course - there's more wires ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Need to figure out the starting circuit, then the car can go to the scrappy. Only need to remove steering rack & 4 doors and it's done. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-16.jpg) Put the bumper back on and made use of the empty engine bay, tyres are sold and will go soon. Storeage room's tight, though ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-17.jpg) Also pulled the front brake calipers to put on some 15" scrapp wheels to keep it rolling. Gimme hop, joana... Er - hope. Guess what? Another day of - wires... But: I fully separated the gearbox & engine wiring loom, found the CAN connection and freed up the diagnostics socket. Diving deep into the fuse/relais box... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-7.jpg) Unwrapped and split the main engine room wiring looms (horns, AC, headlights, washer - all runing in one loom) and isolated it. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-8.jpg) And here'S another example of what makes this job so annoying; crossed wires. Which means: go back a couple of meter of raveld wires, figure out what does what, try to unknot them and then decide to cut it and hpe for the best. This is very time consuming. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-9.jpg) But I'm rather double-cautios now then scratching my head later when it comes to make it all work again. At least I got the wiring loom for the oil cooler fans out; no electronics! Just a simple relais, two temperature switches and two fans. Easy. But awefully wired, I actually had to cut 2 wires to get it out. And moving a bit towards the Coupé; I think I can find a convenient space for the throttle sensor here. Warm and dry. It's one ofthe most important sensors in the whole car. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-11.jpg) On a side-note: the cruise-controll is allready part of the ECU and std. equipment. And even better: the switch fits the steering column shrouds from '93 on ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Bonus: limiter function. Nice! I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel, finally! But there's still a complete loom I need to unwrap... ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Cheers, Jan

I'm starting to get a bit dizzy in my head ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Might be a copper worm infection? I don't know... I've touched a lot of unprotected wires lately. It would all be simple - but mr. stressed worker on assembly line just randomly stuffed wires in, next random conveyor belt worker put a carpet on top - hey presto! All done with the premium best-or-nothing Mercedes. Sigh... Most "looms" are entangled and meshed together - pure CHAOS. Still, I made a lot of progress today. Extracting the gearbox wiring loom which runs across the whole car. I removed the carpet & dashboar prior to opening the wiring channels. I'll let the pictures do the talking here... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-1.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-2.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-3.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-4.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-5.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/kabel-6.jpg) And of course the TCU is filled with oil ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/steuerger%C3%A4t_EGS.jpg) But since it was still working well, I assume it's not damaged. I'll let it drain, give it a clean and invest a couple of bucks in a oil-stopp cable. Well it might appear like nothing has happened, but now I know the basic wiring setup of the gearbox, know where everything is running to and what's connected to what and how. I labeled all up, tidied and split the loose wires into actuall wiring looms - not it can be extracted from the car next. The more time I'm taking with this now, the less time it'll take to install everything later. I'm starting to get a feel why mechanicall pumps & gearboxes are such a popular choice ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Cheers, Jan

Had a couple of hours today to start stripping the wiring... Awefull work, boring and tedious. The worst part of the whole thing, and the most time consuming. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606-14.jpg) Also started to strip out the interior, to gain access to all the wiring looms runing through the car... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606-15.jpg) ...for example to the shifter; which also contains electronics. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606-16.jpg) Once the carpet & dashboard are out it'll be "easy" to remove all the wiring looms. What makes it double annoying is the fact that this car is build very differently to previous cars; W108, W115, W123, W124, W201 - they all are build similar-ish. This W210 - nope. It's all designed so it can be quickly assembled on the conveyor belt... Sigh. Cheers, Jan

That's worth examining ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) 'Cause I think the aftermarket TCUs don't reduce torque during shifts. Which apparently helps the 5G-Tronic to stay alive. I recently drove a W210 E200 (gas) and it was almost like an automated manual, with every shift RPM dropped and rose again when the gear was engaged - weird ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) The OM606 doesn't do this (luckily as I might add!), so I guess the wastegate is briefly opened on the diesel? Anyway, for now I'M using the electronics for both engine & transmission - they come for free with the car and work very well. EGR & MAF can be deleted, all I need to know is how to get rid of the shift-lock mechanismn. I think that's a rather annoying thing... Cheers, Jan

Finally someone who's not doubting my sanity ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) With the sore back getting better, I was hoping to move forward today. Started by removing the exhaust and prop shaft... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606_ausbau-1.jpg) The exhaust holder is of a much better design - just another thing that got improved from the W124 era. Next was to unbolt the gearbox and all it's connections - which are onl three; wiring loom, shift rod and shift lock cable. I hope I can somehow delete the latter, it's anoying as fcuk. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606_ausbau-2.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606_ausbau-3.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606_ausbau-4.jpg) ^the wiring loom plug of course was full of oil - a known issue with those gearboxes. There's a leak-stopp adapter avaiölable which is like 11€. The TCU will probably be full of oil too. Which is no issue as long as there are no metal shavings in the oil (the wiring loom soaks with oil and capilary forces draw it into the TCU). Speaking of the TCU; all the electronic magic is contained in a box - the main engine loom is just two plugs and the engine can be removed. Very convenient! ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606_ausbau-5.jpg) Then I stripped the ancilliaries of the engine, to make life a little easyer for my knackered old engine hoist... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606_ausbau-6.jpg) Nice bonus: 115 amp alternator ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I was planing to upgrade this anyway, no need to buy one ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606_ausbau-7.jpg) and then came the big moment... Did I forgett something? Will it move? Will the engine hoist cope? ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606_ausbau.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606_ausbau-9.jpg) Hooray! It did! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Removed from it's rusty prison after all ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Surprisingly, the five speed automatic is not as huge as I thought it is. I don't think it's much longer than the old 4 speed... ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/om606_ausbau-8.jpg) Anyway - I got much more done today than I expected - the heavy stuff is done - now there's only a couple of wires left to free from the car.
