So, enough of dicking around... I took a week of work - plan is to get this through TÜV, replace the cylinder head and drive it! With the upgraded water pump intercooling can wait a little longer. I don't have enought time anyway. So - I dragged it out today and gave it a good wash. It's been collecting dirt for about 1.5 years now and I could not bare to see how sorry it looks any longer. So out with the washing cloth and buckets of water. Before (after rinsing it off to get rid of the worst dust): And after... And I noticed that the rust bubble on the driver's door has now grown rather big... It's time to take action here. And I also noticed some rust on the wind screen. This is rather alarming. It may have just come from the top trim piece rubbing, but it may also indicate a rotten screen frame. Bügger... And the rear screen has delaminated further. A known issue on MB Coupés. The rear screen is about 500-600€ just for the glas! I'm not gpoing to replace that any time soon. apart from that, the paint has not suffered that much - I guess the many coats of wax I put on helped to protect it. But it needs a re-polish. I'm out of wax, though. Has to wait a little longer. The to-do list is long, but i need to sort some stuf I cut away to make room for the air/air intercooler I'm no longer going to use. Stupid me! But I need to drive this again, after all the money & time I spent on it. And the Taxi also needs some serious work done, like welding the rear window frames and curing the rust on the front screen - and for that I need to take it off the road for some time - in which I also need a car. In it's current state, with cracked wind screen, the Taxi is not ready for TÜV, which is needs in september. It's still a lot of time, but during the warm season - why not drive the Coupé a bit? It's not getting better by collecting dust in the garage... Cheers, Jan

Oooooh this is exciting!! I was looking for one of these ever since I got the car... Pictured on the left is the new period correct floor mat, to the right the later series 2 / post-facelift floor mat. Of course my car needs the correct rubber floor mat! So I was over the moon when I - by pure chance - stumbled over an advertisment for one. New old stock, never been used before. I payed the guy 70€ - a stupid amount of money for a floor mat. But - you know me. The difference is quite obvious - and the series 1 mats are also fixed to the sill with push-buttons. The rear ones are still present - my car was only missing the front ones. And now I'm only needing a passenger floor mat - but these are way easyer to find. It's usually the driver's mat that's in poor condition. Spent a lot of money on something unimportant - but I'm totaly happy about it Apart from that - the 950.000km mark is approaching fast. The auxilliary heater had been working flawless ever since the last repair and keeps on doing so for 1-1.5h every day. The engine's had 3-4 cold starts since I got it working. And with current climate conditions - I do enjoy it a LOT ^this was tueday, today we had +10°C and sun. I think - I might possibly maybe even think about thinking about fixing the air conditioning... Cheers, Jan

I finally bought a bottle of Argon gas. Blöödy steep! 120€ for a owned bottle and 38€ for a 10l fill. At least I can just exchange it for a full bottle when I return it. And the hardware store is opened on saturdays till 20°°, so that might come in handy. 'Cause - you always run out of welding gas saturday afternoon, that's a law of nature Anyway, time to practice TIG welding. Very first try on some cheap square tube steel: And then I went directly to the aluminium (or aloominum as some like to call it ). At first I dipped the tungsten a few times, but after I had adjusted my body and the work piece and fiddled a bit with the settings - I got some presentable results pretty quick. Though I need to either hook up the foot pedal or find thicker filler rod. Currently I have only some twisted 1mm MIG wire. Does the job, though. I like aluminum welding a lot. But I still need LOTS of practice. Anyway, here's the first alunuminum welds: Thought I put this in here, since I bought this welder for the task ahead. Well, not only for that, but the intercooler sub-project was the kickstarter to fork out the money to buy an AC TIG machine. Cheers, Jan

That would be awesome! Coincidentally, I've just lost my only yellow crayon some days back... A crying shame!! I liberated this poor old yellow cryon from it's prison. It spent at least 40 years being trapped in a secret basement under an old wood work shop, completely covered in saw dust and spider webs. Untill we pried open the wooden floor to finally set it free! And now - it just disappeared... And this is not made up, it realy happened exactly as I told! Cheers, Jan

In today's news: A_M_G POWER!!!!!!!1111elven!!!111 Uuuuh yeah!!!! . . . . . . . . Oooooohhhh sh!!!!!t....! That's a blöödy HUGE sun of a beach that thing!! Doesn't even fit on top of the engine, neither does it alongside the block. Could only replace the air filter box with this, which would probably not be THE worst plans of all. But this will only serve as a pattern or donor for the core. I need to test it, but I bought it as leaking. So it cost me only 30€ shipped. And I think AMG has done everything right with this one. It's got, from what I can tell, a nice core, it's a cross-flow concept and it has a divided intake to equalise flow through the core (since the stream of charge air enters at a sharp-ish angle). So at least it can serve me as a pattern to maybe create something similar. I'm currently at a point where I'm thinking that nothing "of the shelf" will fit how I'd like it to fit. Resp. satisfy my requirements on this. Apart from that, nothing happened. Taxi needs some work soon, I need to finally get going and build a work bench in my little garage and then I can maybe comfortably work on this car in the dry. Cheers, Jan

Most ball joints are also just pressed in... I see no issue here And speaking of issues; if you should ever have issues with pressing a curved panel. Here's a neat solution from the professionals: Hahaha!

After 36 years, it still sticks. Mercedes sponsored the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow - and they made those stickers for that event. It's not strictly contemporary for a 124, but who cares. I just had to have a Mercedes sticker in russian language

Took the car to an rather unplaned 500+km trip to colletc some tyres - short story short: eBay messed up the coordinates, so my trip got 3x longer than I had planed. But - it took me to the Mosel area, which is quite a nice place. Just not this time of the year Though is't probably as the world imagines Joymoney; full of grapes, vine yrads, old castles and forrests and smal fields. Maybe I go back there in summer or autumn. Must be lovely if it's all green Cheers, Jan

I am indeed! PM received And I can report another milestone is this project's progressing; I have burned 7 liters of diesel just from moving the car around Second time it ran dry... And I bought this: A AC/DC TIG machine. 'Cause I need to weld some aluminium and I want to do it myself. Only problem: I've never TIG welded before So a lot or learning is ahead. Always wanted a TIG welder, so I would have bought one sooner or later anyway Also has a 50 amp plasma cutter built in. Cheers, Jan

Yesterday I received a letter from german customs. I was commanded to the next customs office or else I would be charged with a fine. A fine for storage. A daily fine. Because I had the cheek to buy something overseas and thus made them store it. How dare me! It took only 45 minutes and 3 people to handle my package (er this sounds wrong) - and a substancial amount of shredded rein forrest. And then I had to hand over some moneys to the goverment. Bundesadler stamp on papers - and I was free & allowed to leave. It took a while to explain to the officers what I had bought, and why I had bought this. "It's broken". Never easy to explain sh!t like this to officials who don't have the slightest of clue. They'r a friendly bunch of people, though, no issue. But all that paper work for essentially a piece of plastig with bits of foam hanging of it - it's rediculous! I could import enriched uranium, it would be the same amount of paper work ^that's the bit of plastic I had sent my way from the US of A. And here comes a bit of W124 history. The very first Turbodiesel cars were sold to the US market, Europeans had to wait a little longer. And this first batch of Turbodiesel cars had one striking difference. Which later defined the Turbodiesel cars. The slotted, vented fender. The very first US marketed Turbos didn't have it. Instead, they had this bit of plastic with foam hanging off it. Air was just drawn from under the wing guard. And that's that's what I bought - the very-early-Turbodiesel-under-fender-air-intake-thingy. I don't need it, I don't have any plans for it, but when I had the chance I just had to have it. Though maybe I feel like going all stealth some day - and then I have the right parts to do it. Cheers, Jan
