Model: VW Passat VR5 Estate (2.3 litre V5, 150BHP) Year: 1999 Mileage: 150k Tax: End of October MOT: March 2013 Location: Ilkeston, Derbyshire (J25/26 M1) Price: £750 Right, I've got this 1999 Passat VR5 estate (2.3 V5) engine, and although it does everything it should, I'm just not feeling it. Plus I've bought a Jeep Cherokee to replace it, so it's got to go. My car has done 150k miles, is MOTd until next March and taxed for a good few months yet. Although I'll have to send the tax disc back when I swap my insurance over to the Jeep at the end of the month. It's manual, decent tyres all round and has no rust that I can see. Interior is black leather/blue alcantara (leather bolsters, alcantara under yer bum). It has a towbar with electrics (although I've not used it, I assume it all works!). It has a scratch above one wheel arch and a couple of scratches on the filler cap, but nothing too serious. Everything seems to work as far as I can tell - remote c/l, electric windows etc. Since buying it, I've replaced the alternator and the crank sensor, it runs faultlessly now and seems to return around 27mpg round town on short runs. I'm pretty sure the seller mentioned that it had a balljoint or two replaced for the MOT, and had brand new front discs and pads for the test too. This last week I've been commuting to Sheffield and it's been returning over 30mpg, despite there being plenty of traffic at a few points along the way, I'm pretty sure it would do mid 30s MPG on a steady 70-80mph motorway run. Feel free to ask any questions, and I'm a sucker for something interesting in terms of swapsies, so try me! Nothing small though, I don't do small... Oh, in the below pics, the spare was on as that tyre had a puncture, it now has the alloy back on, complete with repaired tyre!

I'll give the whole story, it doesn't really add anything to the question, but as anyone who's read my garage build thread knows - I like to add all the details I've just bought a Jeep Cherokee from ebay, it had a cracked exhaust manifold (which I knew about, along with a few other faults), so that's all removed and welded up now. With the manifolds off, I noticed that a couple of core plugs were weeping slightly, so they've been removed ready to be replaced. Incidentally, one of my local motor factors is useless, he reckons that I'll need to go to the main dealer to get core plugs.... When I knocked the plugs out, a fairly grim brown liquid gushed out. This to me means there is corrosion in the system, and rather than just fill it up straight away with coolant, I'd much rather clean it first. So the question is, what's the best way to flush the system? I'm sure in the past I've seen various cooling system flushes in Halfrauds and the like, but do any of them work? Or is there a better way of doing it? Ta! And here's a couple of pics of the Jeep, on my drive and snuggled up in my garage

Anyone got a pair of all-terrain tyres in the above size in good condition at all? Cheaper the better please!

If you don't fancy pushing it, then for about £12 or £13, you can get a solid towing bar from Machine Mart. Just get someone with a car to drag it there....

Well, the V5 certainly isn't a top-end rev-happy engine, but it seems to have a fair wedge of torque between 2-4k.
Incidentally, I'm driving it between Derby and Sheffield this week, it's giving me over 30mpg in mixed conditions (30, 40, 50, 60, 70+ zones and plenty of traffic at Sheffield end!).
Cheers, Martin

I've got a 1999 VR5 Passat estate, it's a 2.3 V5 and is averaging just over 27mpg in normal (mostly sub 10 mile journeys) at the minute. I've no reason to doubt it would do over 30 mpg at 80mph motorway cruising. 150k miles but runs mint, MOT 'til next March and tax for just under 5 months. Just had new front discs and pads, alternator and crank sensor. £750 Let me know if you want any pics or more info! I've got a Jeep Cherokee in the garage awaiting the sale of this thing EDIT: Camchain on this engine too, so no cambelt changes to worry about 2nd EDIT: I'm in Derby, so not too close.... Still, I'm only a train ride away!! Hell, pay for the fuel and my return ticket and I'll deliver it myself lol

I'm after a set of tyres for my Jeep - either road biased tyres or all terrains - the MTs can wait for another time, it's mostly going to be used on the road for now...!
Ideally in 225/70/16, but slightly larger would be ok too!
Cheers, Martin

I'm after an LPG kit for my newly acquired '98 Jeep Cherokee.
Preferably a multipoint system with underfloor tanks, but I'm open to anything you may have, complete kits or just bits and bobs to help make it all come together!
Now sorted a front end kit out, I just need the underfloor tank setup if anyone knows of anything kicking about!?
Cheers, Martin

Just finished for today. Granted I only started at about 6:30 this evening, but I had other things to do during the day (well, ok I had to go and collect a car which took until early afternoon, then I lazed around watching bike racing....!). This is what took up my morning.... So the first job was to make 2 good kitchen cabinets out of the three that I had (cheers Drew!). After a little while of swapping legs, hinges and door bits around, I had two that I was happy with. Both double door units with drawers. Or tool drawers as I like to call them now. Once they were sorted, they were put into place under my bench and looked right at home. Then I put some shelves up over the aforementioned bench - it's a good job I'm tall, it's a bit of a stretch to the top one. Still, it's ideal for that stuff that I don't need too often! And my speakers and hi-fi that's no longer allowed in the house.... Bloomin wimmin. Not much more to say really, just general tidying and trying to find homes for things. There's a pile of stuff for the tip - when that's gone in the morning, I can put the new acquisition in. The next big jobs are to finish the roof (tiles have been ordered, just not arrived for me to collect them yet...). Finish glazing the windows and doors and then move onto the electrics. There's lots of other little bits that I can do too, but they are the main ones before I'll consider it finished(ish!).

This afternoon I had that rare combination of time (Mrs and her kids away for the weekend!), materials (plasterboard, wood, paint and a quick trip to Screwfix yielded some frame fixings and a T30 torx bit...) and enthusiasm! It's been my plan ever since I started building the garage to have a 'workshop end' down at the bottom where my main workbench is. I want this area to be generally more comfortable to work in and somewhere I can do smaller jobs (like working on engines or other 'not-full-vehicle' stuff). As such, I wanted to insulate the walls, fit an insulated ceiling and have some kind of heavy duty curtain/retractable wall. All this is so that it can be heated with a little fan heater and just take the chill off during the colder winter months... A mate gave me some roof insulation some time ago which has been waiting in the wings, and with some birthday money I had I bought some 4x2 timber and some 8x4 sheets of plasterboard. A couple of hours of moving things around and a bit of drilling and screwing, and I had this : A further couple of hours, and it's done around the bench (which was my main aim, I want to get that fixed into its final position so I can put some shelves up and treat it as a bench rather then a dumping ground. Needless to say, I straight away use it as a dumping ground ;D But that's only so I can paint the floor.... After a quick stop for some tea (Chicken and Sweetcorn soup followed by sweet and sour chicken balls and rice from the local Chinese!), I got on with painting the floor. The edges still need to be done, but they need brush painting due to the erm 'hilly' nature of the concrete at the edges. And I don't have a suitable brush right now...! Any excuse, eh? The only remaining bits to be painted now are underneath the Chevy, round the edges and underneath a couple of larger items that I'll move tomorrow and paint Off to pick my new (ebay bargain!) car up tomorrow, but hopefully there will be a further update either later on tomorrow or on Monday. Feels good to actually do something productive in there - bloody hard work doing it all on your own tho!! EDIT: I've got a bit of tidying to do now too.....!!

Just realised I hadn't put the 4th alloy back on the above photos - it was off having a puncture repaired. It's back on now!
Anyone got anything they fancy swapping this thing for? Try me!
