went to start it after ging to the shops and it coughed and now wont start. I'm not 100% but it does seem to be spinning over quicker on the starter now.
is it likelly to be proper knackered, or afforable rebuild knackered ?

The M20 engine is interference, and when it goes it usually results in bent valves if you don't get it stopped right away. If it's away, it's more cost-effective to buy a good used head than try to repair with new parts.

Before you buy anything, take the head off first to see if there is any damage i.e. piston/valve ahem, interfacing, just in case it isn't what you think it is.

Depending on the mileage etc it might not be worth the expense of rebuilding it properly - it's not too much of a job to see if the belt has broken or skipped on these anyway though which is good.

My 5 series m535 spun over like this when the ecu drowned in a pool of rusty water. Could be worth checking it's nothing like that before whipping the head off.

I think it's worth keeping, it's only done 89000, it should have a good 100k more left in it (hopefully)

I think i have a set of valves for a 325 head in my shed, just weighed in an 885 bare head and i am pretty sure i still have the valves if that is any help, may or may not be a full set, will have to check.

I think I have a spare somewhere too

If it happened at low speed you might have got away with just one or two bent valves.
If you look through the oil filler can you see the camshaft or the rockers? If so get someone to turn it over while you look to see if they are moving. If you can't see, take a sparkplug out, put your thumb lightly over the hole and turn it over - the pressure should alternately push and pull your thumb off and into the hole.

unless your leaving some vital information out, i cant see why you think the cam belt has snapped?

I was thinking that, surely at the least you'd hear the valves clattering the pistons as it span over, or it would lock solid.

I was just worried that it seemed to be spinning over quicker than normal as in no need to spin the cam, but it might have been the heat of the moment, I'll see in the morning
