Hi All Not been here for a while! Got a prob with my Ford1600 x flow engine in my Dutton Sierra. Starter turns VERY slow,in fact just manages to creak over!Have checked/changed all battery leads,new solenoid, By passed the solenoid. Put jump leads direct to starter ,no difference. Got a brand new starter,cleaned all starter to block mating surfaces etc etc . Mechanically the engine turns over ok ,tappetts arent tight and it will start easily on a tow!SOMETIMES after a tow start I can turn off and restart it no probs,other times it will just go back to creaking over slowly!I'm tearing my hair out ,and getting knowhere! Anyone got any ideas please? Regards Rod

All cleaned and checked.Thats why I connected direct to s/motor from a spare battery to check them.

try backing the timing off a couple of degs, or I could be the timing advance plate in the dissy has seized

I have removed all the plugs,therefore preventing it from firing ,just initially want it to turn over 'normal speed' initially.and it still wont turn over any quicker.

Bluffin .The car has been sat for a few months,but previous to that when in regular use it would turn over a bit slow in the mornings,and be ok the rest of the day. I presumed it was the battery not holding a charge.

Try this You need a 12V test lamp, one cable to a bare area of the engine and the other to the battery earthed terminal. Turn the starter. If the lamp glows, you have a faulty earth. If it doesn't and the earth is fine, connect one cable to the starter terminal and the other to the battery live terminal. The lamp should now shine brightly. Operate the starter; the lamp should go out completely. If it doesn't, the fault is in the feed.

Don't wan't to sound like an idiot, but have you tried another battery? Sounds exactly like just a dead battery... Have you tried with a battery charger with a "start help" function, or a battery you KNOW is in good knick, not just a spare one you've got lying around?
