Hi mate the link you posted doesn't work but as there is only one Bronze Toyota Cressida on E-bay and it's highest bidder is called blackbanger14 I think it is safe to assume you mean the car below. Yota CressidaOne of the previous lots bought my him, Possibly bangered???How much would a banger racer be prepared to pay for something like that?

That's not a huge amount for interesting RWD tin - one of my best friend's boyfriends races, and I know he's paid £300-ish for Mk2 Granadas before, and he wouldn't blink at £100 for something unusual - I know some people he knows have paid £500 upwards for things like P5s.
(Do a search for the highest bidder's username on Google and he's bought Ministock bits before, so...)

Err I might be totally out of order here but just some random thoughts - You can't save everything (if someone outbid "blackbanger" he'll only go an find another target) - I'd rather see the cars bought than stolen by Banger racers (if indeed this goes on) [off topic - ish](I know a lot of banger racers and all purchase/legaly gain ownership of cars for their leisure activities - however only takes one idiot to steal a car to banger race to label them as thieves and I think thats an unfair label)[/off topic - ish] - The market (ebay) determines the price it will fetch Save it by all means but I can't see the point

Postscript - Doesn't look much like the purchases of a banger racer to me - looks like the Austins are being restored - break shoes and hydraulic hoses? ??

Please bear in mind that a fella called John Hendry once bought a tax'ed and mot'ed rolls royce and bangerd it. He reported paid over £3000 for it just so he could be the first to banger one of them. People had done it before but had put them on granada running gear. He kept everything on his, including the grill. I actually witnessed him turn down £350 cash for it by someone at the race meet trying to save the 100% hand made grille but to no affect. It got smashed.

Thats a sickening story about the roller Bstardchild has a point, we cant save them all. Its a real shame we share our hobby with banger racers, but its the way it is. In an ideal world the banger boys would stick to the rear wheel drive stuff thats beyond restoration, and they would pass on the parts they don't need to enthusiasts, but it will never be that way. I don't particularly like banger racing, purely because I cringe at some of the cars that get destroyed. Would love to see that cressy won by an enthusiast.

Thats a sickening story about the roller That bloke had more money than sense - you'll always find people like that in every enviroment but one roller gone still leaves loads around....... I don't like banger racing either but several friends are into the F2 and F1 class stock car racing and it's always supported by the bangers. What I have seen is a lot of FWD drive cars now being used for bangers - on shale/mud it doesn't seem to matter if they are FWD or RWD Would love to see that cressy won by an enthusiast. Me too but what I didn't want to see was it bought to save and then lie rotting away forever cos whoever saved it did it on a whim

they would pass on the parts they don't need to enthusiasts, but it will never be that way. Quite often they do, though. I've seen Pinto and Cologne powered P5s and Yanks with the original engines being passed on or sold to enthusiasts, things like light clusters and glass normally get saved too. I've seen people put classics up for sale because they've been offered them for racing but think they're too nice to destroy. Sure, some people race things purely because they're rare, but it's not fair to tar everyone with the same brush. (bstardchild - I agree with all your points and to be honest, if that Cressida was a Mk2 Granada I wouldn't care, I just have a soft spot for obscure J cars and it looks like it can be easily be put back on the road...)

I actually really enjoy banger racing - its great fun. And yes, you witness the destruction of some retro tin but by and large these cars have had it. Banger boys aren't the scallies people make them out to be - I've bought rare trim and engines off them. After all, they can't race with the seats, carpets etc in place. They also know they can make a few bob selling the bits off to keep the better cars on the road. Put it another way... there is a chap who started off as a banger racer, destroying many many A60 Cambridges and the like. He then bought a minter and couldn't banger it. So he kept it. He's now the chairman of the Cambridge and Oxford Owners Club.... So don't be so quick to condemn. I do not condone the theft of a car to race it - or to do anything else with it. However, if a banger racer wants to pay top dollar for a car then fair play. I think before anyone further says anything about this chap, someone ought to contact him for right of reply. Its only fair, isn't it?

If a solid car gets wasted then thats bad or good ?
would you rather race a car thats rotten or solid ?
Please don't talk to me about the " no one wanted it " curse word, as thats an excuse thats been chuned out for about 30 years - its a get out clause. Ask about enough in the right places and someone will happily buy it.

I think the main differance between banger racers and us is that Banger racers don't have the issue of storing a car long term, or spending a lot of money to keep them road worthy. I would dearly love to have a huge barn filled with "Saves" but whats the point? if they are going to rust away and not be used then that must be nearly as bad as racing them, Like the guy with all the citroens? I've saved my Sapporo for now by spending loads more money on it than it will ever be worth again, not because I'll ever get it back, but because I love driving something unusual and if it's in excellant condition it'll be more reliable than mr and mrs finances new Golf ( fact ;D) Personaly I feel that the biggest hurdle we all face as lovers of old vehicles is lack of maintance by previous (or present) owners, as soon as you start putting off jobs on your own car or letting that little bit of rust develop into something bigger then it's the start of one way ticket to the ovel track or being stripped for bits. In the grand scheme of things, how many of our cars will be around in 200 years? you're only here once, so enjoy yourselves while you can and do something because you love it not because it makes financial sence don't get me wrong ,I would really love to see the Cressida saved and if it is raced then that would be a real shame but loads more have been scrapped over the years by owners not wanting to maintain the "old car" and getting something newer to keep up with the joneses

Bid Placed! At that money I can sort it out for the road again & turn a small profit, so may as well give it the chance of another year before death on the dirt oval!

Yow! Theres enough stuff there to supply all the drivers for a whole years racing!!
To be fair doesn’t look like there’s much there which could be easily salvaged.

I've also got a (non-definitive) list of every car raced 2002-2004 - about 26000 in total. More than 9000 of those were boggo Mk2 Granadas or Bluebirds, as opposed to 11 Cressidas...

Is it me or is it sad that if an enthusiast has a yard full of cars, the council comes around and slaps his/her wrists, yet someone who keeps a yard full of cars to destroy gets away with it?

Last year some time I'm sure there was a thread on here about or mentioned a late 70's Opel Rekord that was on the bay for sale with an obvious banger racer being the highest bidder. Id never seen many rekords but it looked brilliant and i felt so sad to see it lie such fate. So what did i do? I sent a one liner message to the seller saying something along the lines of please don't give it to the bangers!.... A few days later i have a fairly long email saying that becasue of me he'd taken it off the bay, was now keeping the car and is going to restore it. Result! I then explained to him about this forum (and i was merely a lurker then too ) and he then joined up explaining what had happened. I havent heard from him in ages though and not sure if he posted much which would make this a good time to ask the chap how the car is doing. I cant remember his user name though but i still have the old emails he sent me i think. So there you go, I felt really chuffed that i helped save a great retro form the tracks!
