cool pictures mate. i couldnt find any steel ringed gaskets despite my previous enthusiasm, but then i have zero involvment with mitubishi or parts supply (experience is with celica gt4 engine which suffered same as you, even gen toyota gaskets were better than the dimpled mesh ones) did find a mutlilayer stainless steel one though on google. perhaps some mitsu guys reading (if any) could comment
how does the omex control boost, is it map sensor + amal valve ?

I've managed to get hold of some 2 layer stainless steel gaskets, so hopefully they will last longer, I've also ordered some braided lines for the turbo oil and water lines. In the mean time I've tucked her away in the garage so I can spend some time sorting the Clio out, while I slowly put together the parts I need to sort the intercooler and pipework upgraded.

The culprit for the spate of gaskets looks to have been a banana shaped exhaust manifold, which has now been ground flat. I've put it all back together, using the new washers and copper nuts but I haven't completed any of the work on re-plumbing the turbo and preparing for a new intercooler and pipework as I simply don't have enough space in the garage. A pending house move should remedy this with a nice large double garage but that won't be for a couple of months if all goes well.
The tax is up at the end of October, so I've got to decide whether or not to declare this SORN or not as I've got a track day booked at Oulton Park at the end of November and trailering her there may be the best plan.....

Well PPC in the Park at Mallory Park was an opportunity to get the VR4 out on the track, pictures first then the tales of woe and damage! The day stated well with her starting first time and running up to temperature with no problems. The first session saw the near side front CV boot split but that wasn't too drastic as it looked to be just a pin hole. The second session was going really well until the steering suddenly got really heavy, coming back in I had no power steering and on closer investigation found that all of the bolts had come out of the pump and it had come loose, shredding the belt but fortunately the hydraulic hoses remained intact. Having removed the belt and zip tied the pump out of the way I went out in one of the late afternoon sessions but this was shortlived as she got a little twitchy, pulling in there was a lot of steam coming from under the bonnet, so I swiftly killed the engine. Investigation found this: One of the turbo water pipes had sheared and water had gone straight up and into the manifold. Fortunately I came in before anything got too hot! So work has now begun to replace all of the turbo connections and while I'm there I'll take a look at the manifold and hopefully get change to fit an uprated intercooler and hard pipes.

Ready to sell this to me yet ?? In all seriousness please give me first refusal if you do sell.
On another note,if your turbo isnt ball bearing, you can just get rid of the coolant pipes,as its a track car. My audi(which BTW is now finished and is awesome, have a look at my thread.) is running one of these chianese t34 oil cooled turbos and is holding great, even with daily driving and track use. Also if your flanges are flat,id just run with out a gasket at turbo/manifold.
Check if youve got a bolt/bracket to secure the downpipe to the block after the turbo,to take the weight if the exhaust and brace the turbo set up.

Thanks oldschoolcool, you've definitely got first refusal but are going to have to wait a while! The Audi looks and sounds awesome, brilliant work. Bit of an update now, I've stripped the turbo out, braided lines are now all sorted so its time to get the turbo back on. Manifold and turbo gaskets should hopefully all be replaced with twin layer steel ones as I've got new ones for all areas. Once the turbo is back in and the rad back too I can look at how to plumb the intercooler in, well at least once I find all of the bolts that hold the bumper on! Right, now for some pictures: Engine bay as it stands: Some destroyed gaskets: Sheared water and oil pipes:

I do remember changing those gaskets a few times on my evo. And also turbo/mani gaskets on my freinds turbo'd 735. I assembled the audi without gaskets, just a smear of exhaust paste. I get no blowing, which did surprise me. Now i remember I did find a turbo/mani gasket for the evo with the 'fire ring' It seems to me your oil/water pipes/gaskets failing is through vibration and/or exessive movement of the turbo assy. Is your downpipe stock or aftermarket? Most aftermarket ones don't have a means of secruring it to the block,so the entire weight of the exhaust assy pulls down on the turbo bolts. Ah Ha. Found an old photo. Hope this helps Keep going with the car,its soo cool.Itll only get better and better. They are in the same catagory as the Mcrae subaru lecacy. 1st japanese group A cars. Incidentally my old evo is still about. Its had a big fuel system put on and 2.2 bar boost to give 520 bhp !!! The chap is doing a wide arch kit and paint. His username is FUBES on evo13.net

Well I've finally recovered some VR4 shaped mojo! I've pulled the turbo and manifold off so I could take a fresh look at the oil and water connections. I'd been having clearance issues with the new fittings as well as getting the required flexibility to get round obstructions, etc. So the turbo is now off and on the bench: The engine bay now looks a little bare: And I have this collection of fittings to work with/replicate so I can get her running again: I hope to have some more updates as I get through sorting out the fittings.

Well wonders will never cease, she fired tonight with no oil or fuel leaks! Remaining jobs to do are to fit the radiator and test for leaks before taking her down from the ramps for the first time in over 2 years.
Mojo has returned in spades and all I can think about is when I'm going to fit the new intercooler and pipe work as well as the anti-roll bars and get a new exhaust on her. Pictures and videos to follow when she finally sees the daylight....

Well I spoke too soon about the lack of oil leak.... I cleaned up the oil and checked the level in the car, looks like it's lost a very small amount, so kept an eye on it, looks like it's coming out of the sump side of the sump return, better gasket and some sealant are on the cards. But this didn't stop me from letting the car see the daylight for the first time in over 2 years. She's since been tucked back away with some protection underneath to absorb any oil. I'm pleased to say the water system is without leaks and she is due an oil change so hopefully it can all be resolved at once.

So progress continues to be made, I'm still keeping an eye on the weep from the sump return but it looks to now be resolved after taking it off and adding a better gasket and some sealant. I also spent nearly an hour tonight getting the last bolt into the turbo elbow, so fiddly and constricted but it's in and certainly won't be coming out! As it was dark by the time I'd finished, I check all of the lights and was pleasantly surprised to find the, all to be working, except the front fogs which I'm not certain if I've ever seen them work.
The list is reducing, I need to work out how to add some more tension to the new power steering belt as I've got a wonderful, piercing belt squeal. But that's a job for another day...

So it’s been a long time but the VR4 has been MOT’d for the last couple of years now and will be again this month with a bit of luck. I’m hoping to get it out a little more and tax it for September. Just to prove it’s still here, now on a set of BBS wheels:
