It may well be me becoming old and miserable, but we seem to have a bit of a problem at the moment with threads which are utter w**k – whats your name, check out my fish tank, guess the weight of my car etc. Come on people, we can do better than that. Here is my effort at an interesting thread. Has anyone got any practical experience of importing cars from the land of Fosters and hats with corks on ‘em? Check these out off snag-sanga bay. cgi.ebay.com.au/NISSAN-DATSUN-260C-COUPE-FULLY-OPTIONED-RARE_W0QQitemZ4641802759This is only £200. cgi.ebay.com.au/DATSUN-260C-HARDTOP-COUPE-URGENT-SALE_W0QQitemZ4640735075Heres another one, £700 BUY IT NOW cgi.ebay.com.au/1970-Toyota-CROWN-Ute_W0QQitemZ4642180693Partially dismantled CROWN truck, £200. cgi.ebay.com.au/mazda-929-coupe-1974_W0QQitemZ4642321027£120!!! cgi.ebay.com.au/LEYLAND-MARINA-COUPE-74-RARE-AS_W0QQitemZ4642173349This is awesome!!! 1750 OHC marina koop, £150!!! Anyone ever tried it?

I've always wondered about this as well. Would be really interesting to know. You could always get it shipped to JApan and go on the roadtrip of a life time driving it back.

outside of the EU you pay the same regardless of nation of import.
I did write abotu a small novel on the subject a while ago, so search for it for chapter and verse.
But basically -
car+ shipping+ port fees+ (sometimes called container fees or dock fees) import duty (10% or car cost) + VAT (17.5% of car cost + shipping + duty) + Customs clearance paperwork fees (you can do this bit yourself if you're really tight)
£760 seems really cheap. Check that includes loading, dock fees, etc.
To ship a car form the USA is about £800 for the shipping, but by the time you've added all the other cack and declined "maritime insurance" three times you're looking at more like £1200.
then you need an MOT and you can go apply for a registration for it (£36 DVLA fee)

That Toyota Lexcen is just a VN Holden Commodore Executive, Buick based 3.8V6 engine is a goodun though. Nothing like a bit of badge engineering.

Good thread on both counts. more threads the merrier, but have a think if they are relavent, interesting, and broad enough to inspire interest/help, is the rule i try apply before i post. I have punted a few moderns but i expect this is occasionally ok, as well as motor bikes! Aussie motors must be overlooked, and i've ignored the idea just becase if it was further away it would be in space! Some great cars over there that i'd like to get my hands on, most with gutsy engines too. of course you could do it the other way and just move over there - it make loads of sense, specially economically! good place to build a museum.

remember that not all ausie cars are rust free though. As I understand it some parts have plenty of rain and bad weather too. I've seen some rusty ones in pics, and have heard of people being disappointed after importing rare Ute versions of stuff like Zephyrs or Wyverns and finding rot.

Nice work Mr.B Cedric coupes are tops! someone get them!!! Agreed, on both counts. You'd be joining a pretty exclusive club if you bought a Cedric coupe to the UK, there is one 330 model that used to come to the JAE shows of old, and I fear another was banger raced about 10 years ago. It may be cheaper to bring some obscure J-stuff across from Norway, though LHD there of course. What's with the grille on the Marina? makes it look like early Corolla.

Very good thread. I've bought small stuff off Aussie eBay - takes a fruggin' age to get here but I've never had any problems. I dare say shipping a car would take a fair few weeks, and I don't know how lucky I'd feel buying a motor off there blind... it'd be great to do, and if I had the money to throw at shipping a £200 Datsun over here and be able to take it in the b0llocks if it turned out to be a snotter I'd definitely do it!

It certainly is something to ponder, If you bought a £200 car would it be worth spending £800 having it shipped here? But I suppose that £800 "premium" would be worth it if the car was rust free and rare/unobtainable in this country.

Those Aussie Marinas are well different to the UK and NZ spec ones; that interior isn't even specced in the catalogues I've got here! Front suspension geometry is different, E series engines, Ford axles, uprated shock mounts front and rear and as for those grilles - curse word, I'd ship one here just to confuse the local 'experts'! (Mind you, my rear sungrille did come from Hobart in Tasmania!)

Yeah I think the North West of the country is wet. I certainly no NZ can be very wet. It's wet most places because most people live within 100kms of the coast. It's also quite humid in many cities for most of the year. Cars from coastal towns (ie right on the coast) tend to rust more from the salt-spray. Cars from deep inland can be close to rust-free. Oh, and there's not too many people in the North West of Australia. I think Indonesia may be closer to the far North West than Perth. Many cars will be from Sydney (coastal) or Melbourne (near enough) as they're the biggest population centres. Of course, it's drier here than in the UK, so our version of "old" is different to yours. It's not unusal for normal people to get around in post-85, pre-93 (to pick two random years) cars and think nothing of it and have a car that is in good condition. My (wife's) daily is a 94 Peugeot 405 Mi16, for example and that's a fairly new car here. That gold/bronze Corolla looks the goods. And those 260C Coupes are awesome. Here's a few from Toyotas from carsales.com.au. I'll leave it as an exercise for the motivated reader to do the AUD->UKP conversion. 1984 Toyota Cressida (I don't think anywhere other than Australia got this engine in this body): Cressida1974 CROWN1969 CROWN Wagon1965 Corona

I started 2 of these w**nk? threads, the job one and the name one. I'm sorry if they are causing problems with anyone as that certainly wasn't my intention. I've been on here long enough to regard you all as friends and it was just my way of getting to know you a bit better. I won't be doing it again though.
Sorry

Unless XE.com is lying the car below is only £400, yes 400 quid and the ad says it has no known rust and a rebuilt engine and gearbox. Even with shipping that's a bargain. I might start saving up for some none rotten J-Tin, and the best thing is they drive on the correct side of the road.
