ask Autofive - no Scim is safe ! ooooh you b1tch se5 / se5a manuals are quick, responsive, sporty feeling and you can throw them around without fear of loosing traction, steering response is good, but they can develop annoying rattles and windnoise se6/6a are a bit heavier, wider, longer and more sedate, they still have coilovers all round but (imo) loose traction more easily. autos are even slower se6b (with the 2.8 cologne) I havent driven, but withour the healthy torque of the essex I would expect them to be slower the last Triumph 2000 I drove was a bit wallow-y, and vague in its handling - but that may have just been a tired suspension

Cheers, the owner of the SE5 said the earlier ones are better, more enjoyable to drive. The main things he said that were not so good was the plasticy feel of the doors/interior (to be expected) starting from cold and misting up. I really like the relative practicality and British muscle car style.

plasticy feel is something you get used to, cold start isnt a problem, but screen misting is a constant problem as the interior heater and blower are rubbish.
the se5 interior has a 1960s-vinyl-feel about it, whereas the se5a (1972 onwards) has more plastic and rattles.
beware of se5a body plonked onto a se5 chassis to obtain free-tax status

How similar is the SE5 chassis to the SE4? I know that the 4 is pretty much a rebodied Sabre Six, and those can be made to handle very nicely.

main chassis is the same (from memory) just the outriggers differently arranged
small differences in suspension - slightly bigger front arms, but not sure about the rear axle arrangement on the se4
