Was looking for a bit of a project to use as a daily while doing a rolling restoration, when a look in the for sale section here came up with this.. A pretty crusty Cortina for £350. Paint had been partially stripped and then abandoned, possibly due to the amount of holes and filler appearing. He did make a start though... But as I doubt under it is weld, it'll all have to come back out. As a bonus, it has rear arches ;D A 1600 X-Flow.. And a half tidy interior with GT dash and Wooler quick shift remote. Bit of fresh petrol and some jump leads and it burst instantly in to life. Shame it didn't go instantly in to gear! A quick bleed saw pressure enough to drive under it's own steam but I think the slave is leaking. Going to peruse it for MOT tomorrow and take it from there. Oh, and the exhaust... will be the first thing in the bin...

Now that is a pretty epic piece of automotive purchasing right there I'm liking the looking of it, and the engine and bits must be worth the purchase price alone So apart from binning that lovely exhaust what else have you got planned?

Colour change which lets face it, unless I stick a VW badge on it I aint gonna get away without painting it Colour choice is up in the air but want something bright. Rest of it I like though, will remain bumperless but other than that and the exhaust, I'm happy. Would like some different rims though, chrome smoothies would be good but can't find any. Lotus steels I'd need to whore my body for, so it's going to be whatever I find cheap that takes my fancy. Can't have the rims costing more than the car, can I? ;D

Really cool, too bad the last owner didn't even take the time to go over it once with a spray can.
I think the wheels are ace, great interior too.

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

I do love a mk1 Cortina, my favourite shape of all. I'd refurb the current rims if money is tight. IMO, body colour just HAS to be a period one and I'd stay away from a Lotus type stripe too. Good luck with it mate.

Is it a proper GT? I'd be surprised if it wasn't. Brilliant buy for the price, if I'd have had the space.....

I'd refurb the current rims if money is tight. It's not the money thats tight, it's me I just love building stuff on a budget, hate buying new if you can repair or get secondhand. Also want to keep it as period as possible. Thanks for the kind comments, guys. ;D

Hey thats a bargain. Theres an estate near me sitting in the drive but the guy reckons its worth a gazillion pounds so it just sits there instead of being sold to someone who could look after it.

Shame, but that happens across the country all the time. Would be nice if these "I'll restore it one day" cars were either restored or passed on before it's too late.

what ever colour you paint it needs to match or complement the interior really. So anything bright will look silly imo.

Dash and door tops are going body colour, carpet is that stuff used for doing campervan walls so that can go and the seats need some work so I may as well change the colour of them too

Well as it's kinda dry out (it's all being done outside on the drive), I thought it time to have a peek underneath. I must admit I've been dreading this bit, but was greeted with a totally intact floorpan. It's had some small bit of welding done at the base of the inner wings, but seems to a decent standard. The whole underbody has been well protected and it seems to have paid off. Well done previous owners! Well done also to the owner who took the time to polybush everything apart from the inner tca's. But black mark to whoever welded on the front anti roll bar mounts! I'll cross that bridge at a later date. Rot seems to be confined to the n/s sill, which has been patched previously but also filled with lots of filler. While I was under there I decided to look at an area that was concerning me, the o/s wing around the headlamp. As you can see in the above pic, there is a lot of filler there. Well, looking underneath expecting to find mesh and P40, I can see no reason for it! It looks all solid under there and of correct shape, so I'm sort of puzzled why it looks so hideous from the outside. While it's on stands, I had a quick check over the MOT items and can't find any play anywhere and it all looks good. May be a rolling resto after all. Next thing is to get the wheels off, rubbed down and painted ready for a set of 185/70's to be fitted to replace the cracked and flat tyres it's on, so I can keep it rolling around.
