I'm more in the same division as Seth - I've stuck to Brit cars mainly.... obviously a load of Triumphs being the bulk of my ownership. I do have 3 J-tin, 1-Deutsche bahnstormer at the mo' to complement..... and biggest outlay has been the Ford TT. I have a pssion for rusty brit tin I suppose.
Old man has been Ford his whole life - Cortinas mainly. Recently took company car option and stuck Ford without test drives of anything - hates the Focus TDI with a passion and is thoroughly cheesed off with all current Ford products so much he's thinking of a Volvo after 39yrs driving....

I think some people are getting the point – you don't necessarily set out to be “brand loyal” but you wake up one morning and think “blimey half the cars I have owned over the last 25 years have been from the same company. How did that happen?”
To say you had “no choice” in your daily beaters is probably not true. “I only bought Fords as daily snotters because I had to”. Really? No other brands of car available at all? I'm not saying you a LIAR and your PANTS ARE ON FIRE! but there is some subconscious or involuntary thing going on there. You need a cheap banger so you buy a Ford. Its a Ford preference. When buying cheapy old bangers I tend to end up with some Japanese thing, or at least looking at them and ignoring the Fords, Vauxhalls, VW etc.
Mark – I don't follow your maths. If you own 28% Fiat and 11% Ford that surely makes you Fiat fan not a Ford one?
I also don't think its a thing about stock vs modified. A lot of the time there are in house styling cues or whatever so even if you throw away all of the running gear etc. completely you get people who go with the same brands over and over. Look at the hot rod scene. Probably no Ford parts at all on many of the “Ford” hot rods out there, but still people build Ford, Ford, Ford...
I think its a comfort level thing. “I'll stick with brand-x because I don't need to learn how another make does it” “I'm happy in my scene” “I know good suppliers for this brand” “I have a pile of spare parts and accessories for this make” “People know me for this make/model and keep selling me their cast offs cheap” (that’s how I ended up with 15 or so Vauxhall Victors, literally they started to find me...)
If anything I'd have said I was stuck in a specific era, I find it harder to look outside my comfort zone of years than brands. I think that’s one for another day.

Alistair, you are bang on about the suppliers. Half the reason i stick to German stuff for my daily beaters is the ready availability of spares from GSF and Eurocarparts. That same reason does highlight that i don't stick with them for their fabled "reliability". Its just making life easy when its a daily driver. I own a minimum of 3 cars though, when its not my daily i can put a bit more thought into being adventurous with brands etc...

AK - If anything I'm Mercedes Benz, but the post title was ford or chevy, I guess the ownership of one ford makes me a ford man over a chevy man. It would appear that the daily stilo combined with the panda and couple of 126's does however make me a fiat man.

Hmmm, interesting. My micra's the first car in the household that's not been a ford. I tend to like nissans but when i do change for my next car i'd like an E34 beemer. not particularly brand loyal.

I am probably the only Essex guy who can't stand Fords, massively overrated, overpriced, rusty rubbish. BMC/BL/Austin/Austin-Rover all the way for me! Oh the irony I thought that too, but bit my tongue due to owning BMC myself in the past.

the post title was ford or chevy. because I was brought up with that being the big grudge rivalry. Ford vs Chevy (or in the UK Ford vs Vauxhall I guess) not that it was a litteral question...

My earliest motoring memories were Nissan and I've always been deawn to them, especially over Mazda and Toyota. I really have disdain for German motors, for one reason or another - not necessarily logical.
Answering the o/p, GM. I'd like an 80s f-body.

I grew up in Australia, you pick a tribe there early on. Mine was Holden. Every Holden I've ever owned was a total shitter and I still love them. Even the new ones. Now that I live in England my tastes are all over the place. I race a Toyota. I daily drive a Fiat. I take the girly's MX5 out for late night, mid winter, roof down silliness and I'm currently lusting after a Lotus. But even with this diverse driveway full of cars I still smile and make excited noises when a Monaro rolls past.

i'll ad that i like most stuff 50's to early 80's , but also that i tend to find some modern ie post this date complicated for the sake of it at times. like alot on here we where prob influenced by those around us be it family ,friends or just the sight or sound of certain vehicles that made us want to know more about them & dream/lust after the unobtainable at the time. i remember most of the stuff i like being dailys be they new or recently used & while not owning them got to reg use & work on most , i have to say that most where good cars for there time & ended up being a ford fan, but i loathe the marina/ital these things where horrible to work on ,poorly designed & useing 30 year old mechanicals that we'ren't up to the job & epitomised why we no longer have a car industry. other bl stuff was mocked allegro being an example but atleast this was a move forward , to try & compete with the imports, but once they cured the rust prob it made them much better options than any uk produced stuff, but the marina struggled to cope against its home grown (even in house) rivals let alone imports.

14% Mopar 28% GM 56% VAG
Guess that makes me a Chevy man, actually i have a US license plate in my garage that says "I'd rather push a Chevy than drive a Ford"
Also 75% of my VAG ownership has been SEAT, quite unintentionally I think?

After about 30 cars I've still had more Fords than any other make (2 Escorts, 2 Capris, 2 Cortinas, 3 Orions, 4 Sierras and a Mundano). Vauxhalls? I've had a few. But then again, too few to mention. Nothing they have made in the last 20 years or so has ever really rung my bell.
More recently, my wife has developed a thing for Volvos and since buying my Alfa, I can't really imagine not having one.

I am loyal to my wallet, which is usually fairly empty.
That said, like for like I would go Ford over GM almost every time. The ergonomics and dynamics just work for me.

Seem to be Ford over here too ;D
Thing is I need a van in my life and as we all know, van=Transit.
Currently running 2 Fords and 1 vag product and have only had 1 from the GM stable which was my Chevette I owned before getting a license. I loved that Chevette and would have another though the lack of Vauxhall since has been down to a rattley Astra diesel of my fathers when I think back.
Funny how one bad experience can sully your view.
