Before i handed over the cash, i couldn't help wondering what 90's J treasure i could buy. This does seem to be the way forward, but not for me, theres the can of electronic worms and obscure bits to worry about. I'm sure i'll learn more on this than i would a modern J car. The guy I bought mine has a 2.5 modded Soarer and didn't cost too much more than than i paid for the Sierra, and he seems pretty converted and in awe of the power, economy*, handling, oh and creature comforts/comfort! *for a performance car. Moving on from my ramblings in the corner of alistairk's ventora thread. Before i forked out for the Sierra, (which IMO is perfectly retro and nice n simple) I got wondering what a bit more money would buy out of late 80's early-mid 90's J stuff. I didn't know too much about this sort of thing and apart from the performance, i didn't fancy any apart from perhaps a R32 Skyline. The V8 Sierra was in the same line of stuff i wanted and a damn sight cheaper than that stripped and basic escort i'd planned to build, and lot less dopey than the custom Capri. Once it had been cranked up, and a few photoshops, it had to be done really! What could I have saved for though? Performer, comfort, handler, bit bland? cgi.ebay.co.uk/1991-Lexus-Soarer-V8-Ltd-toyota-not-LS400-Mercedes_W0QQitemZ4638164732old rex? cgi.ebay.co.uk/1987-MAZDA-RX7-RED_W0QQitemZ4638563685Later skyline? cgi.ebay.co.uk/NISSAN-SKYLINE-GTS-TYPE-M-TURBO-5-SPEED-MAN_W0QQitemZ4638309518A good r32? out of budget probably and possibly ragged!? cgi.ebay.co.uk/NISSAN-SKYLINE-R32-GTR-GT-R-TWIN-TURBO_W0QQitemZ4639517829In a position like this what would you do? Gamble? If so with what nearly retro Japster, or other if nessesary?

I like the R32 Skyline a lot.
I only really like the Soarer as a potential donor car.
I do very much like the Mazda Cosmo though. Wish I could have bought that one that went for £1500 on eBay a few weeks ago.

Yeah i'd never seen one of them Cosmo's before.
The Soarer is a well sorted car all round, like a Supra in sheeps clothing. Seems to suffer in the looks dept though. However my mates is looking well nice with non standard wheels and some discreet mods. Gotta admit I'm tempted.

How much did you spend? Less than £1500? I agree with the Starion but the 200sx S13 is reliable and fast: but unfortunately it is also extremely unfashionable at the moment. They're both rear wheel drive though. So's the excellent 300ZX. The Soarer is cheap and unusual but looks like a barge to me. Charlie

These 300zx's have recently started appealing to me but i think wheel choice on them is important. I think the one in this photo looks cool but some just look naff.

I think that’s cos these 300ZX’s have been a staple favourite of the ‘bank-loan barry brigade’, lots of shonky ones have been bought up by folk who do a simple ‘BHP/quid spent’ calculation and then buy (on the drip) whichever gives the highest value. They normally follow up with a load of half-*rsed low-cost ‘performance enhancing’ barry mods and drive round until their ignorance of their vehicle causes it to suffer an expensive breakdown, after which it is scrapped/ebayd/burned out and claimed for. The Mitsubishi 3000GTO falls into this category too. Luckily I think they are coming to the end of this period, as Imprezas and the like get more affordable.

Some of the cheaper Skylines on that page would more than suit my needs. That first R32 single-turbo at £1500 would be relatively simple and still pretty quick, and I'd love an R32 saloon some day. Despite being a non-turbo 2.0, driving Ratdat's R33 saloon was still fairly impressive. Soarers are nice-looking too IMO, someone recently told me about one round here for £1200-ish in the Free Ads.

Charlie Isn't that a favourable point though? Otherwise we'd all be driving Mondeos.... the quirkier the car, assuming it has right-wheel drive and you can get parts, the better it is surely? Seems to be the way on r-r! Plus the fact unfashionable = cheap. if nobody wants them, they have to give them away at daft prices.

Missed a reasonable 200SX for £350 recently. Needed brake calipers apparently, but little else. Cheap-late model RWD fun! I dismissed it at the time, then thought about it, then it was sold and I kicked myself a little...

Are these UK-delivered or grey market imported?
The RX-7 will have some of the electrics not working from the clock to the logicon. They run a wiring loom straight out of the top-of-the-line 929/Luce so there's about 5 times too much wiring in them as well. Are they many rotary specialists in the UK? A working series 4/5 RX-7 is a very good thing. A shagged one is pus.
