I hate these type of threads but you people are so good at answering them i thought i would ask.
Ive just got off the phone to my insurance company(admiral) as i was getting a quote for a new car (eunos Roadster). After i received the quote i was asking about temp insurance as my policy runs out on 27/01/2011 and i turn 21 on 04/02/2011 and the quotes ive been getting if i was 21 are about £400 a year cheaper than if i was 20. after finding out they don't do temp insurance i mentioned i would probably get the bus for a week then take out the insurance on the 4th.
Then she said that from january all cars that are taxed and moted will have to have insurance even if they are parked on private land. you will need to sorn it if you don't want to insure it for a week. This is now worrying me as my mondeo will probably not get sold till mid jan and wont be insured from next week and my mother has her taxed and moted but not insured Ibiza sitting on the drive.
Anyone else heard about this and can shed some more light?

massive issues,
i have a trade policy, so if you struggling ill happily pop them both on my policy, bare in mind though that my policy is only 3rd party... and wont cover you to drive either....
pm me if you need a hand...
but there may be some one closer that can help you out...

Anyone got any idea what the lea-way is for uninsuring a car?
I,e if i was to sell my car, Its going to take up to 6 weeks for a dvla changeover to the new owner, I'm not going to keep it insured in my name while someone else drives it around, That in itself is an offence. (iirc)
So I'm guessing there will be a gap in regards to that? Which surely defys the point? There will be cars going against this legislation just by selling ?

Just take out a policy and then cancel it on your birthday. You have a 14 day cooling off period, you might lose the admin fee but it will be cheaper than £400! Not ideal but if the legislation is stupid to begin with. I've a mate who has cancelled within the cooling off period no problen just recently.

Ive had a few cars off road that still had tax and mot but at that poin they were not required for a few weeks. but i need to sorn, send the tax back and go through all that curse word to keep a car off road. and you know your gonna lose money left right and centre with sending tax back. |

If a car is mot'd and taxed that implies it's in use. No to me that implies its ready to be used. If its not insured its not in use. In january my home will have 3 cars taxed, Moted and insured being used daily but we will also have 2 cars taxed and moted but not insured that are both for sale. I don't want to send the tax back as it is worth more with the couple of months tax but also i don't want to insure it as I'm 20 and 2 insurances is mega bucks plus its only up for sale for £300 so i don't see the point. I'm guna lose out at every turn. |

well i guess i best get my capper off the road while its still insured to fit the SX engine in then, rather than wait for the policy to expire, how annoying!

Just because its Taxed and MOT'd it does not automatically assume your still driving it around. So basically I need to reinsure my GT in Jan even though it wont be used till at least April cus March because its still taxed.

You could always sorn the car and cancel the policy before you sell it. which in itself is crazy, we all know a tax'd car is easier to sell.. how does the new buyer then purchase it, they would have to get the logbook (well green part upon purchase) but then wait for the postal service to send out an insurance certificate for the insurance and then visit the post office to tax it before driving away.. Means that last minute ebay, pick up next day purchase will be a thing of the past I can see some logic tho, if i had a car for sale, I wouldnt want to risk it getting stolen and having no cover on it I've always kept a car insured til the following day after its left my posession |

So it's turning into a bad rendition of what we do here, then?
If you don't plan on using the vehicle for an extended period of time, you can cancel the insurance on it but you also have to turn in the state-issued tag that's screwed to the back. If you're selling it, you have to turn the tag in and the new owner gets a new one anyway.
You do get the remainder of the price of the tag back. In this case it's not much because a standard car tag costs $14 here, for the year.
Putting it back on the road is okay too. Get your insurance sorted, get the proof (either wait for it in the mail or a certified copy faxed from your insurers if you need it there and then), bring proof you have title to the vehicle and pick up a tag, screw it to the back and drive away. If the safety sticker in the front window has expired, drive to the testing station, have the car re-certified and job done. In about two hours from start to finish, total outlay the cost of the insurance, $14 for the tag and $10 for the inspection (MoT equiv.) if required.
Took a while to get used to but it makes a heck of a lot more sense than what they propose there...

we need an insurer to step up with a "hibernating" policy option, the vehicle will be parked up, it will not be sorned, it may still be taxed, it may require use for test drive/taking to a garage/taking for a test drive prior to sale. one phone call and you "wake up" the vehicle.
If done online (just renewed daily with swiftcover and i like the alll online aspect of it) with ticking of boxes, printing cover notes etc, the admin for changing the status of the vehhicles risk could be reduced, some forward thinking insurer could get ahead briefly.
i realise this is pie in the sky, but we can all dream. otherwise, lots more sorning, and more use of day insure type sites for test drives etc
